Additional I have realized that classroom management is the most important part of
Comments: teaching. Its imperative to establish a safe environment, and also a consistent
environment. Students need to know what is expected of them.

1. Activities that I had responsibility for include Time for Kids magazine articles, a
few shared reading lessons, a reading group (two books), and morning meeting. I
have gone on two field trips. Then, of course, I planned and taught the haiku unit.
Most of my lessons this year were collaborative or active. My goal was to guide
students toward understanding. I quickly learned that students in third grade need
more structure than that. Sending students in the right direction is good sometimes,
but mostly, students need to know what is expected of them. To change this, I started
to model, list long instructions, and repeat myself.
2. My biggest strength this year was taking the time to get to know students and
what makes them smile. It has also been growth. I have never worked with more
than five students at a time before this year. Mostly, I have worked one on one. Now, I
have a better understanding that a classroom runs on predictability. Schedules,
routines, and expectations must be repeated and repeated and repeated. So must
praise and interaction. I am also good at accepting criticism and trying new things. I
know I have a lot to learn, but that is why I am here. I am new. I am improving. I am
human. And I am persistent.
3. I have many areas in which I need to grow, and expect I always will. However, I
think that there are a few that I need to focus on this summer before I begin student
teaching next fall. First is stress management. While my self-reflection is important,
sometimes I overanalyze what I am doing, and it makes me anxious. I need to learn
how to practice slowing down my thoughts, taking a deep breath, and finding focus
in an objective while Im teaching. At this point, I am much better at making
objectives for my students than I am at making them for myself. Doing this, I believe,
will help me focus on one thing per lesson. Perhaps this is clarity in expectations or
giving formative assessments. Perhaps its as simple as smiling more. The next thing
is classroom management. This will be the first and last time I am Miss Rylee. I
have learned to keep a straight face, and that students will meet the expectations
you set for them. I think a new start will be the best way for me to practice this. I am
looking forward to working at a summer camp in the next few months to do this. I
began this semester trying to be approachable and kind. But its not enough to see
the best in our students. We must expect the best of our students.
