APPENDIX A

Refer to the decision flow chart overleaf.

All steel demountable/ transportable offices (such as site offices, crib rooms, production offices, etc.) may be
considered a safe shelter wherever;
 A minimum of two (2) local Earth Electrodes (min 1.8m x 15mm) are installed at opposed corners of the
structure, and well away from trafficable areas;
 Suitably rated (minimum 50kA) surge diverters are installed at the local distribution board, and wired each
Phase to Neutral, (and possibly wired Neutral to Earth if applicable);
 Suitably rated surge suppressors are installed on ALL incoming and outgoing copper telephone pairs (if
applicable); and
 Suitably rated surge suppressors are installed on incoming coaxial radio cabling (if applicable).

Metal shipping containers are considered safe shelters if:

 Metal screening is installed over all openings;
 Lighting is battery powered (not AC-powered);
 Sufficient airflow, water supply and seating is provided; and
 The structure is deliberately earthed or situated on a conductive surface.

APPENDIX B

A LPS for a building comprises lightning rods or air terminals on the roof (to intercept the lightning strike), heavy
gauge down-conductor cables (to conduct the discharge current safely to earth), earth termination networks/ground
rods buried in the soil or foundation (to dissipate the current into the earth) and surge protective devices (SPDs). A
LPS must be designed, installed and tested to meet the requirements of AS/NZS 1768:2007 and NFPA 780 by a suitably
qualified person.
