RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Research in Biology
Dr. Peter Vollbrecht, Hope College August 2016-May 2017
• Investigated bacterial species within the gut microbiome in junk-food fed versus regular chow-fed
rats, with a particular interest in exploring the microbiota capable of producing substrates with might
cross the blood-brain barrier, leading to alterations in the reward pathway of the brain
• Gained experience in the reading of scientific literature, design and implementation of of methods,
RT-PCR, tissue homogenization, animal care and testing
• Investigated the longest standing college tradition in the country, The Pull, an endurance tug-of-war,
and its physiological effects on its participants
• Completed fitness testing on participants through measurements of flexibility, grip strength, body
composition, and vertical jump
• Urine and blood were collected from the participants to assess biomarkers in relationship to muscle
inflammation and break down, as well as hydration
• Studied the impact of a childhood obesity intervention program on the dietary patterns of its
participants compared to a control group of non-intervention children
• Constructed the IRB application, analyzed the pre and post food logs of the participants on SPSS
• Found significant data indicating the program was successful in improving the dietary quality of
participants
• Completed an independent research study on the effects of a nutrition education intervention on the
dietary habits of female collegiate cross country runners
• Learned valuable skills in writing informed consent, reading scholarly articles, and method design
• Gained further experience with SPSS analysts software by analyzing the pre and post dietary intake
of participants
• Utilized 3-day food records to look into pertinent intake trends of the runners
• Studied the effect of a childhood obesity intervention program on the physiological and
psychological health outcomes of its participants
• Administered data collection on participant anthropometrics including height, weight, body fat
percentage, waist circumference, blood pressure, heart rate, and psychometric outcomes

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
Sports Performance Intern
University of Michigan Athletics, Ann Arbor, MI January 2018-Present
• Supervised the work of the undergraduate-level interns, managed the fueling stations, took inventory
of athlete nutrition products, and worked alongside the head sports dietitian
• Evaluated Eastern Michigan’s student-athlete weighing policies for their impact on public health
• Designed and implemented training regimens for a variety of athletes (children to semi-professionals)
• Kept up to date on current sports performance research with weekly quizzes and readings
• Assisted Holland Hospital registered dietitians with the sorting of patient files and other office work
• Shadowed the RD’s in various setting such as diabetes education classes, inpatient counseling, and
outpatient nutrition consultations
• Organized and directed physical activity programming for the children involved in Foundations for
Fitness
• Communicated regularly with parents on the status of their child’s progress in the program
• Mentored several children in one-on-one settings outside of the weekly group program activities
• Completed lab work on civilians, including body composition testing through the use of BOD POD
and aerobic fitness testing through the use of the metabolic carte to assess VO2 Max
• Explained test results and helped the clients decipher what they meant for overall health
• Spent 100+ hours shadowing physical therapists in a variety of settings (inpatient, home care,
outpatient, independent practice, and nursing homes)
• Provided clinical support by working various modalities in assistance to the physical therapists
• Walked clients through exercise routines through demonstration of proper form and critique of
improper form
PUBLIC SPEAKING
• Running Fit Sports Nutrition Series 2018
• Each week through the month of July I presented on a variety of sports nutrition topics to
Running Fit customers
• Presented topics related to intuitive eating, nutrient timing for sport, and fad diets
• Spoke to Hope College students on the field of public health nutrition and the graduate
school application process
• Invited 1-2 times per year to give a holistic nutrition presentation to the parents/guardians of
the children involved in the Foundations for Fitness program
• Spoke to Hope College’s mens and women’s cross country teams on the importance of
nutrition to sports performance
• Obesity and the Brain Journal Club Presenter, Hope College 2016
• Discussed and presented on scientific literature pertaining to obesity and the brain
