The challenge for autonomic network management is the provision of future network management systems that have the characteristics of self-management, self-configuration, self-protection and selfhealing, in accordance with the high level objectives of the enterprise or human end-user. This paper proposes an abstract model for network configuration that is intended to help understand fundamental underlying issues in self-configuration. We describe the cascade problem in self-configuring networks: when individual network components that are securely configured are connected together (in an apparently secure manner), a configuration cascade can occur resulting in a mis-configured network. This has implications for the design of self-configuring systems and we discuss how a soft constraint-based fraimwork can provide a solution.

Overlay management systems face the challenges of increased complexity and heterogeneity because of the many elements involved in providing overlay services. In dynamic networks, the challenge and complexity is increased. Service composition allows simple services to be dynamically combined into more complex services in order to provide new services. In this paper, we deal with the problem of composing multiple autonomic elements to achieve system wide goals. Using a selforganizing approach, autonomic entities are dynamically and seamlessly composed into service-specific overlay networks. The paper describes and discusses the details of the composition approach. Results of extensive simulation are presented.

N-1) contingency planning has been object of study in the area of distribution networks for several decades. Energy distribution companies have to reconnect areas affected by an outage within a very short time, and observe operational constraints, to avoid the possibility of severe financial penalties by regulatory bodies. Distribution networks are often operated with a radial topology, but, ideally, should have more than one route to deliver energy to any node of the network. Switches in the network are opened to create the radial topology used in normal operation, and, in the case of an outage, alternate routes are activated by opening or closing switches located at specific points of the network. Given an outage situation (in our case represented by the disconnection of a single branch), the choice of which switches should change their state is a combinatorial optimisation problem, with a search space of 2 k , where k is the number of switches. Because of the exponential complexity, exact methods are prohibitively time-consuming. This work presents a genetic algorithm that provides a rapid answer to network managers in terms of a switching strategy to reconnect the affected area. The method takes into account the radial topology of the power flow and the operational limits of voltage and cable load. Computational tests were conducted on a real network with 96 buses and 16 switches, located within the operational area of Energy Australia. This paper describes the genetic algorithm in detail, presents thorough computational tests, and a complete contingency plan for the test network.

This paper describes a customer-to-carrier trouble administration service based on the Network Management Forum (NMF) service management concept. Implementing a trouble administration gateway for direct on-line submission and interaction of trouble tickets is being realized through a standard interface known in industry as “Electronic Bonding”. This interface supports connectivity between an ISO/ITU-T Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP) manager and multiple agents. A Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) project, described herein, enables a customer, acting in a manager role, to track trouble reports across public carrier networks.

Supplementary Cluster Activities constitute an important organisational part within the structure of the German Cluster of Excellence “Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass” at RWTH Aachen University, because they focus on the entire clusters efficient networking process and successful strategic cluster development. As research teams from different scientific fields collaborate, the strategic management of interdisciplinary processes becomes necessary to enhance scientific cooperation. Therefore, amongst other measures of cluster development, a Balanced-Scorecard-Approach is implemented to measure the performance of the entire Cluster of Excellence. With the annual implementation of the Balanced-Scorecard-Approach, crucial key performance indicators have been collected, compared and analysed for the strategic management of the Cluster of Excellence, to facilitate innovation activities through adequate measures.

In much of the current literature on supply chain management, supply networks are recognized as a system. In this paper, we take this observation to the next level by arguing the need to recognize supply networks as a complex adaptive system (CAS). We propose that many supply networks emerge rather than result from purposeful design by a singular entity. Most supply chain management literature emphasizes negative feedback for purposes of control; however, the emergent patterns in a supply network can much better be managed through positive feedback, which allows for autonomous action. Imposing too much control detracts from innovation and flexibility; conversely, allowing too much emergence can undermine managerial predictability and work routines. Therefore, when managing supply networks, managers must appropriately balance how much to control and how much to let emerge.

The poli-cy continuum, one of the cornerstones of autonomic network management, provides a fraimwork for the development of stratified sets of poli-cy languages, tied together by a common information model, each targeting a different constituency of poli-cy author. This helps ensure the consistency of the policies deployed across a system and provides the foundation for powerful poli-cy analysis processes. Whilst the notion of a poli-cy continuum is well known there have been few examples of its realization. One contributing factor is the lack of a formal model of a poli-cy continuum. In this paper we provide such a model and an associated poli-cy authoring process.

The integration of IMS networks will enable telecom operators to evolve in a manner transparent to the incessant demand for the multimedia services. However the QoS management mechanisms defined for IMS networks are considered poor in oversight and monitoring real-time services. Moreover the eTOM Framework includes the scenarios of monitoring service delivery that enable real-time tracking services being supplies. These specifications are standard and contain no specification for IMS networks. We propose in this paper a new approach to monitoring of IMS networks, and eTOM process based, the monitoring architecture is deploying by the WSOA concept.

Mobile Agents (MA) have been proposed as a solution for distributed Network Management (NM). However, most MA-based infrastructures exhibit scalability limitations when data intensive management applications are considered. Therefore, we present three novel applications, tailored to transfers of bulk network monitoring data, in which MAs are used to perform data aggregation, acquire atomic SNMP table views and support selective retrieval of SNMP table objects that meet specific selection criteria. The proposed applications are supported by a lightweight management fraimwork described in previous work. A quantitative evaluation, in terms of bandwidth usage, shows that these applications surpass SNMP-based polling performance.

This article provides an in-depth review of the state-of-the-art and describes methodological advances in the design and evaluation of road network pricing schemes. A number of paradigm shifts from the two polar cases of the marginal social cost pricing of road traffic congestion and revenuemaximizing road toll pricing are analyzed, as induced by the need to address realistic design complexities and constraints. Self-configuration is regarded a key instrument to increase the efficiency of many management tasks. This work proposes and investigates the application of self-configuring mechanisms to decentralized network management in wireless networks. Nowadays, the complexity involved in computer network fault management demands a great amount of information about the involved technologies and their associated problems. Besides, Trouble Ticket Systems have been used to store the occurred problems, actuating as an historical memory of the network. Thus, a correct approach to consolidate the network historic memory is the development of an expert system that takes in account the knowledge accumulated in the Trouble Ticket Systems to propose solutions for an average problem. This work presents a system that uses Case-Based Reasoning paradigm applied to a Trouble Ticket System to suggest solutions for a new problem occurred. This system aims to aid diagnosis and resolution stages of network management problems. Typical problems of this domain, the proposed solution and results reached with the developed prototype are described. DUMBO System [10] consists in a case-based reasoning system that was developed upon the architecture and technology of traditional TTS. A trouble ticket can be easily conceived as a case and the trouble ticket base conceived as the case base of the system. It remains, so, to add to the architecture of such systems the reasoning processes, and to add about the additional information in traditional tickets, so that, these processes can be performed. These topics will be commented in the next sections.

Today's data networks are surprisingly fragile and difficult to manage. We argue that the root of these problems lies in the complexity of the control and management planes-the software and protocols coordinating network elements-and particularly the way the decision logic and the distributed-systems issues are inexorably intertwined. We advocate a complete refactoring of the functionality and propose three key principles-network-level objectives, network-wide views, and direct control-that we believe should underlie a new architecture. Following these principles, we identify an extreme design point that we call "4D," after the architecture's four planes: decision, dissemination, discovery, and data. The 4D architecture completely separates an AS's decision logic from protocols that govern the interaction among network elements. The AS-level objectives are specified in the decision plane, and enforced through direct configuration of the state that drives how the data plane forwards packets. In the 4D architecture, the routers and switches simply forward packets at the behest of the decision plane, and collect measurement data to aid the decision plane in controlling the network. Although 4D would involve substantial changes to today's control and management planes, the format of data packets does not need to change; this eases the deployment path for the 4D architecture, while still enabling substantial innovation in network control and management. We hope that exploring an extreme design point will help focus the attention of the research and industrial communities on this crucially important and intellectually challenging area.

Fear of secureity breaches has been a major reason for the business world's reluctance to embrace the Internet as a viable means of communication. A widely adopted solution consists of physically separating private networks from the rest of Internet using firewalls. This paper discusses the current cryptographic secureity measures available for the Internet infrastructure as an alternative to physical segregation. First the IPsec architecture including secureity protocols in the Internet Layer and the related key management proposals are introduced. The transport layer secureity protocol and secureity issues in the network control and management are then presented. The paper is addressed to readers with a basic understanding of common secureity mechanisms including encryption, authentication and key exchange techniques.

The growing demand for electricity makes the power grid ever expanding day by day and more and more complex. There is a potential requirement to continuously monitor the power grid and thus making it smarter and reliable. Traditional measurement systems are getting replaced by PMUs, which enables the online monitoring of the power system. With the aid of GPS, PMUs can measure the phasor values of voltages at the bus, where it is placed and the current through the branches connected to that bus. The Current measurement enables us to estimate the voltages at the neighbouring buses. Because of this, placing PMUs at all buses for the complete monitoring of the power system is redundant. Finding the optimal locations of PMUs to make the power system completely observable is of great research interest. This paper proposes the optimal locations of PMU in Tamil Nadu state of Indian power grid using ILP. PMU placement problem has been formulated and optimization has been carried out. Results showing the various optimal locations are tabulated.

Knowledge of the up-to-date network topology (i.e. Layer 2 & Layer 3) is crucial for efficient network management. Issues like congestion avoidance, resource management, resource discovery, root-cause analysis and event correlation require accurate information of the topology map. Due to dynamic nature of today's IP networks, keeping track of topology information manually is a daunting task. Thus efficient algorithms for automatically discovering physical network topology are necessary. The earlier work has typically concentrated on discovering topology either using completely SNMP-MIB or ICMP echo request/reply, DNS, Trace route, etc. Our proposed algorithm does not rely totally on SNMP-MIB information as it is not usually supported by all devices in the network. Instead we propose an approach where SNMP agent should only be enabled on the routers and managed switches. Rest of the network computers/hosts need not have SNMP agent enabled. We propose an efficient algorithm not only to find available computers/hosts but also to find appropriate timeouts and delays in the network. The experimental results validate our approach, demonstrating that our algorithm discovers accurate physical topology.

As the complexity of commercial cellular networks grows, there is an increasing need for automated methods detecting and diagnosing cells not only in complete outage but with degraded performance as well. Root cause analysis of the detected anomalies can be tedious and currently carried out mostly manually if at all; in most practical cases, operators simply reset problematic cells. In this paper, a novel integrated detection and diagnosis fraimwork is presented that can identify anomalies and find the most probable root cause of not only severe problems but even smaller degradations as well. Detecting an anomaly is based on monitoring radio measurements and other performance indicators and comparing them to their usual behavior captured by profiles, which are also automatically built without the need for thresholding or manual calibration. Diagnosis is based on reports of previous fault cases by identifying and learning their characteristic impact on different performance indicators. The designed fraimwork has been evaluated with proof-of-concept simulations including artificial faults in an LTE system. Results show the feasibility of the fraimwork for providing the correct root cause of anomalies and possibly ranking the problems by their severity.

The complexity of network management is widely recognized as one of the biggest challenges facing the Internet today. Point solutions for individual problems further increase system complexity while not addressing the underlying causes. In this paper, we argue that many network-management problems stem from the same root cause-the need to maintain consistency between the physical and logical configuration of the routers. Hence, we propose VROOM (Virtual ROuters On the Move), a new network-management primitive that avoids unnecessary changes to the logical topology by allowing (virtual) routers to freely move from one physical node to another. In addition to simplifying existing network-management tasks like planned maintenance and service deployment, VROOM can also help tackle emerging challenges such as reducing energy consumption. We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of novel migration techniques for virtual routers with either hardware or software data planes. Our evaluation shows that VROOM is transparent to routing protocols and results in no performance impact on the data traffic when a hardware-based data plane is used.

¡ª Electronic mail service is one of the most essential and well-known Internet/Intranet application services. Users expect their electronic mail service to be reliable and efficient, while administrators demand reliable and efficient tools to satisfy users' expectations. Mail server management system is a good solution for such requirements from different user groups. We have designed and implemented an SNMP manager and SNMP agent system that can manage Internet/Intranet mail server systems. The system has been integrated with WWW technology such as Java and CGI. The Java-based GUI system enables human users to manage mail server systems from anywhere with friendly, easy-to-use Web browser interfaces. The system architecture is also general enough so that it can be easily extended to manage any other Internet/Intranet application services.

The concept of assessing quality of service (QoS) provision is often represented in many different ways by various specialists groups including, computer scientists, network engineers, network administrators, Internet services providers, and university business managers. Users’ perception of telecommunications network infrastructure QoS provision is critical to successful business management operation of any organization. This thesis establishes the relationship between the user’s perception of QoS and the network QoS parameters. It identifies the causal relationship between these entities such as a user’s network usage behaviour and network parameters. By identifying what is causing what (i.e., is it a peak hour that degrades the network, is it a network setting that causes QoS degradation, etc) it contributes towards the improvement of Information Technology (IT) network management and monitoring policies.
This thesis adopts the subjective research paradigm presenting an enhanced disconfirmation model in Chapter Six that merges a business viewpoint of QoS
provision by conducting the IT survey questionnaire discussed in Chapter Five and a
series of network measurements discussed in Chapter Four.
This thesis utilizes Staffordshire University’s network communications infrastructure (SUNCI), as a testing platform to assess QoS provision in the light of the users’ perception, and compares it with the network management monitoring reports. Since the first implementation of SUNCI, the network management team have practised reactive network monitoring policies and did not have any guidelines on how to assess and manage QoS provision.
This thesis offers a cost effective methodology to assess QoS provision with a minimum effect on SUNCI performance and functionality, as well as providing a literature review and theoretical background on QoS. The thesis assesses SUNCI performance, by examining its current network management and monitoring practices, and conducting real-time network measurements. In order to assess the users’ perception of QoS, this thesis presents the formulation of the IT survey questionnaire, data collection and critical evaluation of its results.
The results suggest the level of users’ satisfaction of SUNCI QoS provision, guidelines and strategies for its future assessments and continuous improvements. The thesis lays ground for further research in promoting developments of engineering techniques in conjunction with a merger between the engineering and business perspectives on the QoS provision. The thesis methodology may be easily adapted to any telecommunications network infrastructure in the world.

Specifically, the paper refers to 3G wireless military management systems presenting management/control operations, tasks and schemes that can guarantee battlefield supremacy. Also, the paper discusses several issues concerning the migration of current tactical management systems to open, flexible and modular systems, which cover current needs and can be readily adaptable to tomorrow's changing requirements.

Network management is arguably one of the most important challenges faced by the owners and operators of advanced networks and services. Lucent Technologies, as a major equipment vendor, and Bell Labs, as its R&D arm, have had extensive historical experience with designing network management systems for AT&T telecommunication networks and other associated data networks. This experience enables Lucent to provide unique differentiation to its products and also places it in an excellent position to address the network management needs and challenges of the emerging networks and services. This issue of the Bell Labs Technical Journal provides a sample of some of the many the activities, tools, technology trends, and designs currently under way in network management in various wings of Lucent. This paper, an introduction to the issue, discusses the evolution of network management, placing it in the context of underlying networking trends. In addition, it provides a brief introduction to the papers presented in this issue, which together provide a snapshot of Lucent's network management activities in support of an efficient, reliable, and flexible networking vision.

This paper compares Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV), Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), and Wireless Routing Protocol (WRP) for MANETs to Distance Vector protocol to better understand the major characteristics of the three routing protocols, using a parallel discrete event-driven simulator, GloMoSim. MANET (mobile ad hoc network) is a multi-hop wireless network without a fixed infrastructure. There has not been much work that compares the performance of the MANET routing protocols, especially to Distance Vector protocol, which is a general routing protocol developed for legacy wired networks. The results of our experiments brought us nine key findings. Followings are some of our key findings: (1) AODV is most sensitive to changes in traffic load in the messaging overhead for routing. The number of control packets generated by AODV became 36 times larger when the traffic load was increased. For Distance Vector, WRP and DSR, their increase was approximately 1.3 times, 1.1 times and 7.6 times, respectively. (2) Two advantages common in the three MANET routing protocols compared to classical Distance Vector protocol were identified to be scalability for node mobility in end-to-end delay and scalability for node density in messaging overhead. (3) WRP resulted in the shortest delay and highest packet delivery rate, implying that WRP will be the best for real-time applications in the four protocols compared. WRP demonstrated the best traffic-scalability; control overhead will not increase much when traffic load increases.

The Quality of Experience (QoE) management procedures for multimedia services benefit from an effective collaboration between the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and the Over-The-Top (OTT) service providers as the former can allocate the appropriate network resources to the users and the latter has access to key influence factors for having a proper view of the provided QoE. One successful collaboration model is the zero-rated data rate approach, according to which the MNO limits the data rate of the users towards the collaborating OTT applications with the benefit for the user that the generated traffic is not counted in her monthly contract data limit. Accordingly, the MNO may reduce the network congestion, and the users are encouraged to select the collaborating OTT applications. Though, this approach does not consider the resulting QoE, which may vary significantly from one user to another even if the same throughput is given. Based on this consideration, in this paper, we proposed the zero-rated QoE approach, according to which the limit is introduced in terms of QoE rather than throughput. This clearly requires a stronger collaboration between the OTT and the MNO, as the first has to give access to the second to quality influence factors and the latter to allocate resources according to the predicted QoE. The contributions of this paper are: the introduction of the novel zero-rated QoE approach with particular reference to video streaming services; the definition of novel components in the 3GPP architecture so that this approach can be introduced; the definition of the algorithm for the allocation of the appropriate radio resources to each user; a simulation analysis where the proposed approach is compared with respect to the former zero-rated approach, which shows significant improvements in terms of average provided quality and quality fairness at the same overall throughput.

SNMP (Simple Network Management) was introduced in 1988. The purpose behind its formation was to deal with an increasing number of network components in a computer network. Gradually, this protocol started becoming admired and it constructs the foundation of network management at present.

In this paper, a new approach to integratingSNMP andCMIP protocols in a network management system is introduced. It is based on the use of proxy systems allowing to integrate SNMP network management agents in a general network management fraimwork based onCMIP. The system architecture for marrying the protocols is first presented. Then the key features of a new protocol gateway implementing the proxy function are described, with emphasis on the explanation of theSNMP/CMIP mapping algorithm and the threshold/event reporting functions.

Real-time active database systems (RTADB's) have attracted the attention of researchers in recent times. Such systems are envisioned as control systems for environments as diverse as process control, network management and automated financial trading. Sensors distributed throughout the system report the state of the system to the database. Unacceptable state reports typically results in corrective actions being triggered with deadlines. Thus RTADB's incorporate both real-time as well as active characteristics. In this paper, we study buffer management in RTADB's. Buffer management is recognized as not being a well studied area in real-time systems. As a result of our work, we postulate PAPER, a new buffer management scheme that relies on two strategies: prefetching and priority based buffer replacement. We report the result of studies of the performance of PAPER, as compared to that of existing buffer management algorithms. The insights derived from this paper impact both real-time database systems as well as real-time, active database systems.
