The subject of mandating rain barrels on new developments

was brought forward to council on Jan. 21.
The proposed amendment to the Land Use Bylaw would see
the addition of rain barrels on new residential lots become mandatory.
Cancorp Property Group, developers of Wildflower Ranch, and
Ovation Homes wrote letters of opposition to the amendment.
Curtis Palmer, president of Ovation Homes, was on hand for
the public hearing and spoke about his concerns, which included
the possible risk they pose to the foundation if not installed properly and the freezing of the water in the barrels during the winter.
As a builder we are required to grade each home with positive
drainage away from the foundation, said Palmer.
It is the homeowners responsibility to maintain those grades
after possession, including correcting any settlement. Water in
basements and foundation issues caused by water will not be
warrantied by the builder or the third party warranty provider if
it is determined those grades have not been maintained.
He continued on to say that in his experience with homeowners today, everyones time is valuable and they are looking for low
maintenance in everything they do and he would suggest that the
majority of homeowners wouldnt want a rain barrel, but admits
to not asking them either.
Werner Fischer, with the planning and development department for the town, said that the development permit and building
permit processes try to ensure that positive drainage is provided
away from the building without impacting adjacent properties.
In areas of town where we do not have storm sewer were
compelled to use streets and the lanes because they are an essential part of the overall drainage for the town, said Fischer.
There is an issue with storm water management in certain areas of the town. Many areas downtown, for example, dont have
storm sewer; all of the new areas do have storm water drainage,
however.
I believe certainly in some of areas of the town, especially in
those areas where we dont have storm sewers, rain barrels are
going to be required and were going to have to figure out how
to make them work, said Fischer.
Councillor Rocky Blokland questioned if it will really make that
much of a difference, especially since those barrels will still need
to be emptied, and will likely be drained onto peoples lawns if
they are not used for gardening, or other uses.
Youre reducing the rate of release, thats what this is all about,
said Fischer.
In Fischers opinion making rain barrels mandatory is about
water conservation, stormwater management and water table
management. There are cases where everything has been done
right on a property, and suddenly 20 years later they have water
issues that werent there before due to rising water tables. He
said typically one neighbour adding a sump pump resolves the
situation, but there are often other ways to deal with it. In some
cases extending the downspout further away from the house has
helped some people mitigate the problem.

Clark optimistic about Albertas future

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Alberta Party leader Greg Clark made a stop in Strathmore
on Jan. 26 at the Wheatland Lodge to talk to citizens about
his vision for Alberta.
There is a provincial election coming up pretty quickly,
so Im getting out and around the province, as I have since
I became leader about a year and a half ago, and talking to
people, said Clark. Its a really interesting time in Alberta
politics. I think what Im hearing from the people here in
Strathmore, is that a lot people feel they dont have a political home, after the big Wildrose crossing they felt betrayed.
The Alberta Partys initiative is to provide a better way for
the citizens of the province to have their input in what the
government should be doing to make it a better place.
Were a party of Albertans, were not left or right, that has
a strong Alberta sense that has good physical discipline, but
we also look out for each other, said Clark. Were hearing
about the doom and gloom and (were) going to hear about
a lot of negativity as we get into this election. Were in a
tough spot with oil prices, but Im really optimistic about the
future of the province.
Clark believes this province will climb to its potential and
will be even stronger for years to come.
I think Alberta has some entrepreneurial spirit, said
Clark. Im entrepreneur myself and built a business because
I didnt see a company that fit my values. Thats what we do
in Alberta is we build, and thats something I dont see from
any party out there.
He admits the major issue that Alberta will face is efficiency, but says that it will become better if everyone works
together.

Alberta Party leader Greg Clark (l) chats with Thelma McNeill at the Wheatland Lodge on Jan. 26 about Albertas future.

Justin Seward Photo

It terms of the big issues, we need to focus on efficiency

first, making sure were getting the most out of every dollar they spend and that includes the taxes the government
owes, said Clark.
The party is in the process of building up in hopes of becoming the dominant party of this province.
Ive been the leader for about a year and half. We ran candidates in the by-elections here in the fall, finished a strong
second to Calgary-Elbow. (We are) very confident in what
were going to see in this election. Were going to elect Alberta Party MLAs, said Clark. Once we elect MLAs, were
going to earn the trust of Albertans. What I think the Alberta
Party has to offer is not just a better opposition, but a party
that can be a better government.

Christmas Park gets a boost from town

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Each year the hardworking organizers and volunteers of the Celebration of
Lights Christmas Park put in hundreds
of hours preparing the light displays,
hosting events, and then taking everything back down again in January.
On Jan. 21 Rose Hamrlik and Dennis
McNeill made a presentation to Strathmore town council, outlining what they
do each year and requesting funding
for the 2015-16 season.
Our park basically works on donations and whatever we can raise through
our fundraising efforts throughout the
year, said Hamrlik.
Approximately 35,000 people enjoyed the park in 2014 and early 2015,
coming from across the province and
around the world.
We work under the umbrella of the
Agricultural Society, we use the baseball facility out at the grounds. Over the
last seven years we are coming to an
age where the last of our incandescent
rope lights and a lot of our incandes-

cent lights that were first put up have

now failed, and are failing quite regularly, said McNeill.
Over the past year or so, work has
begun to rebuild a lot of the displays,
and the next project to tackle is the
candy cane alley.
The Strathmore Lions, the naming
sponsor, have been fantastic in helping
raise funds, but with the lights getting
older McNeill said they are looking at
some expensive replacements.
We have purchased whatever we
can for product from Boxing Day sales
and wherever we can to keep our costs
down. All of our expenses are basically
for product and our services, said McNeill.
Im just amazed at the job you do,
said Councillor Bob Sobol.
I visited a couple times and I was
just so impressed with the quality and
the attitude of your volunteers, what
they are doing for our town. You cant
even count what they are doing for the
town, it just puts us in such a great
light. People enjoy that area so much.
What Rose and Dennis started in

conjunction with the Ag Society some

seven years ago has now turned into a
major attraction to Strathmore at Christmas time, drawing numbers close to
Heritage Days, said Councillor Rocky
Blokland.
Thank you is not enough, you are
what makes Strathmore a great community, your volunteers are what makes
Strathmore such a great community
and all I can say is thank you to each
and every one of you, said Mayor Michael Ell.
The original request was for $5,000.
Councillor Brad Walls moved for an increase in support to the tune of $7,500.
We were blown away by this donation as well as the kind words expressed by all the council members and
Mayor Ell. It was greatly appreciated by
all of us, said Hamrlik after the meeting.
We will now be able to repair our
candy cane alley which is a cost of approximately $2,300 for the 40 candy
canes, as well as have more for the kids
during the annual New Years event in
2015/2016.

HOME BUSINESS?

Do you operate a Home-based Business? Are you aware that in the Town
of Strathmore, anyone operating a business from residence requires a
Development Permit to operate a home-based business?
There are two types of home-based businesses in Strathmore.

services. All business is conducted by phone, fax, and computer or, you go
to your clients home to deliver your services. Several examples of a Home
Office: website management, contractors providing mobile contractor
services electrician, plumber or handy-man, mobile massage therapists,
mobile counselling services.

coming to your home to receive services. For example: hairdressers,
massage therapists, esthetics, dressmakers, small engine or household
appliance repairs, music instructors, tutoring.

New homes must include rain barrels

Continued from Page 1

Fischer feels rain barrels are a viable
option to dealing with the three water
issues. He does have some concerns
about making it mandatory in new subdivisions in all cases, but said he doesnt
have enough experience in Strathmore
to be definitive about that because in a
case where the bed rock is really shallow, and there are perched water tables
it may be down just below footing level,
but adding a house and driveway on it
could pull it up a foot.
In those cases a rain barrel could be
a great benefit because what youre often doing is concentrating a lot of that
stormwater into a very narrow space between two houses, said Fischer.
Councillor Bob Sobol is an advocate
of the proposal and said that garden
and lawn irrigation accounts for approximately 40 per cent of water usage during the summer months. By using rain
barrels homeowners can also save 500
to 600 gallons of potable water when it
comes to their irrigation.
Has it happened anywhere else? I
dont think so, but Im not sure if that is
a reason for us not to be aggressive with
this amendment. We know it works, this
is part of an education process that
were trying to bring in and it may just
hopefully flow from the new areas to
other areas in town once people find
out, said Sobol.
There are some issues when it comes
to maintaining the rain barrels, but they
are fixable, said Sobol. He has three rain
barrels and said they take a few minutes
to deal with throughout the year, but the
benefits far outweigh any time that you
have to spend on them.
We have to take the lead on this
council. Its the right thing for us to do
for our community, its the right thing
to do for our constituents and it is the
right thing to do for the environment,
said Sobol.
Councillor Denise Peterson said in addition to what rain barrels will do for
stormwater management, residents also
need to reconsider using potable water
as irrigation. Strathmore is not in an area
of great rainfall, and the water comes
from a river that is losing capacity as
more and more water users tie into it
with each year. Water conservation is a
concern for much of the province.
If these rain barrels arent used properly though, youre defeating the entire
purpose. When I say that, it brings me
to October, November when things start
getting colder, if you dont have these

barrels empty I can see in the spring a

lot of these barrels are going to end up
in the recycle yard, said Blokland.
Im not sure if rain barrels should be
mandated by bylaw, I think the education part would be a better way to go.
Councillor Brad Walls would like to
see it looked at as an option for the
areas in town that are a concern. He
would rather see an incentive program
set up, and would like to see an education program to better educate people
and allow them to make that decision.
Sobol agreed that there are better
ways to deal with stormwater, but said
thats not what the amendment is about.
This isnt just about stormwater, thats
the issue I keep trying to make, this is
about education, this is about saving our
water and a swale, or other methods to
deal with stormwater does not increase
our amount of potable water use on our
plants and trees and grass. I just feel
that with it being mandated this is our
chance, this is our opening to start education, said Sobol.
He agrees with the education side, but
also said that the town has to show the
way and has to demonstrate they are
serious about this as a viable option.
He knows nothing stops a homeowner
from using a rain barrel, but at least the
option will be there.
The amendment was approved with
Councillors Blokland and Walls opposed. All new homes developed are
now required to have a rain barrel. A
rain barrel costs approximately $50.

Tea is the most popular beverage in the world.

It is low in caffeine (about 40mg per cup). Its
inexpensive and it also contains antioxidants and
phytochemicals which some believe are good
for our health. Even the people of Turkey where

prefer tea. Had your cuppa today?
Some drugs can be given only by injection
because stomach acid destroys the drug when
given by mouth. There is research going on at
MIT which developed a special capsule coated
with tiny needles which can release the drug
into the stomach lining. The gold standard drug
for this approach is insulin which traditionally
must be given by injection. Its early times but
promising.
Take good care of your feet. There are 56 bones

allow the toes some room. Finally, exercise them
regular. Your whole body will benefit.

the Center for Learning and Attention Disorders in

Portsmouth, N.H. with Dr. Richard Guare.
She said the most fulfilling aspect of her work is
spending time with kids and families.
In the clinic setting I enjoy much more contact
directly with kids and directly with parents, she
says. I like the puzzle solving. Parents come in
and say, Help me figure out my kid.
Executive Skills, says Dawson, refer us to the
cognitive processes required to plan, organize,
and execute activities. They are the frontal lobe
functions that begin to emerge shortly after birth
but take two full decades or longer to fully mature.
Dawson went through the 11 skills in the order
that they begin in the brain; response inhibition,
working memory, emotional control, flexibility,
sustained attention, task initiation, planning and
prioritizing, organization, time management, goaldirected persistence and metacognition (problem
solving, self-monitoring and self evaluation).
Dawson said youngsters who are disorganized
or forgetful, who have difficulty managing their
time, staying on task, controlling their feelings all
have problems with executive skills.
Things like procrastination are said to peak at
mid to late 20s. All of the skills talked about originate in the frontal lobe of the brain and it takes
25 years for that part of the brain to reach full
maturation.
Kids who have these difficulties need assistance
from their parents, caregivers and teachers to
identify where they lag or lack in any of the skills
listed.
Dawson stated that parents need to be their
childrens frontal lobes until they are developed.
Three primary ways to help children include
changing their environment to reduce the impact
of weak executive skills, teaching those executive
skills, and the use of incentives to get children to
practice the skills that are harder for them.
I always enjoy fellow parents coming together
to share their stories, experiences and even giggling together, said parent Candace Warder of
the presentation. I appreciate knowing Im sur-

rounded by other caring parents who have questions. I am thankful for SHA for bringing leading
knowledgeable speakers in for parents. I am looking forward to reading Peg Dawsons books.
Dawson was the keynote speaker at the semester break and professional development day for
the staff and teachers of the two schools. She was
able to delve deeper into what executive skills
means and what actions teachers could take to
help their students be the best they could be.
Peg Dawson presented us with great insights
about executive functioning skills that affect the
lives of all students across all ages and abilities,
said parent, teacher and chair of SHA parent council Darcee Evans. She shared practical and everyday examples and gave recommendations that we
could implement in our classroom the very next
day.
Dawsons has written and co-authored many
books on the subject including Smart but Scattered, and Smart but Scattered for Teens. For more
information about Dawson and her work, visit her

The art of Letting go

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

If you ask Annette Stanwick about forgiveness,
shell likely tell you that it can be very difficult to
give to someone who has hurt you deeply.
In 1999 one of her brothers was murdered. She
felt anger, pain, fear and other emotions towards
the killers for what they had done to her brother.
In dealing with the pain and learning to let go
she found she was inspired to help others do the
same.
On Jan. 29, she spoke to couples about Letting
Go & Living Free at the Days Inn and Suites in
Strathmore. The seminar teaches couples about
how to let the past go and how to live free of
anger.
I was a very angry woman for a time. Id never
dreamed I would feel publicly led to forgive my
brothers murderers in the courtroom in Virginia,
said Stanwick.
After that day in the courtroom Stanwick just
wanted to acknowledge her pain. Letting it go
took a great deal of courage, something she wanted to stress to the couples attending the seminar.
The seminars dont just cover letting go of anger
related topics, they also cover letting go of relationship issues, letting go of past hurt by people
you trust and just learning to live free of anger,
pain, fear and regret.
It can be all kinds of things because we as human beings are not immune to being hurt or to
hurting others. Then, unless we know or find a
way to heal from those hurtful experiences, we
can hurt for a very long time, said Stanwick.
The couples that have attended these seminars
have seen results and the feedback has been very
positive to improve their lifestyles.
One time a couple attended a seminar and she
could tell they were angry with each other. She
taught them the freedom formula she shares with

people and with it they were able to resolve their

anger.
They came to another seminar that I did and
when they walked in the room, I couldnt believe
what I was seeing. They were radiant and so happy and they said never in the 35 years had they
been so pleased, said Stanwick.
One thing she hopes people will take out of
these seminars is that it is possible to let go of
negative emotions and to somehow find happiness in their lives.
The goal is to help them understand through
real life experiences that forgiveness and letting
go is possible. I give them some tools that they
can take home and use in their own lives, and Ill
show them examples at the end of the seminar,
said Stanwick.
Her next seminar will be Letting go and Living
Free of Fear on Feb. 25 here in Strathmore.

Hope Bridges encourages adult expression

Canada Day in Kinsmen Park
PATRICIA TIMMERMANS
Hope Bridges Society

Strathmore residents enjoy a celebration and
Canada Day in Kinsmen Park last year was no exception.
Along with local charities, groups and businesses, Hope Bridges was invited to represent their
involvement in the community at Kinsmen Park.
After some careful thought about how to show
what Hope Bridges is about, Coordinator Wanda,
Creative Support Heather and Go Green Upcycling Workshop Facilitator Trisha decided to let
the adults paint on the back of recycled wallpaper.
This painting class in the park wasnt about
brushes and canvas. Passersby would be recruited
to kick off their shoes and paint with their feet!
The first few onlookers were skeptical, some
avoided eye contact, but when a few courageous
individuals took off their shoes, others stopped to

watch.
The Hope Bridges Society serves adults of the
community, which meant no pushing their kids
into the spotlight for this activity. A few adult-sized
feet stepped into mainly red paint, the color of
Canada Day, then onto the canvas. An eclectic collage of footprints created by community feet was
the result and today it hangs on the wall at FCSS.
To those who created it, like Joanne, seeing the
collage is a permanent reminder of a pleasant
Canada Day in the park with her grandchildren.
Questions from the public about this unique piece
generally start the conversation of what it means
to sign up for a workshop. The painters were inspired and others were excited to hear that Hope
Bridges is here for all adults of Strathmore and
Wheatland County who wish to become involved.

Days gone by
PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
First of all, Id like to apologize to any curler who
may have been offended by last weeks column. If
it makes you feel better, I got to spend more quality time sleeping out in my re-purchased Mustang!
It was while I was visiting curlers, and burping one, that I started to think of how times have
changed. I better explain. After a hard fought win,
I was patting my pal Kane on the back for a job
well done. It was at that exact moment that he let
out a belch. I felt like I had him over my shoulder
and was burping him. However, thats cute when
the kid is six months old, not 52! I did check to
see if I had any beer soaked nachos or spittle on
me! Phew no schrapnel!
I got to thinking (because my mind, at curling
rinks, wanders) about kids today vs. kids in my
day. Growing up in the late 60s and mid 70s was
way different than now. Back then, moms and
dads were not Snowplowor Helicopter parents.
These, Ive read, are parental types who smooth
all obstacles from in front of their kids, or they
hover over them making sure theyre treated well,
and helped a great deal. Todays parents (and Ive
done this, too) make sure that little Johnny and
Emma have every opportunity to succeed.
When I was growing up, if you failed a test,
you failed there were no re-tests. There were
deadlines for things, and you lost marks for late
assignments. Nowadays, thats not the case, with
a move to no zeroes or penalties for late assignments. There can be a danger of creating a sense
of entitlement in some students. I had a guy hand
in a test, and while doing so, he asked, whens
the re-test?
Uh, there is none, I replied. Remember, the
last week of us reading and discussing Act II, and
my riveting review with you in yesterdays class?
No, huh well, theres no re-test we had plenty of class time to get everything straight, and you
never even asked one question!
I thought back to what sarcastic comment my
old English teacher would have given me back in
1977!
Ah, the Seventies! You organized your own
sports games with pals, you didnt need Mom or
Dad to be on boards to plan out each days activities. Do our kids even know how to just go out

and play, anymore? We organize and supervise the

kids whole lives. We cant bear the thought of
injuries, so we bubble wrap them all. If you lived
in a small town in the 70s, you didnt wear a bike
helmet. If you did, there would have been many
choice comments coming your way! I know helmets are safer, but we had long hair in the 70s,
and helmets wouldve messed up our hair. Besides, I never knew one kid in all my hundreds
of hours of riding, who ever hurt his head! Sure,
Joeys front tire got kicked in a bike race, he did
go over his handlebars, and he did swear a lot at
Brian after impact, but he still had no head injury (we always thought the head injury happened
way before we met him!).
Parents didnt worry about the environment
as much as now, either. Why, Friday after school
meant one thing to my brother and me. Yep, we
got to light the burning barrel chock full of the
weeks garbage, and watch everything melt and
burn. Sure, there may have been toxic chemicals
coming off plastics, painted cans, and everything
else. What a great way to end a tough week at
school!
School in the 70s was also different. We had a
lot of educated flower children teachers with
new methods (Ill bet they drove old teachers
nuts, too!).
In Social Studies 7, we got to go in groups, create our tribes, and make artifacts out of clay and
whatever else we could find. Then, theyd send
us out into the school field where wed dig holes,
and bury our tribes artifacts. Days later, wed be
led around on architectural digs.
They actually gave wild Grade 7s shovels and
picks to dig up other tribes things. The object
was to deduce what each tribe was based on, and
write reports. Ah, the shovel battles the inserting of garbage and fake artifacts to screw up other
groups. Kids running with shovels is also not such
a good thing helmets would have helped more
for that, than for our bike rides!

To the Editor
Albertas current political state is not a new phenomenon. It occurred in other times and places leading to a national unofficial
holiday. On Feb. 6 we celebrate National Lame Duck Day, to recognize and celebrate elected officials who are about to leave their
term in office. Are you beginning to wonder exactly how many
current Alberta MLAs are lame ducks and wont be returning to
office after the next provincial election?
The expression originated in the 1700s referring to a stockbroker who did not meet his debts. In the 1860s it gained acceptance
as a term for officeholders, specifically, elected officials who were
soon leaving office and perhaps felt less accountability to constituents so took advantage of their position prior to leaving office. The 20th Amendment to the United States Constitution, also
known as the Lame Duck Amendment, was passed to shorten
the length of the lame duck term and came into effect on Feb. 6,
1933, hence, the national day of celebration.
Premier Prentice was crafty in enticing former Wildrose MLAs
to cross the floor thus creating an extended lame duck period in
Alberta. The opposition voice that a great number of constituents
wanted was muted and trust in the democratic process shattered.
There is talk that many of these same MLAs will face significant
opposition to retain their seats, even in the short time frame that
is being bunted about should Prentice disregard current legislation by calling an early election.
The following statement by MLA Bruce Rowe provides a confirming insight regarding how exactly the PCs are addressing issues concerning Albertans:
You know, its a shame to have to say this, but its amazing to
me the doors that are open since I crossed the floor. I get into
ministers office(s) and get things done. Its just its amazing. Its
really not the way it should be, but it is the way it is.
Shouldnt what is best for the entire populace be a primary
consideration or at minimum what benefits the majority of Albertans?
When asked what returning true conservatism to government
was, Rowe replied to reporters: It means managing the money
properly. We all know that this crisis theyre calling it is selfmade. They have drained off all of the interest from the Heritage
(Savings) Trust Fund, theyve drained the Sustainability Fund,
theyve over-spent, theyve mismanaged health care, education
and so on. He (Prentice) wants to get it back to where it should
be.
After 43 years as governing party, the Alberta PCs appear more
concerned with retaining power and their place in the history
books rather than addressing the primary needs and concerns of
the populace. A recent article in the Huffington Post informed
us that early in January 2015, Norways oil fund which collects
taxes from oil profits and invests the money, mostly in stocks
exceeded 5.11 trillion crowns ($905 billion) in value, making it
worth a million crowns per person, or about $177,000 per Norwegian about the same time this happened, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation released calculations showing that the taxpayers of Alberta are on the hook for $7.7 billion in debt, or about
$1,925 per person. It expects the debt to spike to $17 billion by

share the same natural resource, yet they
are enjoying much different results in a
socialist country, plus 46.24 per cent of
their energy sources are renewable. That is
impressive next to Albertas current stats.
In a recent blog post, Dave Cournoyer
asked: Who will undo the Jim Prentice
juggernaut?
Weve learned that it wont be the politicians. The only ones empowered to create
change for Albertans is Albertans through
their votes. It is not a time to be disheartened by events in Edmonton rather it is a
time to say No More.
Accurate representation takes place
through voter participation. The current
government is in place representing 43.95
per cent of the popular vote received from
54.4 per cent voter turnout during Election 2012. That means that less than 25
per cent of Alberta voters are deciding
who the provinces governing party is.
It is time to make your vote count. Take
time to become informed and participate.
We cannot expect things to change if we
keep doing the same old thing.

Free family activities planned

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
Family Day is coming up on
Feb. 16, and organizers are once
again hoping residents will unplug and head outdoors. The
day will start off with the annual
pancake breakfast hosted by the
Cheadle Lions at the Strathmore
Civic Centre.
The pancake breakfast is always really busy, so we recommend people to get there early
and plan to stay awhile, said
Tracy Simpson, community services coordinator for the Town
of Strathmore.
The breakfast will run from 9
a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a
magician, face painting and bal-

loon twisters for entertainment.

At the same time the Youth
Club is doing their carnival
again at the high school, which
is pretty cool, they have made
all the games and the kids will
get a prize for participating,
said Simpson.
The Carseland Kids Wellness
Coalition will be working with
the Youth Club to host the Kids
Carnival. All of the kids have
been hard at work, coming up
with different game ideas.
Following
breakfast
the
Healthy Eating, Active (HEAL)
Living Coalition is once again
hosting the Great Skate at Kinsmen Park from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
There will also be wagon rides,
music, hotdogs and hot choco-

late.
To wrap the day up nicely,
families are invited to go for
a swim at the Aquatic Centre,
courtesy of the 5 for Life coalition from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Were going to have a passport for the day and so if you
go to all of the events you can
get a stamp and then hand your
passport in (at any location) or
at the end at the pool, and well
be doing some draws for some
fun family prize packs, said
Simpson.
All of the events are free to
attend and will happen rain or
shine. Keep an eye on the Town
of Strathmore Facebook page
for any updates on the Family
Day activities.

Parliament reconvenes
KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

Since the first week in January, I have been
busy both as your Member of Parliament and as
the Minister of State for Finance. Two weeks ago,
I was pleased to meet with many constituents
in Drumheller and Strathmore as I hosted prebudget consultations. I also hosted similar events
in Calgary and throughout Ontario.
I have been in Ottawa meeting regularly with
Finance Minister Joe Oliver. There is a great deal
of work to be done as our energy-rich nation
deals with declining global oil prices. On Feb. 9,
I will be in Oyen and Hanna and the next day in
Drumheller and Three Hills, to hold open house
pre-budget consultations. I hope that many of
you will stop by to share with me your thoughts
on what should be in the next budget. If youre
unable to make it in, please visit www.fin.gc.ca
to send in your ideas electronically.
This week Members of Parliament have returned to Ottawa and we continue to talk about
the fragile global economic recovery. Declining
world oil prices are affecting our oil producing
provinces including Alberta, as well as our national economy as a whole. In Alberta, we have
seen cycles like this before. I have every confidence in our energy industrys ability to weather
this storm. Furthermore, Canadas economy is
diversified. Other industries across Canada are
strong.
Canadian exporters and manufactures, for example, will experience less input costs and benefit from a lower Canadian dollar. Canadian consumers are enjoying lower costs at the pump and
more dollars in their pockets to spend in their
local communities. And while these declining oil

prices will impact our flexibility, we will still balance the budget in 2015.
Our Government is going to deliver on the
promise we made to Canadians to eliminate the
budgetary deficit. We will do so by keeping on
track. We are going to continue to abide by our
strategy called Canadas Economic Action Plan.
Canadas Economic Action Plan is focused on
skill development. We want to make certain that
people have opportunities to the jobs of the future.
Our government is always focused on skill development. So, one of the things that we want
to continue to see is a well-educated workforce
and we want to make certain that people have
opportunities to the jobs of the future. Id like to
thank all local employers who have applied for
funding under the Canada Summer Jobs Program
2015. It is estimated that up to 35,000 young Canadians will benefit from summer employment
through Canada Summer Jobs 2015, while helping employers address skills shortages.
When we keep taxes low and help to create
jobs, we keep more money in the pockets of Canadian workers and their families. We want to
help families, industry, and municipalities. We
want to help Canadas economy continue to expand.

Pass the Salt

SHARING THE MESSAGE

As a pastor to a congregation,
the middle of the week is usually
where I begin to ponder the message that I am called to share in
our community worship. I look to
the readings, psalms, and songs
that will be read, recited or sung
and try to wring out of it them the
message I am called to share.
As I read for the coming Sunday,
I found what I would like to share
with you through Pass the Salt.
The reading in question comes
from the Book of Mark, in the
chosen passage, Jesus has done
many miraculous healings of the
sick and demon possessed and
the whole town gathered at the
door of the house where he was
staying. It says that early in the
morning he left the house and
went to a solitary place, where
he prayed. (Mk.1:29-39)
The disciples came searching for
him saying, everyone is looking
for you!
Throughout his earthly ministry,
Jesus was about action and
prayer or reflection. He would do
incredible works of ministry and
then withdraw to a solitary place
to remind himself, I believe, of the
real source of his power, the God
who loved him and called him to
serve.
Today, our lives are filled with

activity. Whether attending to a

host of daily duties, catching up
with friends and family through
cell phones, tablets, computers
and their attendant methods, we
are really busy.
I believe that the season of
Lent (that is fast approaching in
our church year), allows us to
become less busy and less driven
by the countless demands of our
daily lives. It is my hope that as
you read this you might be moved
to consider the value of silence
and solitary moments in your life.
Whether it would be walking
in the glory of creation, finding
a quiet space in your home or
taking a silent time in your work
place, I would encourage you to
see in the rhythms of Jesus life
that reality that we are at our best
when we are most aware of our
inner life through prayer, meditation or moments of silence.
In so doing we can take time to
reflect on where we are devoting
our time and energy in our daily
lives and perhaps make changes
that would allow us to be more
aware of those around us and our
call to reach out in hope and love
to them.
Have a wonderful week!

PC candidate hopeful announced

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
Reeve of Newell County Molly Douglass officially put her name up for nomination as the Progressive Conservative
(PC) MLA candidate for the StrathmoreBrooks constituency on Jan. 29. While
an election is still yet to be called, rumours are circulating that a provincial
election is looming on the
horizon.
Douglass is currently in
her 11th year as reeve. A
Newell County councillor
had decided not to run, and
had approached her to see
if she was interested in the
seat. She ran, won the position, and at her first meeting
as a councillor she was selected as the reeve.
I got frustrated about the
condition of some of our
rural provincial highways and became
involved with a group of people that
were lobbying to improve some of our
local highways that belonged to the
province, provincial responsibilities
and so thats how I got involved, said
Douglass about why she got involved
in politics to begin with.
Im certainly not tired of municipal
politics but I have received lots of encouragement to run from some of my
council mates and other residents and
so decided that it was time. Im proud
of what we have accomplished within
the County of Newell in last 10 years
through working together with our
other municipalities.
She strongly feels that good commu-

better, and said that in order to come
up with the solutions all of the questions need to be answered.
I just feel that we live in the best
place you can live in Canada, and probably the whole world and there are solutions. We just need to sit down and
work on them, find them, think outside
the box, said Douglass.
Municipal and provincial
politicians often work together on a lot of services
to the residents, and Douglass said she is interested in
being involved in some provincial decisions.
I think it would be interesting to look at provincial
responsibilities and roles,
and our municipal roles
and responsibilities and see
where things can be improved and that does not
mean downloading more responsibility
to municipal government unless theres
funds and the resources to follow that,
said Douglass.
I think we need to be fiscally smarter so we need to take a look at what
our needs truly are and then we need
to look at the services the people want,
the taxpayers want and ones that they
will pay for. I just think we need to
work on a plan, we need to have some
solutions so that we dont have the up
and down every few years over the oil
and gas royalties.

Relay for Life returns

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Relay for Life is returning to
Wheatland County on June 13, from 5
p.m. to 11 p.m. in Kinsmen Park.
In support of the event, the Canadian Cancer Society is hosting a Family Dance at Strathmores Ag Society
Quonset on Feb. 15 from 6 p.m. to 10
p.m.
We have a really great planning
committee and the way they want to
do it is to do miniature events each
month leading up to the Relay for Life
to get people excited and involved, and
let people know about the Relay, said
Siobhan Doherty, Revenue Fund Development Coordinator for the Canadian
Cancer Society. Our first one will be
the Family Dance and we thought it fit
pretty well into the Family Day weekend. It will have snacks for sale, face
painters and a DJ.
The event is open to everyone and all
the proceeds will be going back to the
Relay for Life, with the money raised
from that going back to the Canadian
Cancer Society.

and area.
My head committee member, Robin
Navin, she raised $7,000 for the Airdrie
Relay for Life last year. We approached
her and said what do you think the
Strathmore Relay for Life needed. She
said it needs to be a community family
event and she really wanted to see the
event come back, said Doherty. We
think this could be a really great way
to bring a community together while
fundraising and doing fun activities,
teaching your children about the idea
of giving back, but also having fun at
the same time.
The initiative behind the dance was
to get children and families out to an
affordable event that everyone can enjoy.
We thought lets do something
where the money is going back and its
not too expensive, said Doherty. That
was the main initiative, (it) was a great
way for us to make money, introduce
the events to the community and have
a small event that everyone can have
fun at.
Tickets for the dance will be available
at the door for $5 per person or $15 per
family.

Town looks into snow clearing

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Councillor Bob Sobol brought forward a request on Jan. 21 for administration to look into clearing snow from
sidewalks and pathways and see if the
town has the manpower and equipment needed to do so in 48 hours.
While I readily acknowledge that
Public Works personnel do a remarkable and commendable job, the fact
is that our town is growing, with that
comes additional sidewalks and pathways, said Sobol.
I also believe that if we are asking
our residents to clean their sidewalks
within 48 hours of a snowfall then we
should be prepared to comply as well.
He said many people use the pathways as sidewalks and would like to
see those done in the same time frame.
Im thinking this is an unfair situation from the towns side of things

This may not be a big fix is what I

am saying which is why I would like to
leave the pathways in there, said Sobol.
He continued on to say that if theres
a huge cost attached to it, it is not a
given that it will be paid, he would just
like to see the town try and figure out
how to fix things and what it would
take to do so.
The request was approved.

to try and clear 40 odd kilometers of

sidewalks and pathways in 48 hours,
that makes entirely no sense to me at
all, these are two different issues, said
Councillor Rocky Blokland.
Sobol reiterated that the motion just
deals with preparing a report to discover if it is feasible for the town with
the staff and equipment to be able to
clear the paths in the same 48-hour
timeframe.
Councillor Denise Peterson suggested not considering pathways in
the report because there are miles of
pathways. She said maintenance of the
pathways was not considered or anticipated when being built, and suggest
that it is a topic for another day.
Sobols argument is that at this point
in time the town is very close to success, and if all thats required to reach
success is an additional bobcat then its
a discussion he would like to see council have.

Im trying to raise money by selling my calendars for $10 each. I have

also saved my money from babysitting
and all of that kind of stuff, and so far
I have about $2,169 saved my goal is to
try and get $5,000, said Sandri.
A motion was made approving the
request. Council, administration and
members of the public also purchased
calendars from Sandri.

Getting ready for the games

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Colleen Huber, Games manager, and Donalda Ledene, board

chair for the Strathmore 2015 Alberta 55 plus Summer Games
committee, updated council on some of the events coming up,
and the money raised to-date.
With the current sponsorship, partnership contributions, fundraising and grants on Jan. 21 the committee was sitting at a
total of $693,106.14 raised.
Some of the fundraising events to come include the NHL/
Calgary Flames Alumni hockey game on March 15.
This is going to prove to be a lot of fun, I think, of our community. Its never been had here and probably wont be had
again for a while anyway, said Ledene.
The plan is to gradually reveal which players will be coming.
There will be an opportunity for three Strathmore residents to
win a bid to play with the alumni. Theres also a shot to bid to
be the coach for the day.
If you havent bought in yet, theres still time to get your
ticket for the Dream Vacation Raffle. There have been 2,000
tickets printed and each person that buys one for $100 gets 12
chances to win a $5,000 travel voucher.
Its a travel voucher so you can go wherever you want with
this, its not a preplanned trip, said Ledene.
The draw will be held on April 21.
May 30 is the Easy Going Golf tournament. Ledene said you
dont have to be a golf pro to play, anyone of any caliber is invited to come out and spend a day on the links.
Lastly, one event many people are already excited for is the
Beatles tribute concert being held on June 20.

All upcoming events, zone playoff results and more can be found on the website at 2015strathmoregames.ca
Tracy Simpson, community services
coordinator for the Town of Strathmore,
made a presentation to the Games committee following the report from Ledene
and Huber.
On behalf of the Town of Strathmore
we would like to provide some financial
contributions to the Games to make sure
they are a success and so today we would
like to present the Games with $131,000.
This money is going to go towards paying the staff wages so that the event is
run smoothly, is organized and successful, said Simpson.

Joyful Note Studio has only been in

Strathmore a couple of months but are
looking for anyone from a newborn to
age five and their parents.
I teach Kindermusik , theyre a music
and movement class, from birth to age
five. We do a lot of singing and its a lot
of rhythm, just to help with developmental skills, said Alexandrea Patzer, Joyful
Note head instructor. There is some literature to help with the cognitive abilities, motor skills and things that kids are
transitioning through.
Joyful Note Studio does not only offer
Kindermusik, but other various musical
lessons for youth.
I also teach private voice and piano
lessons, so the Joyful Notes Studio, its an
umbrella for Kindermusik lessons, said
Patzer.
The lessons also provide the opportunity for kids and their parents to interact
with one another in fun-filled setting.
Its a fun extracurricular activity for
kids and especially for stay at home
moms who are looking for something to
do, said Patzer. I teach family classes for
the Kindermusik, you can bring any of
your kids (that) are five and under.
She brought the program from Regina
to Strathmore because she felt that there
was a market here for kids to participate
in these types of classes.
There arent too many other classes
like this offered in Strathmore and there
isnt specifically other Kindermusik
teachers in the area, with nearest one being Calgary, said Patzer.
Registration is ongoing and lessons
will begin on March 4, which will be held
at the Strathmore Alliance Church.

The annual Laurie Ruppe Memorial
Ringette tournament was once again
a success. Four of the 14 local teams
playing medalled in what were nail-biting games in each division final.
The tournament went really smoothly. Our Strathmore teams did amazing,
(and) for the first time that we can remember, we had four teams in the med-

al games, said Kimberley Proust, tournament coordinator.

Our U10 (Scorpions) Step 3 team
got silver, the U12C team got gold, the
U14A team got gold and our U16B got
silver.
The tournament had positive feedback and organizers thanked the volunteers for their dedication.
We have such an amazing association, everybody chips in and does their
job and to run such a successful event

like this, you have to have volunteers for

the raffle tables and the 50/50. We had
lots of good feedback from the teams
that like coming to this tournament, the
girls all had fun, said Proust.
Our community is a huge support
to us. They donate things to the raffle
tables and the coaches bags, without
them we would not be able to have a

Braves peaking down the stretch

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Braves appear to be

primed for the upcoming postseason
with a convincing win over the Southwest Rockies 16-1 on Jan. 31 and edging
the Cranbrook Eagles 8-6 on Feb. 1.
The local double-A peewee team, with
a 25-2-1 record, are within two points of
the first place Olds Grizzlys heading into
their showdown on Feb. 8 (4:15 p.m.) at
the Strathmore Family Centre.
In the blowout win against the Rockies,
Bryce Benfield and Tristan Zandee led
the way with three apiece, while teamleading scorer Kyle Crnkovic added two.
Mo Hakim, Max Schafer, Kage Yellowfly, Adam Kirkpatrick, Nolan Bailey, Zach
Nicholls, Anson McMaster and Tegan
Skehar rounded out the offence for the
Braves
Goalie Jackson Barrys only flaw was
letting a late second period power play
goal in, on an otherwise strong night between the pipes.
The Braves found a much stiffer test in
Cranbrook on Sunday afternoon as they
played a hard working Eagles team.
After having period leads of 4-2 and

6-4, the boys were able to pull away in

the third and survive a late push from
the Eagles.
Crnkovic led the way with four, Yellowfly had two while Max Kathol and Kyle
Bray added singles.
Other than the crucial game against
Olds on Sunday afternoon, the Braves
will be hosting the Sylvan Lake Lakers on
Feb. 6 (7:30 p.m.) in Hussar.
WARRIORS KEEPING CONSISTENT
The Wheatland Warriors continued
their consistent play, picking up valuable
points with playoffs approaching.
The local double-A bantam team beat
the Edge School Mountaineers 4-3 on
Jan. 30 and tied the Okotoks 2-2 on Feb.
1.
Tarun Fizer opened up the scoring in
the first and Jayden Hendricks scored in
the second.
Hassan Akl and Tanner Boutin rounded out the offense in the third.
Fizer and Tyler Skehar sniped in the tie
against the Oilers.
Next up for the Warriors is on Feb. 7
in Red Deer against the Steel Kings (2:30
p.m.) and on Feb. 8 (7 p.m.) against the
Airdrie Lightning at the Strathmore Fam-

ily Centre.
CHIEFS CUSHION LEAD
IN STANDINGS
The Wheatland Chiefs continued to
pad their lead atop the standings with a
5-0 win over the NWCAA Stamps on Jan.
27 and a dominant 8-4 road win over the
Taber Golden Suns on Jan. 30.
After what was a scoreless opening
frame against the Stamps, Chris Rebeyka
opened the scoring in the second while
Brendan Moore added one late in the period to make it 2-0 after two.
Cole Busslinger scored a power play
marker in the third and later added another to make it 4-0, before Rebeyka
sniped his second of the game to cap off
the scoring.
On Friday night in Taber, Rebeyka
scored two, while Busslinger, Jayden
Smith, James Farmer, Kaleb Robinson,
Ryan Skytt and Kody Hammond scored
one each.
The local double-A midget team has a
pair of home games this weekend when
they take on the Airdrie Lightning on
Feb. 6 (7:30 p.m.) and the CRAA Blue the
following day (4:45 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Kings struggling to finish

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Kings played consistent hockey for 40 minutes against Banff
and Cochrane over the weekend, only to
watch leads evaporate in the third period.
We were the better team for 40 minutes in Cochrane, we had a couple of

lapses (with) our discipline, said head

coach Jeremy Blumes. They managed to
tie it up, theyve got a lot of guys that can
put the puck in the net and because of
the fiasco in Okotoks, three of our top
six forwards were suspended.
I thought we played with a lot more
structure and more urgency than we
have in the past, but were werent able to
seal the deal.
In the 4-3 overtime loss against the
Generals, Lucas Jones sniped two while
Matt Thomson added one for the Kings.
In Banff, the boys were leading 3-1 going into the third, and unfortunately undisciplined play resulted in a 7-4 loss to
the Bears.
We were leading 3-1 going into the
third, we scored on a 5-on-3 to make it
4-1 and then the parade to the penalty
box began, said Blumes. There were
multiple 5-on-3s for Banff and their power play revolves around Ryan Barrow,
who is somewhere in the Top 10 in scor-

ing, and when you give those guys time

and space, theyre going to capitalize.
Once the Bears got that third goal, the
Kings became frustrated and could not
keep their emotions in check.
When they scored that second and
third one on 5-on-3s, the adversity kicked
in and we didnt respond the right way,
said Blumes.
He admits it is frustrating as a coach
having certain players act the way they
do and not learn their lesson.
It shows a lack of respect to the message weve been preaching of discipline,
to your fellow teammates that you cant
control your emotions, said Blumes.
Kirby Ruzesky scored twice, while
Brayden Beckley and Brett Dumaine
had one each to round out the offence
in Banff.
The Kings will conclude the regular
season on Feb. 7 versus the Airdrie Lightning (8 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family
Centre.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the

passing of Mrs. Yvonne Douglas of Strathmore,
Alberta at the age of 85 years. Yvonne passed
away peacefully at the Strathmore Hospital with
loving family by her side. Yvonne was predeceased by her husband Elmer in 2004 as well
as her three brothers, Peter, Bruce, and Rowland.
She is survived by one sister, Sandra Epp of Surrey, B.C.; sons Murray (Marilyn) of Calgary and
James (Chris) of Chestermere; daughter Marcia
Gutsfeld (Mike) of Strathmore; six grandchildren,
four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces
and nephews. Yvonne was born in Lethbridge, Alberta and spent most of her life on the family farm
near Gleichen, Alberta, contributing to the farming lifestyle as well as to the rural community.
Always willing to do whatever it took, she also
waited tables at Wilsons Coffee Shop over several
years and spent twenty-five years as an on-call
matron for the Gleichen RCMP detachment. She
will always be remembered for her love of cats,
her willingness to converse with anyone, and her
pleasant, but always determined, nature. In lieu
of flowers, donations may be made directly to
the Alzheimer Society of Calgary (201, 222-58
Ave. S.W., Calgary, T2H 2S3) or the Strathmore

Gold stays home

MEL BOSCHEE
U14 Ringette

The U14A Strathmore Ice competed

in the hometown Laurie Ruppe Memorial Tournament Jan. 30-Feb. 1 at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
Their first game Friday night saw the
team of 12 take on Medicine Hat Velocity. It was a very competitive game,
which saw Strathmore Ice take the 7-4
win.
The second game in round robin was
played Saturday morning. The Strathmore Ice played host to Beaumont
Benders, a team the Ice had played very
early in their ringette season.
Knowing it was going to be battle and
not sure if they were a morning team,
everyone came ready to play. When the
final buzzer rang, Strathmore Ice took
the 6-1 win.
Sunday morning brought the Strathmore Ice to the arena for a final round

robin game against Fort McMurray and

a win would mean undefeated in the
pool.
There was lots of bumping as both
teams wanted the win. After a high scoring game, the Ice pulled off an 11-7 win,
meaning a trip to the gold medal game.
Sunday at noon, the Ice took on the
Medicine Hat Velocity for the gold. After the first period of an intense rivalry,
Medicine Hat led 1-0. Between periods
the coaches provided inspiration and
maybe the girls caught a glimpse of
gold, whatever it was, the Ice came to
score some goals in the second.
With the final buzzer brought cheers,
screams and even tears, the Strathmore
Ice won 5-3 and the gold stays home.
To sum up the weekend: intriguing, intense, precision, powerful, forceful, passionate and - most of all - edge of your
seat entertainment. Congratulations to
the hometown U14A Strathmore Ice for
capturing the gold at home!
