1. Two flash drums are connected in series, both at 1 atm. The liquid outlet of the first drum
is sent as feed to the second drum. The feed to the first drum is a mixture of methanol and
water with 55 mol % methanol and flows at 10000 kmol/h. The second drum operates
with V/F = 0.7 and has a liquid exit composition of 25 mol % methanol. Determine the
following. See the accompanying methanol-water T-x-y data to help you solve this
problem.
a. Fraction vaporized in the first drum.
b. Mole fractions of all streams leaving and entering the two flash drums.
c. Temperatures of the two drums.

2. Find the solutions to the following equations using the guess/check or battleship method.
Show all steps/iterations!
a. x2 + 3*(x+0.5)-1 + ex = 32
b. x + ln x = 0
c. ex − [sin(x)]2 = 2. x is in radians.
3. A mixture of methane, ethane, propane, and butane are to be flashed in a drum. The
temperature of the drum is 27 oC and the pressure of the drum is 1379 kPa. The following
feed data is available.
Feed zi Ki
Methane 0.3 12
Ethane 0.2 2.5
Propane 0.35 0.8
Butane 0.15 0.24
4. A flash drum is used to separate a mixture of ethylene (0.05 mole fraction), isobutane
(0.1 mole fraction), and n-octane (0.85 mole fraction). The temperature of the drum is
170 oC and the pressure is 400 kPa.
5. A 100 kmol/h feed to a flash drum is a mixture of 30 mol % n-butane and 70 mol % n-
hexane. Assume V/F = 0.4 and Tdrum = 100 oC. Find Pdrum (or Ptotal), yi’s, and xi’s.
Hint: Use Raoult’s law to get K-values and Antoine’s equation to estimate vapor
pressures. Solve the Rachford-Rice equation for Ptotal to get the solution.
