C. GENERALIZATION
How can you tell if a product or a service is fraudulent?
D. APPLICATION
The teacher will introduce the activity to the class.
1. This activity is approximately 20 minutes long.
2. Use this prompt to introduce the activity:
“Let us spot the quackery. Let us analyze the given situations and evaluate the products or the services
advertised.”
3. Provide the following instructions to the class:
a. Read the given situations and evaluate each for fraud.
b. Write down the possible dangers of the products in each situation.
● Situation 1: A lady approached Karla, selling a perfume that could guarantee she would lose
weight in just seven days. Karla eagerly bought the perfume.
Answer: Karla may have an allergic reaction to the perfume. The perfume might even have
components from illegal drugs prepared as inhalants. Karla would waste her money buying perfumes, ending
up not being able to afford legitimate products. She might also believe that she would not need to do proper
diet and exercise anymore, leading to more detrimental health effects.
● Situation 2: Michael just got some devastating news that he has colon cancer. He searched online
for cures for his illness and saw an ad for a miracle drink that could cure cancer. Michael decided to purchase
the item online.
Answer: Michael might follow his doctors' advice and decide not to undergo chemotherapy,
radiotherapy or surgery. He would possibly stop going to his doctors, because he believes in the fraudulent
product more. When his condition worsens and he decides to undergo correct treatment, he might blame the
chemotherapy or the doctors for his worsening condition.
● Situation 3: Valerie had dysmenorrhea. She went to the local pharmacy and consulted the
pharmacist about what medicine she could purchase. The pharmacist sold her an FDA-approved medication
for dysmenorrhea.
Answer: She may feel better after she drinks the medicine recommended by the pharmacist.
4. Ask the following questions to process the activity:
a. In the three situations, which one was a legitimate product? Which ones were fraudulent? Why?
Answer: Situations 1 and 2 both had fraudulent products. Situation 3 had a legitimate product. The
perfume and the miracle drink had claims that were not valid. However, Valerie’s medicine proved to be a
legitimate product because it was bought at a pharmacy and was FDA-approved.
b. In each situation, why do you think the consumer bought the products?
Possible answer: Answers may vary. “The consumer may be desperate because of his or her
respective condition.”
c. Would you buy a product just because a celebrity endorsed it? Why or why not?
Possible answer: Answers may vary. “A product endorsed by a celebrity does not guarantee that it
is legitimate. I would always check the product's credibility first before purchasing it.”
