Memory.
Since childhood, he showed a keen interest in
Knowing God.
Was very attentive whenever his mother narrated
Bible stories. He learned by heart the Catholic Catechism and Latin prayers and would teach his younger brothers and sisters.
When he finished his elementary education, he
told his mother his desire to be a priest.
His father wanted him to be a lawyer but could
not do anything but to agree. “If God wants my son for Himself, let His name be praised. We will do everything possible for our son.” He started his studies to become a priest outside the seminary for 3 reasons:
1. He could not afford the seminary expenses
2. poor health
3. good private schools were staffed by priests
After he received his clerical habit in 1836, he was forced to stop because of a strange sickness. During this period, he tried to deepen his knowledge in moral theology which helped him a lot as a priest. Cardinal Mastai Ferretti has so much trust and confidence in him that soon after his ordination, he appointed him as the assistant rector of the seminary of Imola. He, who was never a student of a seminary, was given the first mission as a priest inside the seminary. A delicate and tough task yet he carried it with admirable zeal. His diligence and wisdom won the heart of these Theologians who were almost near ordination. He maintained discipline in the seminary by being a good model and assistant rector from 1843 to 1848. It was during this period that Don Carlo came to know and love the great saint of meekness and gentleness: St. Francis de Sales. It was the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales that characterized his ministry as a parish priest, as a gentle director and as a founder of the Daughter of St. Francis de Sales. Don Carlo Cavina was an accomplished organizer and promoter of associations: he started the first youth group of the Catholic Action in the Diocese organized the conferences of St. Vincent de Paul and the Daughters of Mary in 1850. founded the charitable work of the missions in Lugo was an active promoter of the missions introduced in his parish the Apostleship of Prayer from which sprang the charism of the Daughters of St. Francis de Sales congregation. he organized for mothers and Christian women the association “Patronage of our Lady of the Sacred Heart.” he was greatly devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He built an altar for the Immaculate Conception at collegiate. he opened a school of the Holy Trinity for boys and girls and working adults became a founder of the religious congregation, the Daughters of St. Francis de Sales. His years of service were marked by difficulties brought by many social problems, insults, threats and persecutions but he sacrificed everything with love and joy for Christ. He offered his entire life to serve the people and to fulfill his duty as a pastor of souls until his death on September 15, 1880 at the age of sixty. He was an exemplar parish priest. His remains rest in the chapel of the mother house of the Daughters of Saint Francis de Sales in Lugo, Ravenna Italy. Dio Sia Benedetto!
