Introduction to Literacy Criticism

Look for any literary text and criticize it by providing the given elements:

Point of View: First Person


Setting: Sahara Desert
Characters: The Aviator, The Rose, Little Prince, Fox, Snake, The Baobabs. The King, The Businessman,
The Vain Man, The Drunkard, The Lamplighter, The Geographer
Plot: The plot starts with an aviator who is a pilot that crashed in the desert. He meets a little boy that
he called ‘little prince’ who want him to draw a picture of a sheep. The little prince is from the planet
called B-612. The little prince tells about what’s happen to his life to the aviator. On the planet of the
little prince, he always pull out seedlings of baobab trees so that these trees don’t grow that much
and cover his little planet. Suddenly, a rose bloom in the planet and the kid take care of it but the rose
demands to the little prince and he become too hard to deal with the rose and he decided to leave to
his little planet. The little prince go through several steroid. He encounters a king who demands
obedience. There’s a man living alone who wants flattery from the prince. He met a drunkard that is
ashamed because of his habit but will not quit. Then, a businessman who makes a claim to all stars
and thus finds it essential to know the exact number of them. He meets a lamplighter, who is
responsible to light the lamps every evening and put the lamp out each morning despite the rapid
speed that the planet spun. In the final planet, the prince comes across a geographer. The little prince
doesn’t know about his planet. The aviator asks the kid to describe his planet. The little prince arrive
in earth where he encounters a snake who tells him it is possible to return him home. He sees a rose
garden and realizes that the rose back home was not as unique as she had informed him. A fox tells
him that they would live together in joy if the boy tamed him. Now the aviator has spent eight days
with the little prince, and his water had run out. The two find a well. The kid wants to return to his
planet. To return, a poisonous snake has to bite him. The prince was missing the next morning, and
the aviator assumes that the little prince has successfully returned to his little planet.
Symbols: The Stars, Water, The Dessert, The Snake
Theme: The theme is expressed when the fox says the secret to the little prince: “It is only
with the heart that one can see rightly: what is essential is invisible to the eye.” It means that what is
essential is not visible and hence we need to pursue our feelings which can never be perceived
through our eyes but can only be felt in the heart.
