Semi – Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 9

Teacher: JOHN BRYLLE F. ACUYAN Quarter: 3rd

School: RAWIS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Time Allotment: 1 Hour (60 Minutes)
Subject: SCIENCE Date:
Grade and Section: 9 - SAMPAGUITA

I. OBJECTIVES:

A. CONTENT STANDARD: Factors that affect climate, and the effects of

changing climate and how to adapt
accordingly.
B. PERFORMANCE Participate in activities that reduce risks and
STANDARD: lessen effects of climate change.
C. LEARNING COMPETENCIES: Explain how different factors affect the
climate of an area (S9ES-IIIe30)
1. differentiate climate from weather;
2. identify factors that affect climate; and
3. give the impact of climate on people’s life.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

A. LESSON: CLIMATE: Factors Affecting Climate
B. REFERENCES: Science – Grade 9 Quarter 3 – Module 10: Climate:
Factors Affecting Climate First Edition, 2020 pp. 1 – 9
C. MATERIALS: PowerPoint Presentation

III. PROCEDURE:
A. DAILY ROUTINE - Prayer (Optional)
- Attendance Check (for Face to Face Classes)
- Greetings
B. MOTIVATION Since the students are from the rural barangays the
teacher will ask them if who among them are child of
farmers or fishermen.
The teacher will ask the students whose parents are
farmers if what is the climate or weather during
planting time and harvesting time. The teacher will
also ask the fishermen’s child if what is the best
climate to catch fish.
(with these I believe that I can motivate the students
to listen because I started with some thing

A. ACTIVITY Activity 1
Title: “Weather or Not”
Direction: For each statement below, write “W” if you
think the statement relates to Weather or “C” if you
think the statement relates to Climate.
Write your answer on the line before the number.

___C__ 1. Average rainfall in the Philippines varies

from 965 mm to 4,064 mm annually.
__W__ 2. It looks like we’ll get rain this week.
__W__ 3. Did you hear about the super typhoon
Yolanda?
__W__ 4. In the Philippines, the coolest month falls in
January with a mean temperature of 25.5 º C and the
warmest month occurs in May with a mean
temperature of 28.3 º C.
___C_ 5. I’m moving to Baguio City from December to
February. How will I know what to take for clothing?

Activity 2
Title: “What Affects Climate?”
Direction:
Write the factors that affect the Climate
1.LATITUDE
The specific north to south grid positions on earth
ranging from 0° at the equator to 90° at the poles.

2. ALTITUDE
It is the height of an area above sea level.

3. TOPOGRAPHY
The natural features or arrangement of an area like
land

4. DISTANCE TO OCEAN
Oceans heat up and cool down much more slowly
than land.

5. OCEAN CURRENTS
Are similar to winds in the atmosphere in that they
transfer significant amounts of heat from Earth’s
equatorial areas to the poles

B. ANALYSIS The teacher will check, elaborate and rationalize the

activities of the students. The lessons that will be
elaborated are as follows:
Weather is a specific event or condition that happens
over a period of hours or days. For example, a
thunderstorm, a snowstorm, and today’s temperature
all describe the weather. Weather is highly variable
day to day, and from one year to the next. For
example, Metro Manila might have a warm December
this year and a much colder December the next. This
kind of change is normal. But when the average
pattern over many years changes, it is now called
climate.
The climate of a place is different when compared to
other. The reasons for these differences can be quite
complex but there are some general factors that can
be identified as affecting climate, these are latitude,
altitude, distance to ocean, topography and ocean
currents.
Latitude: The specific north to south grid positions on
earth ranging from 0° at the equator to 90° at the
poles. Lower latitudes around the equator get the most
sunlight, and as latitude increases temperature
decreases. Large scale ascending (cloudy sky, wet
weather) and descending (clear sky, dry weather)
motion of air is also a function of latitude.
Altitude: It is the height of an area above sea level.
Generally, the higher an area is, the colder the
temperature is. Temperature usually decreases by
1°C for every 100 meters in altitude. Snow can be
found on top of a high mountain even when the
weather is warm in the valleys. Locations at a higher
altitude have colder temperatures.
Distance to oceans or large bodies of water: Areas
that are close to oceans and other large bodies of
water tend to have more moderate climate ranges
between seasons. These areas also tend to have higher
average precipitation than land locked areas, although
there can be exceptions. Landlocked areas are the
locations in the center of large landmasses that tend
to have drier climates and extreme high temperature
annually.
Topography: The natural features or arrangement of
an area like land. The windward side of mountain
ranges tends to receive more precipitation than the
leeward side.
Ocean currents: Currents tend to warm temperatures
of eastern coastal areas and cool temperatures on the
west coast of continents. Ocean currents are similar to
winds in the atmosphere in that they transfer
significant amounts of heat from Earth’s equatorial
areas to the poles and thus play important roles in
determining the climates of coastal regions. In
addition, ocean currents and atmospheric circulation
influence one another.

C. ABSTRACTION The teacher will ask the students if they understand

the lesson, ask some clarifications, review and
summarize some key points of the lesson.
D. APPLICATION The teacher will ask questions to the students on the
impact of climate on People’s Lives.

1. What do people living in hot countries wear?

2. What do people living in very cold countries wear?
3. What kind of houses do they live in?
4. Where do most people choose to live? Why?

Valuing:
The teacher will ask the students if they think they are
lucky with the type of our climate?
- If yes, explain your answer and give examples of
the advantages that we have, same thing if you
think we are not lucky with the type of our
climate.
- Will you choose to live in another country with
different climate?
Why or why not?
(Students’ answers may vary)

IV. EVALUATION:
Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on a ¼ sheet of paper.
1. Which of the following best describes climate?
A. The weather that occurs in the atmosphere within the day
B. The pattern of weather that occurs in a region over a long period of time
C. The pattern of weather that occurs in a region over a short period of time
D. The disturbance in the atmosphere that happens in a long period of time

2. What region receives the least amount of direct sunlight?

A. High latitudes (Polar Region)
B. Middle latitudes (Temperate Region)
C. Low and middle latitudes
D. Low latitudes (Tropical Region)

3. Which of the following you will likely have, if you live farther from an ocean?
A. Little to no temperature change from summer to winter
B. Extreme temperature differences in summer and winter
C. A tropical climate
D. An Arctic climate

4. How does higher altitude affect climate?

A. The closer you get to the equator, the hotter it gets
B. The higher you go above sea level, the colder it gets
C. The farther you travel from the equator, the colder it gets
D. The process by which heat from the sun is trapped near Earth’s surface

5. Why there’s different global climate?

A. Because of the Earth’s titling
B. Because of the windward and leeward
C. Because of the latitude, altitude, distance from the ocean, topography and ocean
currents
D. Because of altitude, latitude, prevailing wind, windward and leeward, and ocean
currents
V. ASSIGNMENT: (Assumes that the students understands the lesson very well)
Directions: Answer the following questions that asks the effects and causes of
greenhouse. Write your answers on your lecture notebooks and we will do a recitation
about your assignment on our next session. (Ref. Science – Grade 9 Quarter 3 – Module
13: Greenhouse First Edition, 2020 pp. 1-5.)
1. How does greenhouse work?
2. What do you think are the reasons for these phenomena?
3. How does carbon dioxide affect global temperature?

ANNOTATION & INTEGRATION:

The lesson that I have imparted to the students is about the weather and
climate and its effects, therefore I integrated my lesson to some social studies and
lesson. For example, in social studies the climate and weather have a great impact to
the economy because if they will know the weather they will choose the possible and
applicable products that should be sold in the different type of climate and weather,
for example during rainy days it is best to sell coffee or jackets so that while during
sunny times it is best to sell cold beverages and go to beaches with this can earn more
profit and in can boost our economy.
