predicate; it also must
express a complete
thought.
It refers to the general order of
words in a sentence in which

Subject + Linking verb + Complement
 A SUBJECT is a noun, pronoun, or group of
words that act as noun.
 A LINKING VERB is a type of verb that
"links" the subject of a sentence to the rest of
the sentence without showing action.
 A COMPLEMENT is a noun, pronoun, or
adjective that completes the meaning of the
predicate.

 Type of verb that "links" the subject of a
sentence to the rest of the sentence without
showing action.
 Does not express action
 “Be” verbs are the most common linking
verbs
 Sensory verbs are also examples of linking
verbs

was must be shall have been
were will be will have been
be should be should have been
being could be could have been
been would be would have been

COMPLEMENT
 Word or group of words that comes after a
linking verb and renames, identifies or
describes the subject
 Complete the meaning of the predicate of a
sentence
 Three types of complement:
1. Noun
2. Pronoun
3. Adjective
