Part 3 Hard Skills vs. Soft Skills

When it came to hard skills with teaching. I always knew there were the obvious one

such as a degree and being able to work with children. I didn’t realize that there were as many as

there are, however. I knew that being a teacher came with responsibilities and now I know a little

more about what they are. Soft skills are something that I knew you had to have. Being a teacher

isn’t a job for everyone. If you are in it for the wrong reasons such as money, then you should

probably consider a different career. Wanting to teach and help children has been my dream

since before I became a mother and skills such as helping children and families is something, I

am proud to say I possess.

My top choice in the career assessment was early childhood development and

services. This is the degree that I am working towards and my dream job. Professional

support services came in at number two on the career assessment and this is something that I

had never considered before but may be interested in when I further my education. Family

and community services was the third option that I was given. I am not sure if this job would

be for me. I love helping children and families, but social services are something that I have

seen firsthand can tear families apart. I know that they are there to help children, but I am

conflicted about some aspects of their job.

There are many things that a teacher could face daily that is diversity related. Having

children in your class from different backgrounds, who speak different languages, and are from

different cultures is something you must know how to handle or be open to learning. I believe

that one of the hardest things that I may face will be having parents who aren’t able to speak

English. I will be able to communicate through an interpreter, but that is not the one-on-one

personal relationship that I would like to be able to have with them.

1. What’s my present situation?

My present situation is that I am not able to communicate with my student’s

parents because they speak Spanish, and I am not fluent enough to have the

conversations with them that I would like to without a translator.

2. How would I like my situation to be?

I would like to be able to discuss the students progress and any other information

with the parents and have a one on one conversation with them.

3. What are my possible choices?

My choices are either to learn Spanish or continue with the translator.

4. What’s the likely outcome of each possible choice?

The outcome of using a translator would be that there would be a chance that the

parents needed to speak with me urgently and having a translator on hand always

is unlikely. In this instance, the parents would have to wait for a translator and in

an emergency, waiting isn’t an option. If I were to learn Spanish, the outcome

would possibly be the same. Learning a new language isn’t something that is

easy, and it takes time which in that scenario wouldn’t be an option.

5. Which choices will I commit to doing?

I believe that beginning to learn Spanish now would be a great start to the choice I

would like to make. Being involved in my children’s schooling is important and

so is the relationship that I have with their teachers. If I begin to learn now, by the

time I am teaching I believe I should be fluent enough to help in an emergency.

6. When and how will I evaluate my plan?

I would like to begin on this plan immediately. I will start by researching the best

ways to learn a new language and begin learning.

To me scripts are your norms. Things that you feel, do, believe and say. Some scripts that

I have are getting easily upset and worrying excessively about doing things perfectly. I quit

things that are important to me, allow some individuals in my life to treat my badly, I am very

critical of myself, and experience severe test anxiety.

Some of my scripts could be revised such as test anxiety and being critical of myself. I

think that getting a tutor to help make sure that I am fully prepared for a test could help with the

anxiety and speaking to a counselor or student success advisor could help with my critical

thinking.

My family and friends would say that I was caring and supportive. When I look at myself

however, I see someone who is overweight, angry all of the time and someone who doesn’t help

my family enough. My grandmother and my cousin were the most influential people in my life.

My grandmother raised me and my 7 brothers and sisters our entire life. We didn’t have money,

a nice house, new clothes or anything of that nature. What we did have however was love that

most people don’t get the chance to experience. We had a mom and a dad all in one person and

even without money, we never went without.

My perception on others unfortunately comes from my childhood. I was overweight most

of my life and got bullied daily. This has made it so when I see someone in nice clothes and not

speaking, I automatically think they are snobby, and I avoid them. Diversity is the new norm in

our society. Knowing things about others is helpful for when you meet them. For example, if you

had never met someone from Japan and you had a job where your client was Japanese, you

probably wouldn’t know what to expect. This also ties into being culturally aware.

In conclusion, even though my dream is to become an early education teacher, there are

other options available to me if I decide to change career paths. I have some scripts that could be

fixed easily and I will change them a little at a time. This not only includes my norms however,

but also my perception. I will no longer let my past determine my future.
