BODY MOVEMENTS
CLASS :- VI
SUBJECT :- SCIENCE
1) Joints :-
The places where two parts of our body are joined
together with the help of bones are called joints.
There are four main types of joints. They are :-
i) Ball and socket joint
ii) Pivotal joint
iii) Hinge joint
iv) Fixed joint
i) Ball and socket joint :-
Ball and socket joint is a joint which allows movement in
all directions.
In this joint the rounded end of one bone fits into the
cavity of the other bone.
Eg ; Shoulder joint, hip joint etc.
Skull
Backbone
Shoulder bones
Rib cage
Pelvic bones
Bones of hands and legs
3) Cartilage :-
Cartilage are parts of the skeleton which are not as hard
as bones and which can bend. It joins the bones together
and helps in movement.
4) Functions of bones and cartilage :-
i) Bones and cartilage form
the skeleton of the body.
ii) They give frame and shape
to the body.
iii) They help in movements of
the body.
iv) They protect the internal
organs of the body.
5) Movement of bones :-
Bones move with the help of muscles. The muscles work
in pairs. When one muscle contracts , the other muscle
relaxes. Bones move by the contraction and relaxation of
the muscles.
6a) Movement of earthworm :-
The earthworm moves by the extension and contraction
of its body muscles. The tiny bristles under the body helps
in gripping the ground.
b) Movement of snail :-
A snail moves by the contraction and relaxation of its
muscular foot.
c) Movement of cockroach :-
A cockroach has three pairs of legs for walking and two
pairs of wings for flying. The muscles of the legs and
breast helps the cockroach for walking and flying.
d) Movement of birds :-
Birds have hind limbs for walking and perching. The fore
limbs are modified as wings for flying. The muscles of the
hind limbs and breast helps the birds for walking and flying.
Birds have hollow bones and wings with feathers for flying.
e) Movement of fish :-
Fishes swim in water with the help of its body muscles and fins.
Fishes have streamlined body. Their head and tail are smaller than the
middle part of the body.
When fishes swim, the head and tail forms curves in opposite
directions. Then suddenly the head and tail forms curves in opposite
direction and pushes the body forward. The fins help in movement and
to balance the body.
f) Movement of snake :-
Snakes move with the help of their muscles and
backbone. The body of snake curves into many loops.
Then the muscles give a forward push and the snake
moves forward.
