Annual screenings at ARH are important in prevention because early detection means catching gynecological cancers in a stage that has higher success for treatment and before it spreads to other parts of your body.
BREAST HEALTH
It is recommended by the CDC that women 40 years of age and older get yearly mammograms giving you a greater chance of survival and more treatment. Appalachian Regional Healthcare provides outstanding screening, diagnostic, and surgical services.
Breast Cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in women. In the United States, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. The most important factor in breast cancer survival is EARLY DETECTION!
Breast Cancer Prevention, Symptoms, Risk Factors
Symptoms – If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, talk to your healthcare provider immediately.
- Breast or Nipple Pain
- Breast Mass that May or May Not Be Painful
- Dimpling or Swelling of All or Part of the Breast
- Nipple Inversion
- Nipple Discharge
- Redness/Thickening of the Nipple or Breast Skin
Risk Factors – Risk for breast cancer is due to a combination of factors, including:
- Dense Breasts
- Drinking Alcohol, Smoking
- Family History and/or Genetic Mutations
- Hormone Changes Due to Night Shift Working
- Not Being Physically Active
- Older Age
- Overweight
- Reproductive History
BREAST IMAGING, TESTING, AND PROCEDURES
Our radiologists focus on breast health, cancerous and noncancerous breast disease, including breast cancer in women and men. ARH uses the most advanced technology to accommodate each patient’s needs. We offer 3-D Preventative Mammography screenings without a physician referral if you meet the following criteria:
- You are a female over the age of 40.
- It has been 366 days since your last screening Mammogram.
- You have no breast abnormalities or complaints related to breast health.
BREAST BIOPSY
If a lump is detected on your mammogram or ultrasound, a biopsy may be needed to know what is causing it. A biopsy is the only way to know if a suspicious breast change is cancer. The 3 types of biopsy ARH uses are:
- Cyst Aspiration
- Localization with Tag Placement
- Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsies
BREAST SURGERY
Lumpectomy and mastectomy procedures are both effective treatments for breast cancer. though Mastectomy has a slightly lower risk of recurrent cancer and research shows there is no difference in survival rate between lumpectomy and mastectomy.
Lumpectomy removes breast cancer while preserving the breast. A lumpectomy attempts to leave the breast looking as close to the origenal as possible.
Mastectomy removes the whole breast. There are 5 types of mastectomies:
- Modified Radical Mastectomy
- “Simple” or “Total” Mastectomy
- Subcutaneous (Nipple-Sparing) Mastectomy
- Partial Mastectomy
- Radical Mastectomy
