Role-play
1. Greeting someone you know
When you greet people you know, you can say…
▻ Hello Hi Hey
▻ Good morning/ Good afternoon/ Good evening
▻ How do you do?  How do you do?
▻ Long time no see./ It’s been a while
▰ This is often followed by asking how well they feel such as “How are
you?”
2. Asking “How are you?”
You can say, “How are you?” in several
ways.
▰ How are you? How is your life?
▰ How are you doing? How is everything?
▰ How is it going? What are you up to?
▰ How are things with you? How have you been?

3. Replying “How are you?”


If you want to reply the greetings, consider
using the following expressions.
I’m fine/ I’m O.K. I’m doing really well.
I’m good. I’m hanging in there.
Wonderful. Nothing much.
Very well, thanks. I’m blessed.
Kru
Pretty good. Same old things.

Not too bad. I’m really busy.
4. Farewell
Yeah, all right. Couldn’t be better.
I’m alive. I would be lying if I said I’m fine.

▰ Have a nice weekend. / Have a nice time.
▰ I have to go now. See you around.
▰ Well, I think I should get back to work.
▰ I’d better get on. (Continue working)
Examples:
Harry: Hello, Jinny. How are you?
Jinny: Hello, Harry. Pretty good.
What about you?
Harry: Not too bad.
Robert: Long time no see, Harris. How’s it going?
Harris: Yeah, it’s been a while. I’d be lying if I said I’m fine.
Robert: What’s the matter? Are you not feeling well?
Harris: Of course, I’ve a bit of a cold.
Robert: Well, I think I should get back to work. Get well soon.

1. Suggestion

2. Invitation
▰ Would you like to finish this first?
▰ Would you be able to attend the event?
▰ Shall we meet at 6? / Let’s meet at 6.
▰ Do you want to … / Could you … / Can you … / Would you care to
…?
▻ Ex. I’m busy at 2 p.m. Can you make it 3?
3. Asking for Help
▰ Would you give me a hand?
▰ Will you help me?
▰ Could you lend me your car?
▰ Do you mind if I borrow your car?
▰ Do you mind turning on the TV for me?
▰ May I speak to Dr. Stephenson?
4. Saying “Yes”
