Wet Sieve: University of Maine Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering CIE 366 Soil Mechanics Laboratory

This document provides instructions for conducting a wet sieve analysis of a soil sample to determine the grain size distribution. Key steps include oven drying an initial soil sample, soaking it, washing it through a series of sieves, weighing the material retained on each sieve, and calculating percentages retained, passing, and the coefficient of uniformity and curvature to classify the soil type. Plots of the grain size distribution are also produced from the sieve analysis data.

* Before Lab *
1. Oven dry a 300 to 600 gm specimen of soil.
2. Weigh and record as initial weight.
3. Soak the specimen for at least 1 hour, preferably, overnight.

Minitial =

* Washing Procedure *
1. Place #200 washing sieve with #4 on top over the bucket.
2. Transfer about 1/3 of the sample to the sieves.
3. Wash the fine soil through the screen using a squirt bottle.
4. Continue washing until the wash water appears to be only slightly cloudy.
The entire sample should not require more than two quarts of wash water.
5. Weigh the drying pan.
Mpan =
6. Transfer the washed soil to drying pan.
7. Repeat washing procedure for remaining thirds of the sample.
8. "Oven dry" the sample by cooking it on the stove.
9. Allow sample to cool and weigh it.
Mtotal =
Mwashed = Mtotal - Mpan =
* Sieve Analysis Procedure *
1. Place the soil in the top of the sieve stack.
2. Put the cover on the stack and shake for 10 minutes in the sieve shaker.
3. Transfer the soil retained on each sieve to a pan and weigh.
Use sieve brushes to remove as much as practical.
You may want to tare the pan on the scale to avoid pan mass.

Mpan =

* Sieve Analysis Calculations *

1. Compute the % retained on each sieve, based on the intital mass before washing (Minitial).
2. Then sum the % retained in the next column.
for example: on the 1" sieve row, add % retained of the 2" and 1" rows.
3. Compute % passing = 100% - sum(%retained)
4. Plot grain size distribution using sieve size and % passing. (see grain size sheet)
Click on chart, then use Chart - Source Data - Series - Add - and pick your x / y data
