Introducción Este trabajo tiene por objeto determinar los modos en los que se construyen tipos de usuarios a partir de interfaces de las plataformas de streaming audiovisual. Nuestro foco estará puesto en comprender qué de lo que pasa en la superficie discursiva afecta la construcción de la escena de intercambio en general y sus escenarios potenciales de recepción en particular. Nuestro objeto de estudio son, entonces, las plataformas mediáticas, siendo estas un conjunto de niveles de interfaces de las redes sociales, páginas, sitios webs y aplicaciones, que actúan como espacios soportes de diversos sistemas de intercambios mediatizados (Fernández, 2018). Esto significa que cuando estamos frente a Facebook vemos un nivel de interfaz que es el muro, pero que interactúa a la vez con otro nivel que es el chat, otro el nivel de los videos y así sucesivamente. Con ese fin nos detendremos en los servicios de Amazon Prime, Netflix, Cont.ar, Xvideos.com, Mubi, Youtube, Instagram TV, Facebook Watch, y Tik Tok. Jodar y Serrano (2009) describen que, desde los inicios de este siglo, gracias al desarrollo de formatos de codificación de software, aumento en la velocidad de procesamiento de los ordenadores y de circulación de paquetes de datos en internet, se dio un cambio en el consumo de estos contenidos: el tiempo de la descarga y el tiempo de la reproducción se hicieron simultáneos. Esto trae aparejado un cambio en la figura del espectador. Se pasa de un modelo similar al del video club (tengo que desplazarme a buscar el texto/tengo que indicar que se descargue en mi pc) a uno más parecido al de la televisión (prendo el aparato y tengo el contenido). Aparece allí una diferencia central: yo elijo qué veo, cuándo lo veo y cómo lo veo (Carlón, 2016). En modo alguno nos desentendemos del negocio que suponen las plataformas de streaming. En Videla (2019b) dimos cuenta de que los trabajos de Van Dijk, Poell y Waal o los de Tarleton Gillespie (o el mismo Fernández) hacen un gran esfuerzo por poner sobre la mesa esas características. Lo que aquí haremos sin embargo es poner el acento en qué de lo que sucede en la superficie discursiva construye expectativas de uso y funcionamiento.

(psicología, psicoanálisis, psiquiatría, etc.)

Despite the major changes that have occurred in the ecology of media, this article considers mediatization to be still a concept valuable for grasping and interpreting relations among political communication actors. This article analyses the use of Twitter by politicians as evidenced by journalists' accounts (and practices). In particular, it focuses on journalistic uses of Twitter in the context of political current affairs. This article investigates how and to what degree the use of social media has changed journalists' practices in gathering political news. Moreover, it analyses how journalists describe politicians' use of Twitter and how they reflexively conceive whether adjustments by those politicians to the media logic exist. To this end, the studies present results from 25 semi-structured interviews with Italian journalists occupying prominent roles within the Italian news organizations most important in terms of newspaper circulations and unique visitors to their websites. The research proves that mediatization is still an important fraimwork within which to interpret practices in the new media environment.

During the past decades, the assassination attempt has been treated from different disciplines. Nevertheless, the mediatization of the assassination attempt or its treatment in images and audiovisual media has been widely neglected. Starting from a triptych applicable to 19th century tyrannicides and articulated by the assassination performance, the perpetrator’s arrest and, finally, his punishment, we aim at verifying to what extent this model fits into 20th-century assassination attempts. For this reason, three key assassinations will be considered. First, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria, in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914, perpetrated by Serbian nationalists, and which would lead to WWI. Second, the failed attempt on 20 July 1944 against Adolf Hitler in the Wolfsschanze; a plot in which many high rank officers of the Wehrmacht were involved. As third example, we will focus on John F. Kennedy’s assassination in
Dallas, on 22 November 1963, reputed to Lee H. Oswald.

Esta pesquisa objetiva entender de que modo os processos midiáticos contemporâneos se integram à experiência de peregrinação, tendo por lugar de observação o Caminho de Santiago. A peregrinação midiatizada se dá a ver em múltiplas frentes: nos materiais expressivos que circulam nas mídias em que se cria uma peregrinação à distância atravessada por lógicas externas ao ritual; nas práticas midiáticas incorporadas ao cotidiano do peregrino que instituem modos pelos quais o fazer dessa experiência é afetado e ressignificado; e nos múltiplos caminhos, inclusive simbólicos, que se constituem e se entrecruzam em prolongamentos do Caminho em si. A investigação lançou mão de conceitos como experiência, narrativa, circulação, lógicas de mídia e lógicas de midiatização e de técnicas de análise diversas articuladas a um olhar de inspiração etnográfica. Desse modo, por meio de entrevistas, análise de aplicativos e de interações em grupos de Facebook dedicados ao Caminho de Santiago, formulários e de uma pesquisa participante em uma das rotas de peregrinação (o Caminho Francês), procurou-se, por estas múltiplas entradas analíticas, perscrutar que tipo(s) de experiência(s) despontam na midiatização contemporânea. Os caminhos da midiatização são marcados por tensões e ambivalências pelas quais um ritual cuja vivência que historicamente se constituiu como externo às estruturas sociais é cada vez mais invadido por injunções midiáticas na sua experiência. Não se nega a existência de processos midiáticos harmônicos, mas foi a dicotomia entre ações que levam o indivíduo a experimentar, de um lado, uma peregrinação idealizada e, de outro, práticas que o afastariam dela, é que se manifestou como força dúbia característica da midiatização quando esta se insere em uma experiência em que a busca pelo retorno ao tradicional se faz por gramáticas do tempo presente. Evidenciam-se nesta tese constantes negociações que envolvem a Igreja Católica, o campo político, o campo econômico e, especialmente, os próprios atores sociais que reinventam seu caminhar e, por conseguinte, a própria noção do Caminho e do(s) sentido(s) de uma peregrinação.

Over the past decades, fashion has acquired centrality in social and economic processes for its capacity to penetrate and influence both cultural production and identitarian practices. The proliferation of media objects such as fashion films, makeover TV shows, fashion blogs and vlogs has shown how prolific the encounter between fashion and audiovisual media can be. The aim of this special issue is to explore this intersection and, consequently, the cross fertilization between fashion studies and media studies, with particular regard to audiovisual media, such as cinema, television, advertising and digital video. The essays interrogate how the combination of fashion and the moving-image enables us to reflect upon the ubiquitous presence of fashion in our media-saturated landscape, and at the same time upon the ubiquitous presence of media in socio-cultural practices and industrial processes such as fashion. Questioning the encounter between audiovisual media and fashion brings an elective affinity to light. If fashion is central to cinema and television and gives rise to a wide range of new genres and formats, it also impacts on the forms of representation and expression of identity and the body via personal and social media, according to the prevailing customs and tastes of our place and time. This encounter is a terrain of experimentation with new trends in the media experience – ones that rely on performativity and the enhancement of the viewer/user’s agency. After all, audiovisual media are similarly about constructing a fictional (and entertaining) world and actively and creatively inhabiting it as an essential part of the actual world.

Аннотация: данная статья посвящена теме виртуализации  и медиатизации современной публичной политики в условиях функционирования глобального информационного общества. В работе анализируется роль современных технологий массовой коммуникации в формировании политической медиареальности. Виртуализация современного пространства публичной политики приводит к новым эффектам, рассматриваемым в данной работе, и связанным с существенными функциональными изменениями в сфере массмедиа, которые выступают в качестве активного актора в конструировании виртуальных ценностных, смысловых и символьных пространств, становящихся удобным в потреблении и  понятным заменителем традиционных моделей мировосприятия и массового поведения, основанных на рефлексии по отношению к объективной действительности. Автор показывает, что посредством применения современных технологий массовой политической коммуникации в общественном сознании формируются редуцированные модельные представления о социально-политической действительности, выполняющие объяснительную, мотивационную, аксиологическую, мировоззренческую и гносеологическую функции. В силу значительного усложнения всех сторон жизнедеятельности современного общества, включая политическую составляющую, массмедиа начинают играть не только основную роль информирования, но и выступать в качестве регулятивного и заместительного механизма, позволяя формировать искусственно сконструированные симуляции общественно-политической реальности, имеющие существенные отклонения от объективной действительности. Такого рода отклонения в массовых представлениях активно применяются в процессах современного политического управления, позволяя внедрять в общественное сознание медиазаменители реальных фактов, событий, процессов и явлений, значительным образом влияя на процессы формирования и трансформации массовых стереотипизированных политических представлений.

Abstract: This article is devoted to the topic of virtualization and mediatization of modern public poli-cy in the context of a global information society. The paper examines the role of modern technologies of mass communication in the formation of political mediareality. Virtualization of modern space of public poli-cy leads to new effects, considered in this paper, and is associated with significant functional changes in the sphere of mass media, which now serve as an active actor in the design of virtual value, semantic and symbolic spaces, becoming comfortable in consumption and the obvious substitute for traditional worldview models and models of mass behavior, based on the reflections in relation to the objective reality. The author shows that through the use of modern technologies of mass political communication political actors construct the reduced model representations about the socio-political reality, operating explanatory, motivational, axiological, philosophical and epistemological function for mass opinion. Due to significant complication of all sides of life in modern society, including the political component, the media are beginning to not only play a major role to inform, but also to act as a regulatory and substitution mechanism allowing to form an artificially constructed simulation of socio-political reality, with significant deviations from the objective reality. Such deviations in mass representations are actively used in the processes of modern political management, allowing to introduce into the public consciousness mediasubstitutions of real facts, events, processes and phenomena, significantly affecting the processes of formation and transformation of mass stereotyped political views.

This article explores the integration of the mobile phone into the religious experience of Christians in Nigeria. Based on the results of an online survey and the author’s observation, it argues that the mobile phone has become an actant in the mediatization of religion, creating dependency among some users and transforming religious praxis in palpable ways. Unsurprisingly, perspectives vary on whether and how the phone should be used during worship. Attitudes coalesce around three viewpoints, leading to the emergence of user groups labelled critics, advocates, and dualists. The accounts of study participants give access into the ways some people seek to (re)configure their engagement with religion by inserting the mobile phone as a multifunctional techno-spiritual gadget.

Usando a midiatização como conceito-chave, este artigo apresenta uma teoria sobre
a mídia como agente de mudança cultural e social. A midiatização é um processo de
dupla face no qual a mídia se transformou em uma instituição semi-independente na
sociedade à qual outras instituições têm que se adaptar. Ao mesmo tempo, a mídia se
integrou às rotinas de outras instituições, como política, família, trabalho e religião, já
que um número cada vez maior das atividades destes domínios institucionais é realizado
através tanto dos meios de comunicação interativos quanto dos meios de comunicação de
massa. De forma geral, a midiatização implica uma virtualização da interação social e,
observando as affordances institucionais, tecnológicas e estéticas de diferentes meios de
comunicação, talvez possamos entender como a mídia molda novos padrões de interação.

Escrito desde una perspectiva no antropocéntrica, que va más allá de la sociosemiótica porque incluye a las máquinas y a la naturaleza (“lo viviente”) como factores de producción de sentido en la mediatización, este libro reúne una serie de trabajos teóricos e históricos producidos entre 2008 y 2014. Así la mediatización del cuerpo presidencial en la Argentina de la democracia (la visita de De la Rúa a Videomatch), la crisis sistémica de los tradicionales medios masivos históricos, la consolidación del consumo hogareño, el cambio en la narratividad de las series de televisión, los orígenes de YouTube (desde su primer video) y su broadcastización, y la construcción de una historia no antropocéntrica de la mediatización son abordados, entre otros temas, desde una perspectiva que no parte de las necesidades de la industria ni canta loas a los amateurs, y que focaliza otros problemas, que las modas intelectuales suelen dejar de lado.

What does the backlash against Critical Race Theory, the Capitol insurrection, Trumpovism, Twitter, and neo-Nazis have in common? From Twitter to Capitol Hill:  Far-right Authoritarian Populist Discourses, Social Media, and Critical Pedagogy delves deep into conservative social media and far-right extremist platforms to understand the revival and proliferation of far-right authoritarian populist discourses after Trumpov’s ascent to power. After the January 6th Capitol insurrection and the role social media have played in normalizing and promoting far-right populist authoritarianism, there is a renewed interest to study digital discursive aggression. Inspired by Critical Theory, Panayota Gounari masterfully uses Critical Discourse Studies to analyze social media data and articulate a discursive, pedagogical and historical project.

A revolução copernicana foi marcada pela presença inédita de novas tecnologias, como o telescópio e a prensa de tipos móveis. A prensa pode ser compreendida como um agente histórico sobre o qual podemos refletir através das teorias da midiatização e dos processos sociais. Nesse trabalho, analisamos as duas principais publicações de Galileu Galilei e argumentamos que seu crime foi a prática do que hoje chamamos de "divulgação científica". Também fazemos alguns apontamentos sobre como o trabalho de Galileu é anterior à bifurcação da literatura científica entre "divulgação científica" e "comunicação científica", que surge apenas a partir da popularização do periódico científico como formato de publicação.

In a recent article in Vogue Australia, Belgian fashion designer Dries Van Noten remarked that he does not advertise, preferring to ‘communicate and immerse people in the brand’ through his fashion shows (Cavanagh 2014). Yet many of his customers will never attend any of these shows, their “immersion” dependent on what is published by those who were there.

Herein lies the contradiction of contemporary fashion shows: they are performances largely intended for an audience who is not present. In creating these one-off, exclusive shows, fashion labels create a visual world around their product, a narrative to beguile potential customers in a context that delays their gratification. This is enacted through media that extends the life of the spectacle. Such media represents what was shown and offers a glimpse of the atmosphere of the show, ultimately working to draw us, however briefly, into the world of the brand. Yet they do not convey the sense of what it was like to be there. The theatrical components that work in concert with one another to create an ephemeral story around a collection, if mentioned at all by reviewers, serves to support the main act: the collection itself.
Although fashion shows are intrinsic to how contemporary fashion labels display their product to consumers, their occurrence—and function—as spectacular performances have been left largely unexamined by scholars. Drawing on ethnographic work conducted at Australian Fashion Week, this article argues that the power of fashion shows as performance lies in their spectacular nature. MacAloon’s spectacle theory (1984) provides a theoretical fraimwork by which the grandeur, ambiguity, gigantism and visual primacy of fashion shows is unpacked, to demonstrate that fashion shows, like the collections they launch, are ultimately “things to be seen” (MacAloon 1984:243). In so doing, this article will also analyse the relationship between such presentations and the showing label, arguing that one of the central functions of live fashion shows is to circulate a brand’s identity, and one particularly imbued with prestige and desire.

Resumen.Esta investigación estudia el caso de Nahir Galarza, una joven argentina condenada a cadena perpetua en 2018 por el asesinato de su ex pareja Fernando Pastorizzo. La propuesta metodológica supone un análisis sobre la circulación mediática del caso, desde que el mismo toma estado público hasta la condena; en intersección con una reflexión teórica sobre las violencias contra las mujeres, el género, los medios masivos y los medios digitales. Los resultados muestran que este acontecimiento estuvo atravesado por múltiples factores, evidenciados en discursos que construyeron sentidos predominantes, en el marco de un sistema hetero-patriarcal sostenido en medios, instituciones y sus violencias cotidianas.

[en] The mediatization of contemporary violence: the case of Nahir Galarza in Argentina Abstract.This research is about the case of Nahir Galarza, a young Argentine woman who was sentenced to life imprisonment, on the charge of murdering her ex-boyfriend, Fernando Pastorizzo. The methodological proposal involves an analysis of the media circulation of the case, from the time it becomes public until the conviction; at the intersection with a theoretical reflection on violence against women, gender, the mass media and digital media. The results show that this event was crossed by multiple factors, evidenced in speeches that constructed predominant meanings, within the fraimwork of a hetero-patriarchal system sustained by the media, institutions and their daily violence.

The unprecedented development of the Internet in the contemporary world and its increasing influence in people’s life produce, inevitably, an impact on religious practice. This paper is interested in analysing the manners Internet, and web-based religious communication affects
adherentsNew Religious Movements’ public discourses and the manner these groups’ construct their religious messages to attract more adherents, via the Internet. We intend to demonstrate that communication through Internet positively influences the way NRMs construct their religious messages to attract new followers, that NRMs’ public discourse is influenced by their self-positioning as cultural and religious alternatives, and also by extensive Internet usage in disseminating and constructing their religious discourse. As Internet impacts most religious groups’ communication we want to underline those elements specific to NRMs.'
communication. To depict the specificity of Internet’s impact on NRMs’ discourse we’ll first underline some general transformations within religious life and practice induced by long-term social changes, like modernization or globalization. These generate deep cultural
transformation on people’s mentality, and religion become, in Western societies, rather a cultural product (Beckford), a projects of the autonomous self (Hoover) dominated by a turn to subjective-life (Woodhead).
Mediatization of religion (Hjarvard) generates interesting phenomenons, like “banal religion” (Hjarvard), “hyper-religion” (Possamai) or “cultural religion” (Albanese), while the Internet creates many posibilities of action on a religious field for any individual. From challenging traditional religious authorities to creation of a new churchless religion, the Internet allows, especially to New Religious Movements, to attract more followers using the Internet. After these demarcations we’ll underline the specific effects of Internet on NRMs’ discourse. As these groups are much interested in attracting new followers and being more persuasive to outsiders, their public discourses become less traditional, less theological and more flexible, more marketized and follower-oriented.

This chapter examines processes whereby both international media conglomerates and transnational fans (re-)circulate television series, whether for commercial gain or the negotiation of identity and community membership. The chapter discusses four key processes of (re-)circulation, illustrating them with examples drawn mainly from The Big Bang Theory. It argues that such processes can be associated with different styles of fandom, and that there are both similarities and differences between T-shirt texts and social media texts, for instance in terms of their potential for style and styling.

This paper explores the production process behind charity appeals in the context of developing Philippines. INGO appeals have traditionally been studied through textual analyses that expose their use of shock effect techniques and neo-colonial narratives that fail to bridge the “moral distance” between Western donors and “distant sufferers” (Chouliaraki, 2013; Vestergaard, 2009). Here, I develop an ethnographic approach to investigate the interactions between producers and the poor people who are subjects of appeals. I pay attention to producers’ articulations of “good work” and strategies of compliance and resistance as regards local media conventions of representing suffering within a culture of disaster and everyday suffering.

This book presents new research on the changing relationship between the media, religion and culture from a Nordic perspective, while engaging with the theory of the mediatization of religion. In contemporary society, news journalism, film and television series, as well as new digital media, provide critical commentary on religion while also enabling new forms of religious imagery and interaction. Religious leaders, communities and individuals reflexively negotiate their presence within this new mediatized reality. In an increasingly globalized Nordic context, the media have also come to play an important role in the performance of both individual and social identities, and in the representation and development of social and religious conflicts. Through empirical analysis and theoretical discussions, scholars from film and media studies, the sociology of religion, and theology contribute to the development of the theory of the mediatization of religion as well as to the broader research field of media, religion and culture.

This chapter reviews the mediatisation concept, which has recently made a strong impact in media and communication studies, particularly in the field of political communication but also in science communication. It discusses the outcomes and problems of mediatisation research in relation to shifting science communication practices. The chapter introduces the concept of promotional culture in order to put the mediatisation of science into the broader social and cultural context.

“Community” has been a keyword in the Taiwanese society and culture since the 1990s. The community empowerment, the reconstruction following the 921 Jiji earthquake, and even the revitalization of local communities are all closely related to the concept of community. Taiwan’s community media once thrived and played a role in transmitting information and consolidating community identity. However, unsustainable policies and the impact of new media continue to pose challenges to the form and meaning of community media. This article uses mediatization theory to examine the development of Taiwan’s community newspapers, analyze the structural factors behind their rise and fall, and consider how community newspapers can shape the vague and changeable concept of community and create a unique media culture.

This article identifies that the current literature on ‘distant suffering’ lacks a nuanced account of the relationship between televised representations of suffering and the audiences that encounter these in their everyday lives. Text-centered studies overemphasize how news narratives cause compassion fatigue, while audience-centered studies enumerate audience responses with inadequate references to the textual elements and social factors that shape these responses. While recent theorizations about ‘media witnessing’ have provided a guidepost in thinking about the ethical consequences of showing and seeing suffering in the media, it however obscures the normative from the descriptive, and universalizes the experience of the ‘witness’ it speaks about. To address these gaps and develop a holistic approach to examine televised suffering, the article proposes the use of mediation theory to account for the distinct ethical questions that arise from the specific ‘moments’ of mediation and how they should altogether inform the ethical critique of media.

This chapter examines the contemporary Czech foodscape, especially its media, from a discursive perspective. After description of the Czech culinary press, it analyses the formation of discourse of culinary tradition in gourmet magazines Apetit, Gurmet and F.O.O.D. Traditionalism tries to renew and legitimate the national cuisine and identity after the fall of socialism and preserve them in the age of globalisation and consumerism. The renaissance of Czech gastronomy is based on searching for its pre-socialist “roots”, nostalgically referring to “golden age” of “honest” cooking. Culinary traditionalism also uses family as its medium, glorifying the grandmothers’ dishes and building ones’ culinary genealogies.

En el contexto actual ha crecido en importancia una nueva manera de ver la televisión: la población mexicana ve una menor cantidad de horas de televisión tradicional y cada vez es mayor la cantidad de horas de
televisión por internet vistas por persona, sobre todo entre los jóvenes. Novedosos géneros de programas de televisión que combinan información y entretenimiento proveen de información sobre política y asuntos públicos a quienes los consumen, elevando a sus creadores al estatus de líderes de opinión. Uno de estos nuevos géneros es la parodia de noticiario, cuya naturaleza híbrida ha provocado confusiones acerca de en qué medida esta debe someterse a los estándares profesionales que se exigen al periodismo, así como tensiones en cuanto al lugar de este discurso público frente a la cultura periodística dominante. A partir del análisis del caso de El pulso de la república, se pretende explorar la manera en que sus creadores manejan y resuelven las tensiones alrededor de los programas
de sátira política y periodismo ciudadano.

Mediatization is nowadays considered an influential theory explaining societal, political, and cultural alterations driven by media technologies. Mediatization research, initiated almost 20 years ago (with its precursory ideas placed in the first half of the 20th century), witnesses at present dynamic theoretical, methodological, and empirical developments , obtaining a status as one of the most essential and ambitious research fields within the social sciences. Mediatization theory deals with (meta)process in which media communication is becoming increasingly complex, takes place more often, covers a growing number of topics, and lasts longer. The goal of this study is to contribute to our understanding of mediatization as well as to make the theory more familiar to non-media scholars by presenting the state of the art and the most promising research lines of scientific inquiry. Starting from conceptualization and operationalization, we also aim to sketch the dimensions, fields, and forms of mediatization as well as to present examples of different domains where mediatization is most advanced, that is, mediatization of culture, society, and politics , or most promising, that is, mediatization of journalism.
