Should Students Evaluate Their Teachers?

The Philippines is a third-world country and also a currently developing country. One of
the systems that should be developed is Education. Nowadays, as we are in the midst of a global
pandemic, education is at the top of people's concerns. Most schools consider the interaction
between students and teachers as an important role in the teaching process. Some people tend to
think that schools should ask students to evaluate their teachers while others fear that it will bring
about some harmful effects to both teachers and students. In my point of view, I agree because I
believe that the evaluation has more advantages than disadvantages.

First and foremost, the students are the only direct receiver of knowledge and lesson from
their teachers. When teachers give their courses, they address to students. As we all know, the
work of teachers does not consist only in giving lessons, but to help students in their studies also
to communicate with them and advise them on the educational subjects. As stated by (Taylor and
Tyler), evaluation can shift the teacher effectiveness distribution through a different mechanism
by improving teacher skill, effort, or both in ways that persist long-run.

Evaluating teachers is one of the most effective ways of improving the quality of
education because teachers have a better understanding of the capacity of each student.
Therefore, this is a golden opportunity for teachers to change their methods of teaching or to
make suggestions with school change timetable. According to (Wagoner & O’Hanlon, 1968)
teacher’s attitudes about the evaluation process will influence how a teacher will benefit from the
evaluation process. So that a favorable attitude will allow for greater benefits from the evaluation
by allowing the teacher to become aware of specific strengths and weaknesses. Ideally, teachers
will improve teaching performance as a result of a positive evaluation experience. Teachers may
find the evaluation process produces a threatening feeling while others see the evaluation as a
challenge to receive an award. If the teachers know that they will be evaluated by their students,
they will endeavor to make their students more satisfied with them. They will be more creative in
the way they teach and make the students understand better their lessons. Therefore, the more the
students are satisfied with their teachers, the better the teachers are evaluated. Teacher
evaluations are used to measure teacher performance with two potential purposes, to identify
quality educators and to identify professional development.

But there are also disadvantages of evaluating teachers. Students have an instinctive
dislike to some teachers basing on their attitude and behaviors. When a negative attitude
established by the extra work, feelings of someone looking over your shoulder, and having your
values and beliefs questioned may cause a person to have a negative perception of an evaluation
system. Poor attitudes and perceptions may cause feelings of displeasure, fear, and a sense of
unfair practices. When individuals are not feeling safe and secure, they tend to hold ill feelings
towards the individuals performing teacher evaluations.
It’s a good idea for schools to ask students to evaluate their teachers. This informs
teachers of how students react both to their teaching methods and to them as individuals.
Teachers can weigh the criticisms and change what they think needs to be changed. Praise from
students is also valuable. It can reinforce teachers’ opinions about how they’re teaching and give
them confidence. The teacher who gives all that they can and deals with their students in the best
way have nothing to worry about. This approach gives more importance to students and it will
show more positive results in their education. Teacher evaluation students provide offers an
excellent insight into the current effectiveness of a teacher out in the field. When student
evaluations of teachers are given regularly, the quality of the educational experience is sure to
improve for both the teacher and the students.
