Identifying Rate
L KING BACK

 What is ratio?
Problem Opener

Joshua scored 168 points in 7 basketball

games. Express in lowest terms, the average
rate of the number of points that Joshua
scored in every game.
Rate =

= 24 points per game

Sheena and Nikka joined the ladies’
basketball tryout. Sheena scored 34 points
in her two games while Nikka scored 51 in
her three games. Whose average point per
game is higher?

Let’s answer the following questions:

a) Sheena’s Average Point in Lowest Term.
b) Nikka’s Average Point in Lowest Term.
c) Compare Sheena’s Average Point to Nikka’s
Average Point.
LET’S DO THIS!

Find the rate:

a) If Luisa can type 440 words in 8 minutes, what
is her rate of typing?

b) If 20 oranges cost Php100, at what rate are the
oranges sold?
What have you learned?

What is rate?
ASSESSMENT

Find the unit rate.

a) 180 kilometers in 3 hours
b) 74 stools in 2 weeks
c) 250 words in 5 minutes
d) Php36 for 9 ballpens
e) Php220 for of chicken.

 What is ratio?
 What are the different ways in writing a
ratio?

Write a ratio for each of the following:

A. 4 wins to 2 losses
B. 6 weeks to 12 days
C. 24 girls to 18 boys
Problem Opener

In a basketball game, Ken made 5

shots in 7 tries. While Carlo made
10 shots in 14 tries
a.) Write the ratio of shots and tries made by Ken.

b) Write the ratio of shots and tries made by Carlo.

c) Are these two ratios equivalent ratios?

When two ratios are equal they form a proportion.
Proportion is a statement of equality between two ratios.
In the proportion, the cross products of equal ratios are equal.

Thus, the product of the means is equal

to the product of the extremes.
In a proportion, the product of
the extremes equals the product
of the means.
1. 2 : 3 = 8: 12 2. 2 = 8
3 12
2 x 12= 3 x 8 2 x 12 = 3 x 8
24 = 24 24 = 24
LET’S DO THIS!

Tell whether the following given ratios are proportions.

Write P if they are and NP if not.

____ a. 5:4 and 10:8

____ b. 3:11 and 4:12
____ c. 18:27 and 6:9
____ d. 3:21 and 6:40
____ e. 9:12 and 7:31
What have you learned?

What is proportion?

How to determine if the ratios

form a proportion?
ASSESSMENT

Solve and determine whether each is a proportion or not . Write

YES or NO on your notebook.
1) = ______
2) = ______
3) = ______

What have you seen in the

picture?
Do you like to eat buko or
drink buko juice?
Do you know someone who
is selling buko juice?
Problem Opener

During weekends, Zeny helps her mother sell

buko juice. For every buko, Zeny adds 4 litres
of water. How many litres of water does she
need for 3 bukos so that the taste will be the
same.

? 3:?
Analyze the problem:

a) What is asked?
b) What are the given facts?
c) What strategies may be used to
answer the problem?
Steps in Finding the Missing
Term in a Proportion

1. Get the product of the means or the

extremes, whichever is completely given.

2. Divide the product by the remaining term.

Checked:
2:4=3:x
2.4=3.6

12 = 12
12 The product of the means is
equal to the product of the
extremes.
LET’S DO THIS!

Tell whether the following given ratios are proportions.

Write P if they are and NP if not.

____ a. 6:9 = 8:x

____ b. m:7 = 6:21
____ c. Emily earned P200.00 in 4 hours at her job
today. She wants to know about her hourly earnings at
the same hourly rate. How much will Emily earn in 8
hours?
LET’S DO THIS!

Tell whether the following given ratios are proportions.

Write P if they are and NP if not.

____ d. Sam can eat 2 burgers in 20 minutes. He is now

wondering how many minutes it would take him to eat
16 burgers if he could keep the same pace.
What have you learned?

How do we find the missing

term in a proportion?
ASSIGNMENT

Find the missing term to make the proportion true.

a) 9:N = 27:15
b) N:8 = 12:32
c) 5:3 = 25:N
d) 14:21 = 2:a
e) A motorist traveled 240 km in 3 hours. At the same rate, how
long will it take to travel 400 km?

Objectives

Solving problems involving direct

proportion
(M6NS-IIb-134)
L KING BACK
Find the missing term:

1) 3:x = 6:10
2) 3:4 = 27:x
3) x:9 = 12:18
Problem Opener

Roy and Al sell newspapers on weekends to

earn extra money. For every 3 newspapers that
Roy sells, Al sells 5. If Roy sold 15 newspapers,
how many did Al sell?
Analyze the problem:

a) What is asked?
b) What are the given facts?
c) What strategies may be used to
answer the problem?
Setting up a proportion:
ROY 3 15
Al 5 N
Roy : Al = Roy : Al
3 : 5 = 15 : N
The proportion is called a direct
proportion. The quantities change in the
same direction. As the number of
newspapers that Roy sells increases, the
number of newspapers that Al sells also
increases.
In direct proportion, when one quantity
increases, the other quantity increases at the
same rate and vice versa. The quantities change
in the same direction.
