3D SLICER
A. The Interface:

Tips: Hover above the icons to reveal short descriptions.

Click the drop down menu to see the organized modules, and click on ‘ALL MODULES’ for the entire list.

Clicking the icon will


show the different
viewing setting of the
software.

B. How to Load Data:

1. Identify the DICOM (3D Images) file.


2. Drag the file to the right panels, or use the ‘LOAD”
icon on the upper left corner and look for the files.

The prompt automatically


appears. Highlight the uploaded
file, and click ‘LOAD’, then click
‘OKAY’.

3. Press and hold the left mouse button and


move up/down, left/right to adjust the Apply the steps 3-5 to the CT windows below:
contrast and brightness of the 3D image.
4. Press and hold the control key and left
mouse button while moving up /down to
zoom-in/zoom-out.
5. Press and hold the shift key and left mouse
key to pan the image.
6. Press the shift key while hovering the
mouse to move the 3D slices across
sagittal, transverse, coronal windows.

C. How to crop a specific part

1. Choose the ‘VOLUME RENDERING’ module

2. Click on the eye


icon beside
‘Volume’, wait
until the image
appears in 3D
view. In some
cases, zooming
out is needed
to see enclose
the 3D image in
this window.

Put a check on ‘ENABLE’ and


‘DISPLAY ROI’ (region of
interest) for the 3D rendering
and volume borders. The ROI
can be adjusted using the
cursor.

The software automatically


names the newly created
ROI.

Note: The region of interest was already identified, but no cropping is applied yet.

2. Choose the ‘CROP VOLUME’ module.

D. How to create a label map:

Optional Steps:
3. In both ‘CROP VOLUME’ and ‘VOLUME RENDERING’ modules, turn off the visibility by clicking on the
eye icons. This removes the lines not needed in creating the label map.

1. Choose the ‘EDITOR’ module, expect a prompt,


and click ‘OK/Apply’.

Names for the previous


cropped volume and new-
labeled volume are
automatically generated.
The 3D rendering
can be turned off
to lessen visual
information.

Choose the appropriate


label value by clicking on
the color swatch.

Click on the
‘Threshold Effect’
icon. Adjust the If needed to
values to isolate separate the parts,
the desired part. use ‘Change Island
Effect’ by manually
selecting.

Build the model


using ‘Make
Model Effect’, and
choose the label,
and click ‘APPLY’.

E. How to save the 3D model:


1. Click on the ‘SAVE’ icon. A prompt will appear.

The prompt contains all the


reconstructed parts of each
step.
Make sure to look for the
model created towards the
end.

Remove the check from the


other files unless these are
intended to be saved too.
Choose the file format
compatible to the 3D
printer to the used. Then,
click ‘SAVE’.
