INTRODUCTION TO ATOMS

The first definite theory about the structure of matter

was proposed by John Dalton in 1890.
“All matter is composed of extremely small,
indivisible particles called atoms”.
The word atom comes from an ancient Greek word
‘atomos’ meaning ‘indivisible.
Santhosh
HE IS NEILS BOHR
ABOUT NEILS BOHR.
 Niels Henrik David Bohr was a Danish physicist who made foundational contributions to
understanding atomic structure and quantum theory, for which he received the Nobel Prize
in Physics in 1922. Bohr was also a philosopher and a promoter of scientific research.
 Born: 7 October 1885, Copenhagen, Denmark
 Died: 18 November 1962, Carlsberg Byen Ejendomme P/S, Copenhagen, Denmark
 Full name: Niels Henrik David Bohr
 Awards: Nobel Prize in Physics(1922), Gold Medal of the Royal Danish Academy of
Science and Letter(1906), Copley Medal(1938), Matteucci Medal(1923), Max Planck
Medal(1930), Hughes Medal(1921), Fraklin Medal(1926), Sconning Price(1961), Atoms for
Peace Award(1957).
 Education: Copenhagen University (1911), Gammelholm Latin School(1903),

Trinity College.

 Lifren Rose
DISCOVERY OF MODERN MODEL OF ATOM.

In 1913, Neils Bohr, a student of Rutherford 's, developed

a new model of the atom. He proposed that electrons are
arranged in concentric circular orbits around the nucleus.
This model is patterned on the solar system and is known
as the planetary model.

 Premiga Varathan
THE MAIN FEATURES OF NEILS BOHR’S
MODEL OF ATOM.
An atom consists of three subatomic particles – Electrons, Protons,
Nuetrons.
An atom consists of a small positively charged nucleus at centre
which contains protons and nuetrons called as Nucleons.
Most of the mass of an atom lies in its nucleus as the surrounding
electrons have negligible mass.
An atom is electrically neutral since the number of protons is equal
to the number of electrons present in it.
 Shri Ganesh
THE FEATURES OF NEILS BOHR’S MODEL OF
ATOM
The nucleus of an atom is surrounded by electrons. The Electrons in an
atom revolve around the nucleus in certain definite paths or orbits called
shells .
The shells are the imaginary paths.
These shells are also called energy levels since each shell has an energy
associated with it. The shell nearest to the nucleus has energy of E 1,
The next orbit E 2, and so on. The shell nearest to the nucleus has the
lowest amount of energy, while the shell farthest from the nucleus has
the maximum amount of energy.
 Shree Sahishnu
THE FEATURES OF NEILS BOHR’S MODEL OF
ATOM
As long as an electron remains in a particular orbit, it does
not lose or gain energy. The energy is emitted or absorbed
only when an electron jumps from one energy level to
another. Energy is absorbed when an electron jumps from
a lower orbit to a higher orbit and energy is emitted when
an electron falls from a higher orbit to a lower orbit.
