3. Safety information
Transport and set-up
You may transport the device in motor-powered vehicles both standing up or on its side. If the device is
transported to its set-up location on its side, you may commission the device one hour after set-up at the ear-
liest. This allows the refrigerant to become correctly distributed in the refrigerant circuit again.
Note during transport and set-up that some devices are top-heavy. If the inclination angle is too great (greater
than 10 degrees), there is a risk of tipping!
Always transport the device on a pallet to prevent the (model-specific) defrost water receptacle from sustaining
damage!
Set up the device in a dry, well-ventilated location away from sources of heat. All freezers fulfil climate category
SN and can therefore be operated at ambient temperatures of +10°C to +32°C. All refrigerators fulfil climate
category SN and ST, and can therefore be operated at ambient temperatures of +10°C to +38°C.
Ensure that children cannot access the device. After you have successfully set up the device, remove the key
from the door lock to prevent staff becoming locked in or suffocated.
Do not leave packaging material unattended. Plastic foil, plastic bags, cardboard packaging, polystyrene, etc.
can become dangerous toys for children. Danger of suffocation!
The device must stand in a fixed and level position. On devices with adjustable feet, adjust these feet to suit the
floor.
The connection cable must not contain kinks or be trapped. You must not operate devices with a faulty con-
nection cable! If this is the case, contact customer services.
The device must be sufficiently ventilated. The device will not function without sufficient ventilation. Fire haz-
ard!
o Do not set up devices immediately adjacent to one another. This applies in particular to FROSTER
units. Minimum clearance: 2 cm.
Page 3
o On devices with a refrigerating machine installed underneath, adhere to the minimum wall clearance
as designated by the spacer. Never cover the ventilation slits.
o On some models, inlet air and exhaust air flows through the ventilation slits at the front. Therefore, do
not block or face these slits with objects.
o Do not cover devices with a refrigerating machine located at the top.
o If the device is to be installed, this work must be carried out by qualified personnel only. Always en-
sure that the refrigerating machine is sufficiently ventilated. Enquire at KIRSCH, if necessary.

Commissioning and operation
Do not commission a device that has been damaged during transport or set-up. If in doubt, contact the supplier.
Do not damage parts of the refrigerant circuit. If the evaporator pipes are pierced by a sharp object, other pipes
become kinked, or the surface finish is scratched off, refrigerant spraying out can cause eye injuries.
o The electrical connection conditions must match those stated on the type plate of the refrigerating
machine.
o KIRSCH refrigerating machines and freezers are ready-to-plug-in devices, operate at 220-240 volts
and at 50 or 60 Hz alternating current, depending on the model. Special designs that deviate from
these specifications are available; refer to the type plate in the upper right of the interior!
o Connect the device using a correctly installed plug with an earth connection.
o Fuse: 10 amp.
o KIRSCH refrigerating machines and freezers are designed according to protection class I.
Cleaning
o Clean the interior and exterior of the device before commissioning and at regular intervals thereafter.
o Before you clean the device, switch it off and pull out the mains plug.
o Cleaning water must not enter the electrical components.
o Clean the interior container and equipment with warm water and some mild detergent. Cleaning
agents containing sand or acid, or chemical solutions are unsuitable.
o Wipe down the door seal with clear water and rub this dry thoroughly.
o You can remove drawers and wire shelves for cleaning.
o Treat white-coated exterior housing with a paint cleaner and care product. Treat stainless-steel ex-
terior housing with a stainless-steel cleaner and care product.
o To ensure that the refrigerating machine's performance is not affected by dust, clean the condenser
with a brush or vacuum cleaner as appropriate according to the build-up of dust but at least every 6
months. The condenser is a black wire part, located on the external back wall or in the motor area,
depending on the model.
Maintenance
o KIRSCH refrigerating machines and freezers are maintenance-free.
o However, observe the prior section entitled "Cleaning".
Repair
o Repairs and modifications must be carried out by expert personnel only. Improper repairs and modi-
fications can lead to severe personal injuries (e.g. electric shocks) or damage to property (e.g. fire,
damage of goods to be cooled).
o If the device malfunctions, switch it off and pull out the mains plug.
Page 5
Observe the maximum load of the drawers and shelves: 100 kg/m² compliant with DIN 58345 / 58371 / 58375.
If the load-bearing system breaks as a result of these loads being exceeded, this can lead to personal injuries
depending on the goods being cooled!
Store the keys for the door and control where only authorised staff can access them.
The emission sound pressure level on all models does not exceed 70 dB(A)
Temporary decommissioning
Leave the door open in order to avoid the formation of odours and mould inside. Observe the section entitled
"Cleaning".
Remove the key from the door lock and store it out of the reach of children.
Also observe the points entitled "Switching on" and "Switching off" in section 5"Commissioning".
Immediately render obsolete devices unusable. Pull out the mains plug and disconnect the connection cable.
Remove or destroy locks to prevent children from locking themselves in while playing, as this could be fatal.
Remove the door, if possible.
If your model is equipped with a battery, dispose of this in the proper manner at the designated disposal point.
Ensure that the battery is not damaged, burnt or short-circuited. Risk of explosion!
Contact your municipal waste disposal office for details of how to dispose of the device correctly. Ensure that
the refrigerating machine's pipes do not become damaged.

o To delete the minimum memory, hold down button (15) and button (5). "----" is shown in the display
(4).
o The maximum memory starts after the set target temperature has been achieved for the first time, or
after 2 hours, at the latest.
Battery for network-independent warning (not standard equipment, depending on the model design):
o Serves the warning facility for approx. 72 hours in the case of power failure. Min/max values are
recorded in the case of power failure.
o The battery is monitored by charging automation.
o When the "Acc" error message is displayed, replace the battery.
Page 8
o The contact switches in alarm state (see section 6). The "door open" alarm is not forwarded.
Loading:
o When the operating temperature has been achieved, you may load the device.
o After the door has been closed, a vacuum is created in the interior due to the forced-in external air
cooling down. Expect increased resistance when you open the door; therefore, open the door care-
fully.
Drawers and wire shelves must be height adjusted (possible on models with notch rails):
o Pull out the drawer until its end stop, lift up at the front and remove. Fold up the lateral rails and pull
them out of the notched slots. If you insert the guide rails, ensure that the clevis-type nibs are fitted at
the same height on all four notch rails. Observe the notch-rail designation for this purpose.
o Wire shelf with rails: The wire shelves do not have a hinge, and can be removed from the guide rails
without you lifting them. Offset the guide rails as previously described.
o Wire shelf with overlays: Lift the wire shelf and remove it. Offset the overlays as described for the
guide rails.
Defrost:
o The device defrosts automatically every 12 hours. The defrost water is directed into an externally
®
located pan and evaporates there automatically (excluding LABEX models or models with the op-
tional defrost water pan for manual emptying).
o If your device has the "additional defrosting" function, you can start defrosting by holding down but-
tons (2) and (16) (for a minimum of four seconds), depending on the model.
o The diode is illuminated during defrosting (14).
®
o On LABEX models or devices that are optionally supplied without defrost-water evaporation, you
must inspect and manually empty the defrost-water tank regularly.
Information
®
FROSTER-MED-95 and FROSTER-LABEX -96 do not have an automatic defrost function. You must defrost these
models manually if excessive ice accumulates.
Page 9
Set humidity (MED models only, excluding FROSTER-MED models and MED-100):
o Settings: low humidity (approx. 65%) or high humidity (approx. 90%)
o Turn the key switch (1) to "P" position before you make the setting. Hold down button (2) (for a
minimum of four seconds) to select the humidity. Then return the key switch to "1" position.
o If you set "high humidity", the diode is illuminated (13)
Information
If you set "high humidity", the circulation fan in the interior is in constant operation and switches off only if you open the
door. If you set "low humidity", the circulation fan stops for a short time each time the refrigerating machine comes to a
standstill.
To reach the lowest possible temperature quickly: "Superfrost" (all FROSTER-LABO models, as
®
FROSTER-LABEX -96 and FROSTER-MED-95:
o If the function is available, push button (2). The diode (13) is illuminated and the refrigerating machine
is in permanent operation
o Set the lower temperature warning limit to a sufficiently low level before you set Superfrost.
o Superfrost automatically switches off after 12 hours.
o On devices with the interior light option, the light switches on automatically when you open the door.
o On BL models with glass door, you can switch permanent lighting on and off by pushing button (16).
6. Alarms
Your KIRSCH refrigerating machine is equipped with alarm functions. The alarm is triggered visually and audibly by
the control unit. You are also able to forward alarms via a remote warning contact; e.g. to a KIRSCH GSM module
(optional) that sends the alarm message by text message.
o Push button (5) to switch off the alarm sound. If the cause of the alarm is not rectified, the alarm
sounds again every 30 minutes.
o If the alarm sound is not switched off, but the error rectifies itself, the alarm no longer sounds.
However, the display continues to flash. This indicates that an alarm had been triggered.
Push button (5) to stop the display from flashing.
o The display shows the temperature of the goods to be cooled, not the air temperature in the interior. A
sensor is used for this purpose, taking measurements on an electronic time-delay.
Page 10
®
"Door open" alarm: (excluding LABEX -285/-335/-465)
o If you open the door for longer than 60 seconds, the audible alarm sounds, and the error message
"E5" is displayed in the display (4) in alternation with the temperature.
o After you close the door, the visual and audible alarm messages are cancelled.
o If you intentionally open the door for a longer period, push button (5) to switch off the alarm sound.
o The "door open" alarm is not forwarded via the floating contact.
Information
®
The "door open" alarm is not forwarded by the remote warning contact. FROSTER-MED-95 and FROSTER-LABEX -96
do not have a "door open" alarm.
Power-failure warning (as standard on MED, BL and FROSTER-BL models; otherwise optional):
o In the case of a power failure, an audible alarm sounds, the remote warning contact is triggered and
the display (4) switches off and on to save power. During the switch-on phase, the display (4) shows
the current temperature in alternation with the error message "PF" ('power failure').
o The audible and visual alarm remains after the power failure until you acknowledge the alarm by
pushing button (5).
o You can acknowledge the audible alarm during the power failure by pushing button (5). The visual
alarm is then displayed until power is re-established.
o If you acknowledge the alarm and power supply is not re-established within 30 minutes, an audible
alarm is activated again. The monitoring unit remains in operation for approx. 72 hours.
Alarm in the case of defective display and control unit: If the display unit and control unit are out of action, an
audible alarm from the control board is output only. You can switch off this alarm by pulling out the mains plug
only.
o The temperature of the goods to be cooled and not the air temperature in the interior is shown in the
display. A sensor is used for this purpose, taking measurements on an electronic time-delay.
o To test alarm triggering when warning limits are achieved, you can switch off the electronic delay for
approx. 10 minutes.
o Start test function (air measurement):
Turn key switch (1) to "P" position. Hold down buttons (6) and (10) simultaneously for
approx. 4 seconds until a decimal point appears on the left-hand side of the display (4) and
flashes – the test function is starting.
Test the alarm triggering function by manually warming or cooling the black monitoring
sensor in the interior until the warning limits are achieved. For example, you can use your
fingers or coolant spray.
If the warning limits are exceeded, an audible signal sounds, the remote warning contact is
triggered, and the temperature flashes in the display (4) in alternation with the error message
(see "Error and status messages").
The test function is complete when the 10 minutes have elapsed, or when you return the key
(1) to "1" position. Display (4) shows the original temperature again before you started the
test function.
Also observe the information in section 8 entitled "Error and status messages".
Page 11
7. Modifying temperature setting and temperature warning limits:
The values for the operating temperature and temperature warning limits are set at the factory in such a way as to
ensure compliance with the valid DIN standard for the model. You must not change these values. The following
table also contains these values. The refrigerating machine requires a certain amount of time to cool down to the set
temperature. You can read the course of the temperature on the digital display or by using optional temperature
documentation (e.g. KIRSCH PC-KIT). The operating temperature is automatically maintained irrespective of
changing ambient temperatures. The condition for this is that the ambient temperature is at least 3°C above the set
interior temperature.
WARNING!
Improper modifications to the temperature setting and warning limits can lead to irreparable damage to the
goods to be cooled! If in doubt, contact our customer services!
o Turn key switch back to "1" position. The current interior temperature is displayed again. The set
target temperature is saved automatically. This temperature is maintained even if there is a power
failure or the device is switched off.
o Upper temperature warning limit: Hold down button (6) and push buttons (3) and (15) to make the
desired setting.
o Lower temperature warning limit: Hold down button (10) and push buttons (3) and (15) to make the
desired setting. Then return the key switch (1) to "1" position.
Information
On blood bank refrigerators, set the upper temperature warning limit at least 2°C higher, and the lower temperature limit
at least 2°C lower than the set interior temperature.
On all other devices, set the upper temperature warning limit at least 3°C higher, and the lower temperature limit at least
3°C lower than the set interior temperature.

Innovation and quality – since 1865
Since 1865, we have been synonymous with high-quality products fulfilling the most stringent standards and providing a
high level of reliability. Our products are used all over the world: from the tropics right up to the Arctic. The experience we
gain is fed continuously into our product innovations. Our policy of manufacturing our own housings enables us to
coordinate the components of our refrigerators and freezers optimally with one another. This has enabled us to become
a world leader in terms of temperature stability.
