I. Objectives
At the end of 60 minutes, the students will be able to:
a. identify quadratic functions in general form and in standard form.
b. rewrite quadratic functions y = a(x – h)2 + k in the form y = ax2 + bx + c
and vice-versa.
c. appreciate the lesson on quadratic functions in solving real-life problems.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Transforming Standard Form to its General Form
Concept: Transforming a quadratic function from the form f(x) = a(x-h)2 + k to the
form f(x) = ax2 + bx + c, you should expand the square of the binomial, multiply by
a and add k, then simplify by combining similar terms.

F. Review
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Response

- Before we start our new lesson, let us review

first of what we have discussed yesterday which
was about Transforming General Form to its
Standard or Vertex Form.

- Did you remember our lesson yesterday, class? - Yes, Ma’am.

- Now, rewrite the following quadratic function

from general to standard form using completing
the square for the first example and solving the
values of h and k for the second one. Write your
answer and solution in your notebook.

1. y = x2+2x-1
2. y = 2x2+4x+5

Answer: y = (x+1)2-2
Answer: y = 2(x+1)2+3

G. Motivation
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Response

- What have you observed from the two solutions? - Karen: The two solutions resulted to
the same answer. Thus, a quadratic
function in the form f(x) = ax2 + bx +
c can be transformed in the form f(x)
= a(x – h)2 + k by completing the
−b
square or the relation h = and k =
2a
- Yes, correct. 4 ac −b
2

4a
- Now, how will you transform a quadratic
function in the form f(x) = a(x – h) 2 + k to the
standard form f(x) = ax2 + bx + c?
- Iza: By completing the square?
- No.

- No. - Leoneza: By using quadratic

formula?

H. Lesson Proper
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Response
- For you to know how to rewrite quadratic
function from standard form to its general form,
let us observe how it is done based on the
example.
Rewrite the equation y=3 (x − 2)2 +4 in the
general form y=ax 2+ bx+ c.
Solution:

y=3 (x − 2)2 +4 Expand the square of

the binomial.

y=3 (x¿ ¿2 − 4 x +4)+ 4 ¿ Multiply the result by

the value of a.
2
y=3 x − 12 x +12+4 Combine the similar
terms.

y=3 x 2 − 12 x +16 General form

- Yes, Ma’am.
- Did you understand, class?

a. Activity

- Now, for activity, transform the equation

2
y=− 2(x − 5) +50 into the general form. Write
your answer in your notebook.

b. Reporting

- Who can solve the given equation on the board?

(Crislyn raises her hand) 2

y=− 2( x − 5) +50
- Yes, Crislyn, kindly write your answer and y=− 2(x ¿¿ 2+ 10 x +25)+50 ¿
2
solution of the given equation. y=− 2 x −20 x − 50+50
y=− 2 x 2 −20 x +100

- Is the answer of Crislyn correct?

- Karen: Crislyn was wrong of adding
(Karen raises her hand) the -50 and +50. Because -50 + 50 is
0.
- So, what is now the final answer? - Karen: The final answer would be
2
y=− 2 x −20 x
- Yes, correct.

c. Drills

- Now, let’s have a group activity. In your group,

rewrite the equation y=5 ( x+ 4)2 −3 in the form
2
y=ax + bx+ c by following the steps below.

Expand the square of

the binomial.

Multiply the result by

the value of a.
Combine the similar
terms.

Your final answer

- Answer it within 6 minutes. You may now start

answering with your group.

(After 6 minutes)

- Time is up, class. Go back to your proper seats

and pass your paper.

Expected answer:
Expand the square of y=5 ( x+ 4)2 −3
the binomial.

Multiply the result by y=5 x 2 +40 x +80 −3

the value of a.
Combine the similar 2
y=5 x +40 x +77
terms.

Your final answer 2

y=5 x +40 x +77

I. Application
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Response

- For your application, give at least 3 examples of

real-life situations where you can apply the
concept of transforming from standard to general
form of quadratic function. Write your answer in a
½ sheet of paper.
- Did you understand, class? - Yes, Ma’am.

- Okay, I’ll give you 5 minutes to answer.

(After 5 minutes)

- Time is over, class. Pass your paper forward.

J. Generalization
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Response

- Did you really understand our lesson today,

class?

- Now, if you really understand and listened to my

discussion, how do we transform standard to
general form of quadratic function?

(Leoneza raises her hand)

- Yes, Leoneza. - To rewrite or transform a quadratic

function from the form f(x) = a(x-h)2
+ k to the form f(x) = ax2 + bx + c,
expand the square of the binomial,
multiply by a and add k, then simplify
by combining similar terms.
- Yes, thst’s correct!

IV. Evaluation
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Response

- Now, let us have an assessment.

In your assessment, you are going to transform the
following quadratic function to
y = ax2 + bx + c.

- Did you understand, class? - Yes, Ma’am.

- Okay, I’ll give you 15 minutes to answer.

1. y = 3(x – 2)2 + 5
2. y = 5(x - 9)2 + 1
3. y = -5(x - 3)2 + 2
4

4. y = 7 (x – 1)2 + 3
6
5. y = 7 (x - 7) 2 – 1
Expected answers:
1. y = 3x2-12x+17
2. y = 5x2-90x+406
3. y = -5x2+30x-43
4 2 8 17
4. y = − x + x+
7 7 7
6 2 84
5. y = x − x + 41
7 7

(After 15 minutes)

- Time is up, class. Kindly pass your paper

forward.

V. Assignment
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Response

- For your assignment, you are going to answer

this given situation:
Situation: Consider a rectangular garden whose
width is (x + 2) cm and whose length is (x + 5)
cm. How do you find the area of the garden?

- Did you understand, class? - Yes, Ma’am.

Expected Answer:
The area of the rectangle can be solved through its
formula A=length x width.
To solve the problem, we will substitute the given
values to the formula in finding the area of the
garden.
A = length x width
A = (x+5)(x+2)
y = x2+7x+10

The area of the garden is represented by the

quadratic function y = x2+7x+10 cm2.

- Pass your assignment tomorrow on our time

schedule.
- Did you understand, class? - Yes, Ma’am.

- Thank you for your cooperation, see you

tomorrow.
- Good bye and thank you, Miss
- Good bye, class. Janin!
