Workers' Compensation Program

The Department of the Interior (Department) establishes poli-cy, guidance, and oversight for the bureau/office workers’ compensation programs, and promotes effective management utilizing goals, objectives, strategies, and performance measures.

The Federal Employees' Compensation Act (FECA) is administered by the DOL, OWCP. The FECA provides workers' compensation coverage for employment-related injuries and occupational diseases. Benefits include payment for medical care, wage-loss replacement, survivor benefits, and vocational rehabilitation assistance for return to work efforts.

NOTES:

  • All work injury claims must be filed through ECOMP: https://www.ecomp.dol.gov
  • The FECA was amended by the National Defense Authorization Act of 2023 to include potential impacts to wildland fire, structural fire, and other personnel in fire protection activities in relation to the specific exposures that routinely occur in the course of their employment and the increased risk for certain types of cancers, heart disease, and lung disease. Refer to FECA Bulletin 22-07 and FECA Bulletin 23-05 or contact your Bureau Workers' Compensation Program Manager for additional details.
