Preface
This module aims to answer the need of our learners for a quality education in
the new normal amid pandemic. Thorough discussions for the various topics and
activities were made to ensure quality learning through modular approach. An enabling
activity is provided to motivate the learners and serve as a springboard for the topic. The
read and learn portion elucidates the topic at hand so learners will have the scaffold for
the activities that will follow. A series of activities follows to test and apply what they
have learned. The feedback/ reflection portion in turn will let the instructor know how
the learners fare in the given topic.

vi
Acknowledgement

This endeavour was made possible by the faculty members handling Purposive
Communication from the General Education Department and the Languages and
Literature Department who collaboratively work to come up with a module to ensure
that quality education will not be sacrificed in the midst of changes in the academe
brought by the pandemic.

This has come to fruition with the support of the dean of College of Arts and
Sciences, Dr. Fatima Socorro M. Quianzon and the heads of the aforementioned
departments, Prof. Sarah Cajipo and Dr. Glenda B. Tupaz for their constant reminder
and prodding to come up with the best for our learners to continue educating them

To the Holy Triune God for the gift of knowledge, for with Him, everything is

INTRODUCTION

Communication plays an important role in order for human to survive. There

is a need for people to communicate in order to achieve what is needed and wanted
to accomplish. For example, for babies to be fed or changed, they communicate thru
crying thus this alerts their parents check to on them and give what they need. On the
other hand, a teacher may use his mobile phone to send emails to his students
reminding them of their projects. In both cases, the baby and teacher depend on
communication for them to accomplish their ends.

Module 1 covers six lessons. Lesson 1 will cover communication process and
a thorough discussions of the principles of communication as these are blended with
communication ethics. While Lesson 2 contains an in-depth lecture on
communication and globalization. These two underlying foundations were fused to
describe the development of communication in the twenty first century. On the other

READ AND LEARN

Communication has been man’s tool to better understand the world, to share
notions and thoughts about nonsense and relevant topics as well. Now, let us try
to discuss the nature of communication

People Communication is a process Generally defined as the

clear so as not to
create ambiguity in
the communication
process. Now let us
try to look at the
levels of language in
communication.

Communication and the levels of language

Communication and language are inseparable. Through language, you are

able to put together your thoughts through words. You use language to
communicate like sharing ideas, expressing feelings, transferring thoughts, and do
others.

The two levels of language are denotative language (DL) and connotative
language (CL). The former refers to the dictionary meaning of a word or its lexicon
while the latter refers to the suggestive meaning of a word or its metaphoric
meaning. Metaphoric because it stands for something else based on its usage in
certain contexts. The example below explains the distinction:

1. She looked up and saw that the heaven is

dim.
2. She looked up and saw her heaven.

In sentence (1) heaven may refer to the sky or its DL meaning whereas in
sentence (2), heaven may mean happiness or its CL.

4
It is important that an individual knows the context of the language so that
understanding will be successfully achieved in certain conversations or discourses.
Both the DL and CL are important in any communication. These levels of language
make you understand certain communicative contexts. Communication and
language are intertwined. Again, these are the levels of language in
communication. Later, in our discussion, the types of communication will be given
emphasis.

Types of Communication
Communication is an important aspect in human life, it is an avenue
where they can exchange their thoughts and ideas to build a better relationship.
There are various ways how people can communicate successfully.

COMMUNICATION

VERBAL NON VERBAL WRITTEN VISUAL

Communication involves the exchange of ideas, feelings, perceptions or

even command between two or more people with an intention of understanding
each other. There are four types of communications as follows:

Verbal Communication is a way of transmitting ideas or messages

through word symbols via orally. This involves a face to face interaction, phone
conversation, meetings, and speeches or even in conferences and seminars. It does
not only limits to one on one communication, but it also applies to multiple
receivers.

6
Non-Verbal Communication on the other hand means sending messages
to a receiver using other means other than spoken language. This uses but not
limited to glance, gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact among others.

Written Communication involves the use of text or words encoded or

hand-written through a form of a memo, letters reports, on-line chats, short
messages or SMS or electronic emails.

Visual Communication uses images, graphs, charts, logos or maps to

convey ideas or messages.

The discussions above show us the different ways by which we

communicate. Remember that we communicate through words (verbal) through
tone (para verbal) and through our expressions and gestures. In business, the least
that we use is verbal but the most is non-verbal while in-between, we use para-
verbal.

How We Communicate
VERBAL=7%
Words (what we say)

PARA-VERBAL=38%
Tone (how we say it)

NON-VERBAL=55%
Our expressions and
actions

Basic Components of a Communication Process

ENCODE DECODE

MEDIUM

SENDER RECEIVER

BARRIER
DECODE ENCODE

In the communication process, it requires a sender, message, the medium

of communication and the receiver. The encoder conceptualizes the message

while the decoder interprets it. The feedback component gauges whether or not

the communication was successful or a failure.

The communication process involves elements as follows:

❖ Sender is the speaker or source of the message

❖ Encode is the process of transferring the message from the sender

❖ Message is the idea or information

❖ Medium is the means of delivering the message

❖ Decode is the process of interpreting the message

❖ Receiver is the recipient of the message

❖ Feedback is the response or reaction of the receiver

Barriers are the interference in the encoding or decoding of the message.

This affects the clarity and understanding of a message.

9
Barriers to Communication

Crucial to understanding communication are the barriers which may

impede understanding between interlocutors, or between and among individuals

in a communicative context. These are categorized as organizational barriers,

individual barriers and others

https://thebusinesscommunication.com/types-of-communication-barriers/

A better grasp of these barriers can help us somehow alleviate problems

that may arise if these were not considered. Further, these, too, can help us counter

and prepare for whatever barrier may arise given certain situations.

10
TASK TIME

Identify five situations at home or at school (online setting) where the

communication process takes place. Identify the elements of communication

and write your answers on the table and submit it via email.

Communication Ethics

❖ Uphold Integrity is being honest with your opinion and an accurate judgement.

status, affiliations and privacy of others.

said.

❖ Encourage access to communication means giving others the opportunity to

express their ideas and feelings.

❖ Be unbiased is being fair and just. Accepting opinions and views of other people

without being biased.

❖ Be accountable of your actions is being responsible of your actions.

11
