Foudation Proposal Final
Question 1
Reflect on your work you've created so far and consider on how your use of materials,
tools, techniques and processes reflect the broader ideas and message that you are interested to
convey. What materials, tools, techniques and processes have you used and how can you employ a
broader range of materials and techniques to explore your theme in Module 3?
I have moved away from the title ‘Little Losses’ and replaced it with ‘Cracks’ as
this theme is looking at the how childhood trauma follows you into adulthood.
I'm interested in using fabrics within the collage, using different colours and
materials to represent different stages of comfort throughout my life,
placed comprehendible way within the piece.
Question 2
Reflect upon the audience and method of dissemination for your work. What does it communicate
and who is it communicating to? What does it offer to the viewer/customer/client and their
lifestyle? Where will the work be situated? How can you market your work?
I feel like this piece can communicate to a wide demographic of people, particularly those
who grew up working class. Not everyone had the opportunities to go on holidays or had
the types of parents who would invite friends over etc. This piece can also go out to anyone
who feels they have experienced a lack of warmth or loving within childhood. It is not just
focused on the physical things missing but the emotional too.
Within this work I’d like to communicate that there are ways to turn your life around and
rectify the things you felt were missing. As an adult, we are more in control of our actions
(generally speaking and to an extent of course) therefore there is the potential to fill those
little holes through creating positive experiences for ourselves. I feel this could offer a
feeling of hope or open the eyes to the opportunity of progression within the viewer. I want
it to expand peoples’ mindsets from solely focusing on the negatives of childhood trauma
into using it to shape you as a person, leading you to more fulfilling experiences whilst still
acknowledging that the trauma happened.
This piece will be made onto a large wood canvas so will be situated on a wall. It would fit
both a gallery space or in a home. I want it to be a comforting piece of artwork that would
fit within a few scenarios. To market the work I would promote it either online through my
art accounts or selling it in a market.
Question 3
We make, design and produce work to be shared, and to elicit a reaction or provoke a response.
What response would you like to provoke in your Audience/Client/Viewer/User? Are you the kind of
designer/artist/producer who aims to disrupt - to entertain or to question? Is your work ironic,
playful, educational or political? Use this space to think about the response of your target audience
on viewing your work - how do you want them to react? What is an ideal response?
Initially my plan was to create a piece called ‘little losses’ which focuses on the
continuous feeling of something missing in your childhood which follows you into
adulthood. Instead, I’m now going to use this but expand on it whilst looking at the
consequences and how this can affect you as an adult. And how though something
may have been missing as a child, this can be responded to in both a negative and
positive way. This piece will follow my responses of this feeling. I have moved
away from the title ‘Little Losses’ and instead changed it to ‘Cracks’, signifying the
damage that has been done that follows you into adulthood.
I'd like this piece to allow the audience to gain a deeper understanding of who I am
through both textural and visual representation. As I build as a person and an artist
through the timeline of the piece, so will the layers and elements added to it. I'd like
the understanding of the viewer to progress as the timeline structure of the art itself
progresses.
Task 1 – Part 1
The theme for this piece will be looking at the consequences of childhood trauma and how
that affects you as an adult. I will be looking at these consequences from both a positive
and negative perspective, showing how this can shape you to be a better person. This
theme is about acknowledging the good within the bad whilst still recognising and
acknowledging that these things happened. The title ‘Cracks’ explains how this trauma
follows you into adulthood and shapes you as a person.
My piece will be made onto a large wood canvas. It is going to multi-layered with 3D
elements combined. I will be using found objects from charity shops and my own
belongings within the piece to represent different things, such as wood, frames and canvas
board to add the 3D element. I am going to use collage, specifically photo collage and merz
collage as these both fit within my theme. It is going to be an autobiographical piece which
starts at childhood and ends at adulthood. There will be an abstracted tone to this artwork.
What skills will you need to develop in order to complete the work?
What will you need to learn? What existing strengths do you have that can help you to succeed?
I need to really focus on both my collage skills and knowledge. There are many different
types of collage yet to explore and learn about. To do this I need to hone in on my artist
research so I can develop my techniques with a bigger set of inspiration behind me.
I feel I have a good sense of colour theory which will play to my advantage. Within
module 2 I really started developing my collage research and practice also, so this I will
develop throughout module 3 using what I’ve already learnt and more.
What will you do to sustain your practice and to develop your motivation,
understanding and confidence?
This focus of this question is your research practice - what has already inspired, informed and
influenced you? How can you push yourself beyond your comfort zone here?
My research has mainly been looking at different collage practices so far. I have found the
works of Robert Rauchenberg and Kurt Schwitters interesting in terms of visuals and
method. I will be taking on some of their ideas and techniques into my final piece.
To expand my research, I will look at more collage practice. I am also going to look into
artists who create work with similar themes or concepts, both within collage but also other
mediums. The latest artist I have been looking into is Sierra Mclean who has created
surrealist work focusing on being on the other side of childhood. Her work has interesting
composition and though portrayed differently to my idea, has a similar theme behind it.
My next artist to research is Greg Sand. I came across his collage work the other day and
think his style perfectly fits in with my theme of missing pieces of self.
I feel this whole piece I am pushing myself beyond my comfort zone as usually I am a
painter, so working with collage materials is a new ball game for me. I also usually am
quite an intuitive artist, but I feel like collage takes a bit more planning to be executed well
so this is giving me space to practice that.
Task 1 – Part 2
This is a short module - and scheduling your activity and planning out your production arc will
help to ensure that you keep the project on track, with time to make a quality artefact for the
exhibition. The best project concept in the world will not lead to a successful outcome without
good, pragmatic planning. Remember, gathering or "procuring" materials will take time - and
supplier availability and high costs will slow you down and impact on your ability to make work.
You must factor this into your schedule. A prohibitively high cost on a particular material or item
may prompt you to investigate a more easily sourced and cheaper alternative, which can
improve your carbon footprint - and improve the "sustainability" of the project.
Resources, Services and Tools - What will I need and what steps
must be taken to ensure access and availability?
What do you think you will need to complete the project? How can you begin to negotiate access
and co-ordinate your making with availability?

Sustainability
Use this page to identify aspects of your project relating to sustainability, unnecessary waste and
environmental concerns. What might you do to manage this and reduce your impact? If you can’t
manage it directly, could you take action to offset your carbon footprint?
For my project I aim to primarily use items I already own to enhance the personal flair to
the piece. I also will source items from charity shops therefore fitting the sustainability
quota by using second-hand materials. I will also use materials from UWE to avoid
purchasing new goods as much as possible.
Task 1 – Part 2
Project Budget
Please list below any cost or expenditure associated with your project. The aim here is to identify
the actual cost of the work you have made, rather than the projected cost of a proposed
outcome. You do not need to list those materials that are freely available in the studios
(paper/pencils/acrylic paint etc) but do include more specific materials such as fabric, resin,
superglue, neoprene etc. You can add to this list as you progress through the project.
