Secular Music of the

Medieval Period
Secular Music
- Is non religious music that is
intended for entertainment.
- The term “secular” comes from the
Latin word saeculum and this was
used in the early Christian church to
mean “the world “ as opposed to the
Church.
- therefore, this music concerned with
affairs of the world rather than
affairs of the spirit or religion.
Not all musicians were regulated by
the church during the Medieval
period. There was secular music
known as Court Music that became
popular during the latter part of the
period.
Troubadours
- Are travelling musicians who
performed in different places to
entertain with their music about
courtly love, chivalry and romance.
Troubadours
may either be
noble people
or people with
the rank, or
knights
playing for
lords.
The Chanson and the Canso were
the songs of the troubadours.
Chanson
- Is a French secular song during
medieval period.
- It is a popular lyric-driven song
based on poems.
- A singer specializing in chansons
is known as a Chansonnier
Canson
- Is a troubadors formal love song.
The troubadours had higher ranks
in medieval society. One of these
is the Minstrels- were the
servants hired to serve in courts.
Also similar to minstrels,
Jongleurs - were hired to
entertain crowds with acrobatic
tricks.
Jongleur
an itinerant
medieval
entertainer
proficient in
juggling,
acrobatics,
music, and
recitation.
Minstrel -a specialist entertainer who sang
songs and played musical instruments.
Troubadours used instrument such as
lute,viols,harps
In Germany
Troubadours
were called
“Minnesinger
s” or singers of
love songs
Adam de la Halle
- was one of the popular composer of
the medieval period.
- He was known as Adam le Bossu or
Adam the Hunchback
- He was a poet and musician, who
was known for his chansons and
poetic debates ( Jeux-partis)
- One of his famous works is the
musical play “ Le Jeu de Robin et
Marion”
Adam de la
Halle
was one of the
popular composer
of the medieval
period
