Homework Questions 3

The document discusses two topics: 1) the effects of stress on parenting and child development, and 2) differences between low-income and higher-income daycare centers. Regarding the first topic, it states that stressed parents are more likely to take out their anger and frustrations on their children through abuse or neglect. This can perpetuate a cycle of abuse across generations. Regarding the second topic, it notes that low-income daycare centers have less trained staff who mainly ensure child safety, while higher-income centers have highly educated teachers who develop the children through respectful interaction and teaching manners and school readiness.

Homework Questions #3

Brittany Clayton

Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana

Homework 3
2

1. When a person is stressed, everything is a trigger. If a person walking by said "Hello." this

could bother them because they were doing something else and it got them off track.

Unfortunately children often suffer when their parents are stressed, and they often learn these

behaviors and carry them on to their children. In low-income households, the stress levels are

much higher than a normal household. The parents are wondering how they will pay rent or put

food on the table that week. With this added stress, parents are more likely to take it out on the

children. Kids are loud and they are messy and they can be very rowdy. When a parent doesn't

know how to handle their anger and their stress they can take it out on the closest person. In

households with children, unfortunately the child is the closest person who won't fight back. This

is part of why stress can lead to a cycle of child abuse.

2. In daycare center A, the “teachers” had little to no previous experience or training, where as in

daycare center C, they were highly educated. In A the children experienced adults who were

simply making sure they weren’t harmed and in C they were teaching them and caring for them.

As C taught them and cared for them, they treated them as children but with respect and doing

this helps to form better relationships with the children compared to A where the children had no

say in anything. Daycare center A is low income families, the parents of these children are

simply trying to get by and make it to work and aren’t able to afford a better daycare. Because of

this, the socialization that the children receive is minimal, and there is a good chance that they

receive the same socialization at home. The stress that comes along with being low income

means less socialization at home because the parents are doing many things including working

multiple jobs. In daycare center C, the teachers worked with the children to teach them schooling

and manners. In higher class homes, these things are expected.
