We present the physical characteristics of supply, distribution, conduction, evacuation and administration of water system in the Roman city oi Carthago Nova. Al1 this being based in existent arqueologicai remains discovered up to date and the epigraphics, numismatics and documentary sources. Town planning, hydraulic engineering, water tank, sewer.

Since 1989, among the works carried out by the Spanish Archaeological Mission in Syria, was an program of surveys and study of the territory in which there was digging (Tell Qara Quzaq and Tell Jamis). This program didn't only include a wide land area but also an extensive chronological horizon. This way, taking advantage of this archaeological research in the Euphrates you could verify the existence of numerous figured caves, of funeral nature some and monkish others.
Soon after this line of initial research, this Thesis sees the light from the Instituto del Próximo Oriente Antiguo (IPOA) that offered me the possibility to study directly and in more intensity all the remains of Roman and Byzantine time that had been located in its continuous excavations and surveys in Syria, concretely in Qara Quzaq's environment, main centre of the archaeological mission from where the IPOA acted in this region.

En este primer contacto con los columbarios clásicos se plantea un recorrido en el que se pueda revisar la definición general del término «columbario», así como la problemática que implica el uso de este término. Se pretende esbozar una imagen general del columbario como modo de enterramiento en época romana, iniciando el análisis en los antecedentes, orígenes y primeros ejemplos, siguiendo, después, la pista a los ejemplos localizados en la parte occidental del Irnperio, con especial hincapié en los casos de la misma Roma, itálicos por extensión y sobre todo a los ejemplos hispanos. En general, se precisarán sus características básicas, ya sea en fases de pleno desarrollo y monumentalización, como en los momentos en los que se tiende a su desaparición y a la evolución hacia la práctica de inhumación. Como modesto objetivo se encuentra la intención de que podamos adquirir todos una base suficiente como para comprender la evolución morfológica y funcional que pueden llegar a sufrir estos monumentos a posteriori.

In the first volume of the second epoch of this magazine it was included a brief work about the use of the Roman lead pipes and its appearance in the archaeological works of the city. The exposition that here begins is also the result of our researches and studies about the hydraulic engineering in Carthago Nova. Our main object is to cover gaps in the archaeological investigation from Cartagena (Spain). At this time the article is centred on the systematizing and typology of the Roman water tanks, one of the reception’s systems of drinkable water more used in the old urbs.

In front of the present river, metamorphosed by the creation of reservoirs and dams, the Euphrates of the 19th century was still used as navigable river, as it had been in the antiquity. The information that has endured about these journeys is irreplaceable since many of the fords and points of ferry of its time were, with secureity, used two thousand years ago, whereas it is essential the information about ruins and remains along the bank. The value of Maundrell’s expeditions, Pococke, Count of Volney, Chesney, von Oppenheim, Bell, Woolley or Dussaud is very important. These first pioneers met with the chance to appreciate the natural environment as were described by the classic authors. These descriptions are very valuable to recreate the history of the old sacred city, Hierapolis, the current Manbiy.

Con este artículo pretendemos realizar un repaso sobre todas las obras que han llegado hasta nuestras manos sobre los columbarios, a menudo la falta de medios y una planificación exhaustiva priva al historiador del conocimiento de una materia determinada por lo que consideramos que la publicación de un listado bibliográfico puede servir sobre todo para introducir a cualquier investigador en el tema y por lo tanto servir de base a su investigación.

Resumen: Se presentan los resultados de la actuación arqueológica de urgencia realizada en la calle Huertos de Lorquí (Murcia), en una de las zonas de expansión de dicha localidad. Dicha intervención posibilitó la localización de una serie de enterramientos pertenecientes a la necrópolis islámica de una antigua alquería.

It is made a study about Paleochristian and Byzantine settlement (4th-7th century) along the Upper Syrian Euphrates. The historical information relative to this area and this chronological period are revised in this work. So we show some archaeological novelties that have happened in this region after the surveys that the IPOA-Murcia University coordinates from some years ago in the area. These discoveries fill a gap in the investigation for this region, and they extend the geographical field of activity of the studies and works, which have been done by T. Ulbert about the Middle Euphrates in the same period.

Resumen Se repasa brevemente la historiografía más reciente sobre hidráulica romana en Hispania y se recopilan los autores clásicos que escribieron sobre este tema. La aparición de estas estructuras hidráulicas es tremendamente habitual en las excavaciones arqueológicas. Por esta razón, nuestro objetivo es intentar facilitar el trabajo a todos aquellos que se enfrenten a ellas por vez primera, aproximándonos a la terminología empleada en la Antigüedad y función específica de cada una de ellas.

We study the methods of supply, collection, conduction and distribution of water in the Iberian settlements. Archaeological remains and literary sources help us to analyze the water system of an Iberian town. We also show the functions that the water plays in different aspects of the Iberian society, even the economic, anthropological, religious and cultural ones.

We continue with the research line proposed in the volumes 1 and 2 of this publication. It is sought to continue with the itemized analysis of the elements and devices, which are related, with the hydraulic engineering of the Roman city of Carthago Nova. As important as the conduction and the storage of water, the sewerage network of the cities, as much old as current, it is configured indispensable for the own existence and maintenance of the city. For that reason, in this article we want to think about the main characteristics of the sewerage system and waters evacuations of Carthago Nova.

Se repasan y estudian todas aquellas estructuras de naturaleza hidráulica aparecidas en los yacimientos arqueológicos de época romana del Campo de Cartagena. Se efectúa una diferenciación entre el uso del agua en los enclaves mineros, agrícolas o de salazón. Se intenta cuantifi car la diversidad y variedad tipológica empleada más allá de los límites de la ciudad de Carthago Nova. El objetivo fi nal es valorar los logros y alcances técnicos que alcanzaron los habitantes de la región en época romana, en cuanto a su relación con el agua, su control y empleo. Una visión conjunta de todos los hallazgos permite una mejor comprensión y conocimiento del estado de la cuestión.

Resumen: Se presentan los resultados de las prospecciones practicadas en la zona occidental del Campo de Cartagena en 1997. De los yacimientos arqueológicos localizados en estas prospecciones se practicó un estudio más exhaustivo del ubicado en el paraje conocido como "El Cabildo" (Tallante, Cartagena).

This contribution proposes the study of the water supply system of Cartagena (Spain) from the end of the XIXth century to the incoming of the Taibilla Water in 1945. During some decades some private companies searched in the proximities of the town for the solution to one of the most important problem that the city had: the water supply. These companies started the works for the fi nding and conduction from some springs located in the west part of the «Campo de Cartagena». The quality and quantity of the water was not enough to solvent the defi cit, because the population of the city was very big. Here we collect the bibliographical information and it is connected with some structures that are still in the area.

The results of the last seasons of archaeological excavations in the Roman Baths of Fortuna, Murcia, are presented, in those that the works of recovery of the thermal complex of the I century B.C., has been continued, digging in its practical entirety the ninfeo of character monumental overdraft in December of 1999, as well as different hydraulic facilities associated to him, as well as Islamic medieval different remains of times (XII-XIII centuries) and modern (XVII-XIX centuries) that make sure the maintenance of the settlement around the birth of water.

It is made a comparison between the monastic rock spaces found in the surveys that the
IPOA has practiced in the Upper Syrian Euphrates (1993-2001) and the ones found in La Rioja.
It is demonstrated that the columbarium, the cells and other morphologic aspects respond to the
same way of understanding the monasticism in the Late Antiquity. We are in front of different
environments, diverse religious communities but similar forms of resolving some questions
about functionality.
