CHAPTER 3: DISTILLATION

PART 1

Question 1

A solution is composed of 1.40 mol cyclohexane (Po = 97.6 torr) and 2.50 mol acetone (Po = 229.5 torr).

a) Calculate the total vapour pressure of the solution.

b) Determine the composition of the vapour (in terms of mole fraction).

Question 2

Heptane and octane form an ideal solution. At 373 K, the vapour pressures of the two liquid components
are 105.2 kPa and 46.8 kPa respectively. The solution contains of 26.0 g of heptanes and 35 g of octane.
Determine:

a) Partial pressure of heptane and octane.

b) Total vapour pressure of the mixture.

Question 3

Table 1 shows the vapor-liquid equilibrium data for methanol-water system at constant pressure.

a) Sketch the boiling point diagram for the system and determine:

i. the boiling point temperature of the solution with 40 % water.

ii. the boiling point temperature of the solution with 70 % methanol.
iii. the equilibrium composition of liquid and vapor at 80oC.
iv. the mole fraction of water in liquid phase at 75oC.

b) Sketch the vapor-liquid equilibrium diagram for the system.
