Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College football team put together its best offensive effort of the season, but in the end, it wasn't enough as the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots knocked off the Yeomen 46-21 on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
Inspired by the return of starting quarterback
Drew Nye, the Yeomen offense racked up 423 yards and 27 first downs, running 91 plays, which is just four shy of a school record. Nye finished 23-of-53 for 295 yards and three touchdowns to accompany one interception. The Clinton, Connecticut, native also added 53 yards on the ground in the loss. It was a career day for sophomore
Colten Danel who rushed for 65 yards on 19 carries to go along with 10 catches for 93 yards receiving.
Senior
Evan Smith-Rooks hauled in nine passes for 75 yards and a score, while
Connor Steele and
Jordan Fishback combined for 109 yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions.
The Scots took back the opening kickoff for a touchdown and led 14-0 before the Yeomen got on the board early in the second quarter when Fishback had a 26-yard catch-and-run touchdown to cap off a 10-play, 71-yard drive for the Yeomen.
Brazos Gadler, who had the game's opening touchdown, responded for the Scots by grabbing two long-distance touchdown passes to make it a 33-7 Wooster lead at the half.
Oberlin would get back to within three scores with 3:58 left in the third quarter when Fishback escaped free from 17 yards out to finish off a 7-play, 64-yard march by the Yeomen. Unfortunately, the Scots were gifted excellent field position on the ensuing kickoff and cashed in a quick 4-play, 48-yard drive with Gadler's fourth touchdown of the day.
After another Wooster score, Oberlin kept fighting till the end, adding a touchdown on a 4-yard slant to Smith-Rooks that capped off an impressive 15-play, 75-yard drive that took 7:01 off the clock.
Hunter Green led the defense with 12 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss.
Gavi Genger had two TFL's and
Nathaniel Castro also forced a fumble for the Yeomen.
Oberlin is back in action next Saturday at Wittenberg University. The opening kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
