TOMOGRAPHY IMAGE MANIPULATION Introduction
What is an image manipulation?
The process of altering or enhancing digital images using software or other techniques to achieve a desired outcome. Importance: 1. Improve diagnosis accuracy 2. Enhance image quality for better visualization 3. Help surgeons plan operations 4. Monitor disease progression CONTENTS Introduction Types of image manipulation Windowing and leveling Zooming 3D construction Benefits Disadvantages Conclusion The objectives of CT scan image manipulation:- 1. Enhance image quality and clarity 2. Improve visual appeal and aesthetics 3. Remove imperfections and noise 4. Manipulate images for creative expression 5. Extract valuable information from images Types of Image Manipulation 1. Windowing 2. Leveling 3. Zooming 4. 3D Reconstruction WINDOWING Windowing is a technique used to adjust the contrast and brightness of an image by setting a specific range of pixel values. Windowing enhances image visibility by: Improving contrast Reducing noise Highlighting specific features - Suppressing unwanted details Windowing involves adjusting two key parameters: 1.*Window Width (WW):* Range of pixel values 2.*Window Center (WC):* Midpoint of the window width,it is also called as window level Leveling Leveling in CT image manipulation refers to the adjustment of the grayscale range (brightness and contrast) to enhance the visibility of specific tissues or structures within the scan. Zooming Zooming in CT image manipulation refers to the process of magnifying specific regions of a CT (computed tomography) scan for closer examination. Zooming helps in diagnostic assessments, surgical planning, and treatment monitoring by providing enhanced focus on areas of clinical significance. 3D reconstruction 3D reconstruction in medical imaging, particularly in CT (computed tomography) scans, refers to the process of creating a three-dimensional model of a patient's anatomy from 2D image slices. This technique allows for better visualization of complex structures and can aid in diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgical interventions. Advantages Enhanced visualisation: by adjusting the contrast , brightness and filters make it easy to detect any abnormalities. 3D reconstruction: By manipulation of image It can easily created 3D model of the scanned area like complex areas like fractures, cancer and other structures which aid or useful for surgical planning Segmenting and Isolating Regions of Interest: CT image manipulation enables healthcare professionals to isolate specific areas of interest, such as a tumours, by removing or reducing the visibility of surrounding tissues. Reduction of artifacts : Manipulation helps reduce or eliminate these artifacts, improving the quality of the images. Multi-Planar Views: Unlike conventional X-rays, which provide only 2D images, CT scans produce multiple cross-sectional images. Image manipulation allows clinicians to view the body from different planes (axial, coronal, and sagittal), providing a comprehensive understanding of complex anatomical structures. Trauma and Emergency Diagnostics: In trauma cases, image manipulation helps quickly assess internal injuries such as organ lacerations, fractures, or internal bleeding, providing rapid, life-saving information to emergency medical teams. Disadvantages False positives / negative : excessive filter or enchance can create artifacts and may lead radiologist to detect abnormalities that does not exist. Loss of diagnostic accuracy: over processing which can alter anatomical details . Time consuming: delaying diagnostic and treatment . Radiation exposure and repeated scan: if image quality is unsatisfied repeat scan might be necessary . Reduced diagnostic confidence: dependent on manipulated image. Technician expertise required : proper manipulation requires skilled personnel. Conclusions
CT image manipulation can improve the clarity of medical scans but
it must be used carefully . If overdone or undone properly it can lead to mistake in diagnosis, added costs and longer wait times. Its important to balance improving the image while keeping them accurate and reliable for the best medical results.
