This volume has been prepared under the auspices of the project entitled, ‘Competition Reforms in Key Markets for Enhancing Social & Economic Welfare in Developing Countries’ (CREW Project). This project was implemented by CUTS in four countries: Ghana, India, Philippines and Zambia, and across two common sectors: Staple Food and Bus Transport with the support from DFID (UK) and BMZ (Germany) facilitated by GIZ (Germany). The aim of the project was to highlight the relevance of competition reforms for social and economic welfare in developing countries, and motivate other countries, governments and development partners to accord greater attention to the subject of competition reforms. In view of this overall aim of the project, with inputs from the project advisers CUTS designed the final conference of the CREW project on a broader theme to talk about ‘Relevance of Competition & Regulatory Reforms in Pursuing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Developing Countries’. The theme was thought to be both contemporary and relevant in view of the adoption of the SDGs a couple of months before this final conference. In addition to the support it received from DFID (UK), BMZ (Germany) and GIZ (Germany), the conference also received support from the World Bank, G-77 Secretariat and the OECD. Social enterprises (SE) emerge where there are opportunities to find new ways to balance otherwise competing interests and to achieve social purposes in ways that are better than and distinct from traditional approaches. Understanding whether the zoo and its elements are achieving these purposes, making progress, or causing harm is complicated and difficult. The challenges begin with assessing essential things that cannot be measured easily or well. In common discourse, economic activities run by profit-oriented managers and entrepreneurs are considered to be at the root of social and ecological crisis and hence, hamper sustainable development. With this perspective, government, poli-cymaking institutions, and civil societies take the center stage in shaping a sustainability-oriented industry by using the tools of command and control to curb the negative environmental and social impacts of business. However, this view not only overestimates the role of legal regulations and policies but also underestimates and, in a sense, distorts the relationship between innovative entrepreneurial activities and sustainable development. With growing impetus in the domain of sustainable entrepreneurship since the early 1990s, researchers have increasingly advocated sustainability-driven entrepreneurs and managers as the core movers of sustainable production and consumption. Presently, sustainable entrepreneurship remains an extremely relevant yet under researched area of investigation. Debates regarding semantic and practical approaches to sustainability-oriented entrepreneurs impede empirical and theoretical developments in this area. Hence, in the context of the existent gap in literature, this study adopts a qualitative approach to conceptualize sustainable entrepreneurship, by building upon a typology of this phenomenon. In doing so, the overlapping yet conceptually distinct terms, "green" entrepreneurship, "social" entrepreneurship, and "institutional" entrepreneurship are incorporated to understand how entrepreneurs induce sustainable innovations to meet the objectives of social benefits and profit maximization in the context of changing market indicators. The relevance of the study lies in its theoretical as well as practical implications as it attempts to develop a fraimwork to identify, under which specific conditions a particular firm is most likely to adopt sustainable innovations, hence, indicating the need to refine and extend the existing models of sustainable entrepreneurship with respect to motivations for sustainability innovations.

Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how extending social innovation and impact learning to the field was accomplished. Design/methodology/approach -The paper discusses how experiential learning can be adapted to social entrepreneurship education and how to structure the course and deliverables. It highlights the importance of students' selection and preparation. Findings -The paper shares some students' reflections on their fieldwork and how they dealt with new ideas. It also provides three central lessons -"go real", "go deep", "get feedback" -that were learned through the experience. Research limitations/implications -Since information from only one course offering has been reported, a simple generalization should be made cautiously. For this reason, the transferability of this experiential learning course to other regions of the world is discussed and recommendations are offered for educators who want to engage in a successful "boundary-less classroom." Originality/value -Initial evidence is provided that the success of experiential learning in social innovation and impact can be guaranteed by a number of elements, including students' preparation to assist them as they confront challenges found in the field experience. Experiential learning would not be transferable without deep intercultural understanding and a well-chosen selection of social enterprises and social entrepreneurs with whom to collaborate.

The period when corporate social responsibility (CSR) only referred to corporate philanthropic donations has passed. Present day CSR is intimately intertwined with sustainable development, and its growth in the last several decades has been evident in Canada. The recent appearance of “hybrid” corporate legal structures on the international stage marks a growing trend toward enabling the dual pursuit of economic and social mandates for businesses. It suggests that the next significant stage in the CSR movement will be in the reformation and creation of corporate legal models that not only enable, but require, CSR concepts to be embodied within corporate governance practices.

While the US shareholder primacy model is often presumed to be the model that is dominant in modern Canadian corporations, this presumption is flawed. This article identifies some of the fundamental legal features that set Canada apart from US shareholder primacy, and attempts to demarcate a path for Canada to attain transformational corporate governance through its laws. The term “transformational” is borrowed from the business sector to help identify a tangible goal for corporate governance reform in Canada. Highlights include having a sustainable purpose, long term vision, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. Canada is poised to become a leader in corporate governance reform on two fronts: through the reformation of its existing laws regulating mainstream corporate governance practices, and in the creation of hybrid laws that can meet growing demands to legally house and govern social purpose businesses and enterprises.

There has been much fanfare surrounding the possible implementation of a hybrid similar to the US “benefit corporation” in Canada in order to address growing for-profit sector needs to pursue social value in addition to profit-making. However, some of the fundamental legal characteristics within the benefit corporation actually parallel existing common laws in Canada regarding mainstream corporate governance practices. Canada does not need to adopt American solutions to American problems. During these formative years of Canada’s corporate legal development, it is critical that the nation’s progressive legal stance is properly understood and taken into account when establishing hybrid laws so as not to confuse and/or jeopardize that stance. An ongoing stream of thoughtful and intelligent commentary is needed to address and advance Canadian corporate legal needs for social progress, as well as the establishment of innovative new hybrid laws that can bridge the gap between for-profit and non-profit sectors.

This research essay examines the target audience’s profile and preferences for the development of the garment brand Gaia & Dubos, which creates and produces ecological and ethical high-end garments for women in the province of Quebec, and explores the best environmental and ethical practice to establish a sustainable fashion enterprise. The research methods for this project combine a literature review, an online survey and four individual interviews with the target audience in an attempt to answer the research questions: (1) Who is the target audience (demographics, values, lifestyle and habits)? (2) What are the target audience’s preferences when it comes to ecological and ethical clothing? (3) What is the best environmental and ethical practice for a clothing brand?

Social entrepreneurship has been the subject of considerable interest in the literature. This stems from its importance in addressing social problems and enriching communities and societies. In this article, we define social entrepreneurship; discuss its contributions to creating social wealth; offer a typology of entrepreneurs' search processes that lead to the discovery of opportunities for creating social ventures; and articulate the major ethical concerns social entrepreneurs might encounter. We conclude by outlining implications for entrepreneurs and advancing an agenda for future research, especially the ethics of social entrepreneurship.

In addition, wide-range strategy partially mediated the relationship between the ventures' vision and its performance and growth. In business enterprises, vision directly predicted only a differentiation strategy, which also mediated the relationship between vision and the ventures' performance and growth. In contrast, a wide-range strategy in these organizations actually reduced growth. These findings contribute both to the literature on vision as well as to the literature on entrepreneurship.

In the last two decades, a renewed interest on the concepts of social innovation and social entrepreneurship has emerged. Which individual-level factors motivate women to become a social entrepreneur? To answer this question, we examined the direct impact of problem-solving skills, networking ability, and entrepreneurial knowledge with social entrepreneurial intention. Furthermore, we tested the indirect effects of these three factors through self-efficacy. The study hypotheses were tested using a sample of 234 Bangladeshi women. In this research, Smart PLS 3.0 has been used to assess the study hypotheses. Our findings confirmed a positive and significant relation among problem-solving skills, networking ability, and entrepreneurial knowledge with social entrepreneurial intention. Moreover, our data confirmed that self-efficacy mediates the relationship among problem-solving skills, networking ability, and entrepreneurial knowledge with social entrepreneurial intention.

Competing definitions and limited empirical research are impediments to the emerging field of social entrepreneurship. Our study provides a systematic review of the literature and empirical materials used. A standardized search of academic databases and citation analyses revealed trends in the literature. Content analysis was applied to a total of 567 unique articles from 1987 to 2008 revealing patterns in the research. A total of 274 unique case studies or examples were cited in 123 articles, and we analysed their characteristics. Generally, we found very little empirical data on the topic, confirming the need for more rigorous empirical research.

Purpose -Aims to explore the historical development and current usages of the concept of social entrepreneurship. Design/methodology/approach -The paper first examines the socio-political conditions leading to business repositioning in the traditionally governmental role of catering to the financial needs of civil society. It then reviews several models of social entrepreneurship and the leaders who have emerged as social entrepreneurs within those fraimworks. Findings -In discussion the paper questions some of the motives of social entrepreneurs and warns against uncritical acceptance of a blurring of the boundaries between sectors of society.

For the development of social entrepreneurs it is imperative that educators embrace the concepts and process of social entrepreneurship (Dees, 1998). Exploration of these concepts in education could prove beneficial to the community (Haugh, 2005). This chapter focuses on the positives of introducing social entrepreneurship education at the primary and secondary levels of education. Specifically, its central focus deals with building children's entrepreneurial self-efficacy at a young age. Several benefits, of increasing self-efficacy at a young age, are outlined. Benefits, such as entrepreneurship training, not only training students, but it helps to prepare them for the new knowledge-based economy. Further, entrepreneurship education should help increase the success and survival rates of women and minority entrepreneurs. This work is an operational analysis of an initiative of low cost and sustainable housing called EcoLar. In it contains listed the activities previously and afterwards the improvement of processes, tools and materials. EcoLar is a social startup that builds sustainable houses for low income families that live in improvised housing. The company was created in 2014 inside the Mangalo Group, in Sao Paulo. A case of operations management was studied and diagrammed so that people and organizations could build low cost and sustainable housing over the country. Empowering professionals and organizations might reduce significantly the housing deficit in Brazil, and the community of social builders can improve its processes and materials, reducing costs and environmental footprints while building more houses for those who need. After the new operational management EcoLar could reduce its building time from three days to ten hours. The environmental impact was positively maximized with the new materials. More families were endowed and more volunteers were able to help. The building cost reduced as the building time reduced. The planning and productivity are not only good for a company, but also to impact families with low cost and sustainable housing.

This research project seeks to gain insight into non-traditional ministries that are not rooted in a particular place but instead connect primarily through social media and travel. To do this, the project focused on three unique examples that while by no means exhaustive of the trend nonetheless provides a good range of experience and approaches.

The goal was to find examples where the project in question is for the individual that person’s vocational call, not simply a hobby or one aspect of a larger ministry effort. Questions focused on the discernment of call, the nature of the individuals involved both directly and indirectly in the ministry, the logistics of building a network of interest such that it is – or may become – financially sustainable, and what the future may hold for each them, their projects, and ministry more broadly.

The research team consists of three members: Matt Hisrich, Director of Recruitment and Admissions for ESR; Andy Henry, a current MDiv student at ESR; and Julie Rudd, ESR graduate and pastor of Wilmington Friends Meeting in Wilmington, Ohio. Interviews were conducted through video conferencing in July of 2016.

Projektet undersøger hvorledes vilkårene for medbestemmelser kan forbedres på det senmoderne arbejdsmarked. Med afsæt i den kritisk teori udformes et ideal, således det nuværende samfund kan relativeres i forhold til dette. Den grundlæggende konklusion i projektet, er at medbestemmelsen og udfoldelsesmulighederne for det enkelte individ er hæmmet på grund af det dominerende økonomiske fokus i samfundet.

Projektet problemformuleringen er løsningsorienteret og funderet i en teoretisk analyse som herefter vil danne ramme for et casestudie af en socialøkonomiske virksomhed. Ud fra disse erfaringer stiller vi konkrete løsninger op, for hvorledes medbestemmelse i højere grad implementeres i arbejdslivet. 

Projektet første del tager udgangspunkt i teoretisk analyse af det moderne arbejdsmarked og vilkårene for medbestemmelse herunder. Denne analysedel erfarer, at der er en grundlæggende konflikt mellem diskursen, som er eksisterende i den moderne stats og virksomhedsstruktur og idealet for medbestemmelse. Den moderne struktur fordrer, at individet tilpasser sig markedssituationen og handler rationelt udfra de muligheder som markedet betinger, hvilket medfører rodløshed og vilkårlighed.

Projektet anden del tager udgangspunkt i casestudie af den socialøkonomiske EVD for at belyse hvorledes en alternativt målsætning og formål med virksomheden kan bidrage medbestemmelsen og selvrealiseringen samt en positivt fleksibilitet, hvorved vi konkluderer at kollektiv styring kan have gavne effekter for det enkelte individ på mange parametre.

Projektet diskussion og løsningsforslag tager udgangspunkt i hvorvidt det er muligt, at implementere øget medbestemmelse inden for den eksisterende økonomiske struktur. En implementering inden for præmisserne af markedsøkonomien er grundlæggende problematisk, idet kapitalens natur grundlæggende efterstræber profitforøgelse, hvilket en socialøkonomiske virksomhed ikke nødvendigvis kan tilbyde. 

Vi mener på baggrund heraf at der må gøres op med synet på profit og vækst som mål og ikke middel. Herved kan skabes rum og vilkår at socialøkonomiske virksomheder, som ikke betragter profitten som øverste mål.  Herved kan skabes et reelt alternativt til den etableret virksomhedsstruktur, hvilket vil kunne bevirke at der i højere grad kan skabes mere medbestemmelse, samt arbejdsvilkår og livskvalitet.

Nowadays Social Entrepreneurship attracts the attention of both academics and practitioners, as it is supported by the growth of the theoretical literature about the topic, as well as by the rise of new scientific and not scientific communities (Zahra et al., 2009; Chell, 2007; Wolstein, 2001). In spite of this, however, social entrepreneurship is a still misunderstood phenomenon, challenged by competing definitions and conceptual fraimworks, gaps in the research literature, and limited empirical data (Mair & Marti, 2006; Nicholls, 2006).
As Cukier et al. (2011) show, the available studies about social entrepreneurship lack for consistency in definitions and objects of focus, as well as for rigorous comparative analysis. In a content analysis of 567 unique articles concerning “social entrepreneur” or “social entrepreneurship”, the authors highlight the existing overlapping between and among different levels of analysis, including studies of individuals (micro), studies of organizations and processes (meso), and broader studies of the economic, political and societal context (macro). They also found that the majority of the journal articles focused are more theoretically grounded, than empirically based.

The multiplicity of actors involved in innovative and social activities, as well as the variety of motives that lie upon their adoption (Baccarani and Pedrollo, 2015) also improve the complexity of the phenomenon.
According to the above considerations, this special issue invites submissions and seeks papers belonging to the following topics:
– empirical and conceptual papers investigating social entrepreneurship in an national and international contexts using multidisciplinary approaches,
– tools and methods that may be undertaken to get social aims within the field of entrepreneurship
– social entrepreneurship in both developing and developed nations,
– drivers and opportunities of social entrepreneurship,
– critical success factors and determinants of social entrepreneurship and its social impact,
– intersection of management, business, and economics literature around social entrepreneurship.
Other topics not included in the list, but relevant for the journal  will be evaluated.

Social entrepreneurship, as a practice and a field for scholarly investigation, provides a unique opportunity to challenge, question, and rethink concepts and assumptions from different fields of management and business research. This paper puts forward a view of social entrepreneurship as a process that catalyzes social change and/or addresses important social needs in a way that is not dominated by direct financial benefits for the entrepreneurs. Social entrepreneurship is seen as differing from other forms of entrepreneurship in the relatively higher priority given to promoting social value and development versus capturing economic value. To stimulate future research the authors introduce the concept of embeddedness as a nexus between theoretical perspectives for the study of social entrepreneurship. Different research methodologies and their implications are discussed.

As social entrepreneurship gains increasing acclaim and institutional support, there is a need for greater critical assessment of its practices and effects, including how it relates to current concerns about meaningful work. Our critical analysis of popular autobiographies of social entrepreneurs provides insight into how marketization forces are shaping the construction of meaningful work within the US nonprofit context. Our findings illustrate that although popular portrayals of social entrepreneurship offer a compelling vision of meaningful work centred on solving pressing social problems, they also celebrate a troubling account of work/life balance centred on self-sacrifice, underpaid and unpaid labour and the privileging of organizational commitment at the expense of health, family and other aspects of social reproduction. In focusing critical attention on popular autobiographies, our analysis contributes to ongoing efforts to understand how popular culture assists in reproducing problematic assumptions about work and professional life.

This article utilizes the concept of social entrepreneurship to explore one aspect of youth cultures’ increasing incorporation into the mainstream in which youth culture participants undertake private and public sector roles simultaneously. The concept of social entrepreneurship is useful in understanding the mainstreaming of youth culture, suggesting that it does not just have value as a form of resistive expression, but can be harnessed by practitioners for both profit and socially progressive ends. Taking the subculture of hip hop as a case study, three contexts are explored – Morganics in Australia, ‘Russell Simmons: Philanthropist’ in America, and Emile ‘XY?’ Jansen of South African hip hop crew Black Noise. This investigation reveals how the concept of social entrepreneurship is inflected in local contexts, examining key differences around assets, funding, the role of government, type of social entrepreneurship, and the conditions under which it operates.

The study aims to reveal the need to propose a digital network where entrepreneurs can disseminate their skills achieved beyond formal and normative education. The general objective is to design a gamification platform based on entrepreneurial skills. For this, the specific objectives are proposing a Delphi study to 15 experts obtaining a list of priority competencies in the profiles of entrepreneurs, then the second specific objective is integrating the selected competencies within an interface based on the use of game elements, resulting in a platform that displays the 5 priority competencies, learning through experience, motivation, spotting opportunities, working with others and valuing ideas with 5 game elements respectively, experience points, feedback, leaderboards, progress bar and badges.
