The Colonus Effect”

As a tropical land, the country Philippines is considered rich due to its immense
amount of natural resources which is why numerous foreign countries have
colonized it. And the notable Spanish wanderer Ferdinand Magellan was the
preface of our colonial history, the birth of the Spanish era. For 333 years, the
Philippines was under the Spanish rule, did it only bring hardships to Filipinos
or is it what shaped us to become who we are?
After pondering about the topic for this paper, I asked my sister about the
positive impacts of the Spanish ruling present she notices. And her first
statement was that we are able to establish a political system competent
enough for a united country. But based in the early history of the Philippines,
early civilizations were present when Magellan arrived called barangays which
consisted of social and political organization, even trading was observed
especially civilizations near water; this is one of the reasons why Spain
colonized the country in the first place. But for me, all they did was spread
their blood among the government officials in order to assert power and
governance.
After, she said that we were able to establish connections and be included in
the world, which was the second reason as to why the Spanish colonized us, to
acquire a share in the spice trade and form connections to China and Japan.
But these was already observed in the early history of the Philippines, the
civilizations have already established a trading system both inside and outside
the country using the barter system and is proven thru the items used by the
native Filipinos acquired only on the neighboring country such as silk.
Lastly, she said that we were able to have a spiritual identity which is a huge
factor as to why Filipinos have the good attitude and strong beliefs known
around the world. I do agree that our conversion became the birth of our love
to God, but native Filipinos have their own religion already, worshipping
different gods and goddesses thru anitos and anitas. The Spanish did not make
us believe and perform conversion; they forced the religion unto us and
executed the old religion among the people who decided not to convert.
It is irrefutable that the Spanish introduced quality education and literature,
and made us united as a country under their control, but the hundred years of
literal slavery and of the system present in the country is absolute. For me, all
the Spanish did is prevent our original country from developing by its own
capability, extinguish the old identity of our nation, and execute excessive
control on the native people and exploit our natural resources. We should
remember that our history is what shapes us but we should also remember
that our freedom was robbed definitely. Because as Sidney Hook said,
“Tolerance always has limits, and it cannot tolerate what is itself actively
intolerant.”
