Final Letter

The teacher had the students learn about famous artists and create self-portraits in class. They drew pictures of each other and made collages reflecting how they felt. The teacher wants the parents to look at their child's self-portrait to understand how they see themselves. As an optional assignment, the teacher is asking parents to also draw a self-portrait for their child to examine in order to help the students learn about themselves and others.

Dear Parents and guardians,

Last week in class we did some exciting things. We learned about art and many different artists

such as Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. After learning about different art

styles and artists, the class picked a partner and took pictures of each other. The pictures were

put into a collage and each child drew their own self portrait. The goal of this was to help each

and everyone of us to see ourselves in a different way and realize that everyone is different and

beautiful in their own ways. After they finished making their collages, I ask them to write on a

piece of paper how they felt; were they nervous, happy, upset etc. They then used these feelings

to color in their backgrounds. Once the year has came to an end, we will once again do this

activity and see how their artistic styles and feelings have changed through the year. I believe

that self-reflection and how you see yourself is important and I want all of us to understand what

this means. I am asking all of the parents to use your child’s self portrait and try and understand

how they view themselves, and how they were feeling at the time. Once you have determined

this, I would like for you to draw one of yourself and let them look at it and decide this as well.

This assignment is optional but worth 10 extra points. This is a fun exercise that will help the

children expand and learn new things about themselves and others, so have fun with it and I hope

to see many portraits Monday morning. I have included a sample of a picture that was drawn. I

hope this helps!

Have a great weekend,

Mrs. Clayton
