DNP3 (Distributed Network Protocol) DNP3 及び対応する IEC のプロトコルは電力セクターで広く使用されており、ほかのセクターの市場にもいくらか浸透してきている。DNP フォーラム及びIEC 委員会は、それぞれのプロトコルに発信元及び内容に対する認証機能を追加しようという協調的な取組みを行っている。 OPC UA OPC Foundation が策定している次世代のOPCプロトコル。従来の DCOM ベースのプロトコルとは異なり、XML ベースのプロトコルとなっており、多くのセキュリティ機能が仕様そのものに含められている。仕様は複数のパートに分かれており、一部のパートは(2008年)現在も策定作業が進められている。（リンク先文書はOPC会員にのみ公開）
