Introduction
The prevalence of online gaming among students has surged in recent years,
raising concerns about its potential impact on their study habits. While online gaming
offers various benefits, such as social interaction and cognitive development, its influence
on academic performance and study habits remains a subject of debate. This research
aims to examine the effects of online gaming on the study habits of students, providing
insights into the potential risks and benefits associated with this popular form of
entertainment.
Numerous studies have explored the relationship between video gaming and
academic outcomes, shedding light on the potential effects of gaming on students' study
habits. For instance, a study by Gentile et al. (2017) investigated the association between
video game use and academic performance among adolescents. The findings suggested
that excessive gaming was linked to poorer academic achievement and reduced time
devoted to studying.
between online gaming and academic engagement. Their findings indicated that
excessive online gaming was associated with lower levels of academic engagement and
While these studies provide valuable insights into the potential effects of online
gaming on study habits, there is still a need for further research to explore this relationship
in greater depth. Understanding the specific mechanisms through which online gaming
influences study habits, such as time allocation, concentration, and motivation, is crucial
for devising effective interventions and strategies to promote a healthy balance between

● How does online gaming impact students' time management skills and study
schedule?
From the problem stated above, the following hypotheses were formulated:
Null Hypothesis:
H0: There is no significant relationship between online gaming and students’ study habits.
Alternative Hypothesis:
H1: There is a significant relationship between online gaming and students’ study habits.

The Teacher. The results of the study can benefit teachers by providing insights into
the challenges students face when balancing online gaming and studying. This knowledge
enables teachers to offer targeted instruction, cater to individual needs, provide support and
guidance, improve classroom management, and collaborate with parents. Ultimately, this
can contribute to students' success in studying and help them develop effective study
habits.
Scope and Limitation
This study focused on the effects of online gaming on the study habits of the Grade
10 students in Bagumbayan National High School. The Study was conducted during the
school year 2022-2023. The subjects of the study were selected sections of Grade 10 in

achievement in school.
Isolation – non-socializing or the state of being in a place that is separated from others.
Online Gaming – it is a video game that can interact with other gamers.
Productivity – the amount of things that you have done in such a short time.
Study habits – these are the habits that you have formed during your school years.
Online gaming has gained significant popularity among students in recent years.
With the widespread availability of high-speed internet and the proliferation of gaming
platforms, more students are engaging in online gaming activities. While online gaming
can provide various benefits, it is crucial to examine its potential impact on the study
habits of students. This review aims to explore existing literature and studies related to

set boundaries, playing online games has no negative effects on their grades. They only
play games on breaks and weekends when they have more time than when they have
courses because they are aware that they must maintain self-control in order to perform
well in class. Even though they enjoy playing online games, they have good social skills
and are capable of doing well in the classroom. However, it is unavoidable to stop playing
for even a half-hour when they have grown accustomed to it. Therefore, discipline is all
that is needed.
Time Management and Online Gaming: Effective time management is crucial for
activities, including online gaming. Kuss, Louws, and Wiers (2012) conducted a study that
found a negative correlation between time spent on gaming and academic performance.
They concluded that poor time management and excessive gaming can lead to
decreased study hours and lower academic productivity. The local study made by Cortes,
Alcalde, and Camacho (2012) Resulted that Computer gaming, measured by number of
hours spent playing, contributes to the probability of a student to fail. As a result, computer
gamers also have a propensity to stop attending school altogether or to repeat one
academic year. There is a chance that education in high school could suffer since

industry continues to expand. This could imply that students will see a lesser rate of return

Similarly, a study by Wei, Chen, Huang, and Bai (2012) indicated that excessive online
gaming was related to higher levels of academic stress and decreased self-regulation of
study habits.
In addition to the study about the psychological effects of online gaming, Marino et
al. (2019) Conducted the study to investigate the possible moderating interactions
between psychological resilience and perceived stress in relation to online gaming (more

Social Interaction and Online Gaming: Online gaming often involves multiplayer
features, enabling students to interact with peers in virtual environments. However, the
impact of online gaming on social interaction and study habits is a topic of interest. Yee
(2006) conducted a study that showed a negative correlation between online gaming and
real-life social interaction, suggesting that excessive gaming may lead to social isolation
and reduced focus on academic pursuits. In addition to this, Uz and Cagiltay (2015)
Concluded that Online multiplayer games are what most gamers want to play with their
real-life friends and family. It cannot be said that multiplayer games are the perfect setting
for timid or introverted persons who find it difficult to form real-world social connections.
Gamers like to play alongside their real-life friends and family since the gaming
environment allows them to communicate and work together. Another local study, Reyes,
M. R., & Lopez, A. V. (2020). Found that many physical, academic, emotional, and
discovered they were drawn into gaming. They discover ways to escape from gaming as
they themselves find ways to escape the amusing virtual world for the real life.
The literature and studies reviewed in this paper indicate that excessive online
gaming can have a detrimental impact on students' study habits. It can lead to decreased
study time, lower academic performance, poor time management, psychological distress,
and potential social isolation. However, it is important to note that moderate and balanced
engagement in online gaming may not necessarily harm students' study habits. To foster
healthy study habits, students should prioritize effective time management, set
