A Lesson Plan in Afro-Asian Literature

I.

OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
A. Understand the ideas, beliefs, attitudes, and experiences of men,
women and children of ancient Egypt
B. Recognize that the past is represented and interpreted in
different ways
C. Appreciate the beauty of Egyptian literature
D. Ask and answer questions relevant to the focus of inquiry
E. Participate well in group activities

III.

PROCEDURE
A. Review
Students are asked by the teacher to give a recall of the past
lesson.
B. Motivation
1. Students are instructed by the teacher to watch a video
entitled The Egyptian Afterlife Book of the Dead courtesy
of History Channel
2. Retelling of the students of what they have watched
C. Vocabulary (Difficult Words)
1.papyrus: a thick material similar to paper made from the
papyrus plant which grows along the River Nile
2. tableau: a scene of a group of people
3. Hunefer: a scribe (or writer) based in Thebes
4. Anubis: the Egyptian god of tombs and the ruler of the
underworld, usually shown as a man with the head of a jackal
5. Thoth: the Ibis-headed god of magic, writing, science and
judging the dead.
6. Ammit: a creature important in the Weighing of the Heart
ceremony, who is crocodile or dogheaded, the front part of her
body is a lioness or leopard, and her hind quarters are in the
form of a hippopotamus. She would eat the hearts of those who
were heavy with wrongdoings.
7. righteousness: being pure or holy
8. Horus: son of Isis and Osiris
9. Osiris: the ancient Egyptian god of the Afterlife
10. Isis: the wife of Osiris and the goddess of nature and magic
11. Nephthys: The sister of Isis and the useful goddess.
After vocabulary presentation, the teacher asks his students to
read the words and their meaning s loudly.
D. Lesson Proper

1. Students are divided into five (5) groups and are given ten
(10) minutes to do the following tasks:
Imagine you are an archaeologist and you have been asked
to give a presentation to an archaeological conference
about the Weighing of the Heart ceremony. Your task
is to prepare and deliver a presentation which explains as
many of the images on the papyrus as possible.
The winning group will be decided based on RUBRICS given
by the teacher
2. Presentation of each group
3. Announcing the winner based on rubrics
4. Comprehension Questions
a. What was the Weighing of the Heart?
b. Why did Anubis weigh the heart?
c. What was the heart weighed against?
d. Enumerate some of the spells written in the Book of the
Dead.
e. Why is it that in ancient Egyptian Afterlife, the HEART is the
one being tested? Why not the brain?
f. Explain the statement What you have sown, you will
reap.
E. Generalization
What do you think are the implications of the Afterlife belief to
the ancient Egyptians? to the rich people of their time? and to
the businessmen of their era?
F. Summarization
The teacher asks his students to summarize the lesson briefly.
