I am writing to express my keen interest in the PhD program in the centre for
Respiratory Science and Health at RMIT University.
Nanomedicine has revolutionized drug delivery by offering precise, targeted, and
efficient methods of administering medication. Through nanotechnology, drugs can be
encapsulated with nanoscale carriers such as nanoparticles or liposomes, enabling
several advancements. Recently, the application of nanomedicine has been explored
in the delivery of biologics such as proteins and genes.
Throughout my academic life, I have consistently been among the top-ranking
students in the class. I have completed my bachelor’s in pharmaceutical sciences with
first division honours from rayat bahra institute of pharmacy affiliated to Punjab
technical university. During the graduation, I learnt various disciplines of
pharmaceutical sciences such as pharmaceutics, pharmacology, biotechnology,
anatomy and physiology. I was extremely attracted towards pharmaceutics as a
subject. I qualified two competitive national level examinations (GPAT and NIPER-
JEE) to attain admission in postgraduation at prestigious institute of pharmacy in India.
I did my master’s in pharmaceutical sciences with a major in pharmaceutics (drug
design and delivery) from the national institute of pharmaceutical education and
research (NIPER), Ahmedabad. During the masters’ coursework, I got introduced to
various novel drug delivery systems such as nanoparticles and microparticulate drug
delivery systems. In the continuation of this, I also learned about surface
functionalization and target specific delivery of nanoparticles. I was very intrigued and
desired to explore more about the big world of tiny nanoparticles. So, I decided to do
my masters project on nanoparticles.
A discussion with my lab mates and Prof. Rakesh Tekade gave me insight into the
research projects in our laboratory. I watched several of my seniors work on different
types of nanoparticles for the treatment of cancer. However, after I went through an
extensive literature review, I realized how different nanoparticles are being explored
for the treatment of cancer. I decided to work on a research project on a combination
therapy (chemotherapy and photothermal) for the treatment of breast cancer. This
project involved the synthesis of nanoparticles, surface functionalization,
characterization of nanoparticles using different parameters (such as size,
polydispersity index, zeta potential and photothermal conversion efficiency),
formulation optimization.
Apart from regular studies, I was also involved in the extracurricular activities such as
singing, writing. I am working as a volunteer with a mental health organization focused
on the mental well-being of people. I also work as a tutor to provide free education to
unprivileged children.
After my postgraduation, I worked for two years in the leading biopharma industries of
India (Biocon Biologics and Intas). I mainly worked in the department of formulation
research and development. This role focused on the formulation development of
monoclonal antibodies (liquid and lyophilized) and fusion peptides. After formulating, I
used to characterize the drug products using analytical techniques (such as UV-Vis
spectroscopy, HPLC, icIEF and CE-SDS) and charge them for stability studies to know
the effect of different environmental conditions on the stability of the formulation.
The industries I worked with were mainly focused on the manufacturing of biosimilar
products. The proteins and genes were formulated in buffers with stabilizers and
tonicity modifiers. No interest was made on the target specific delivery of these
wonderful products. I always wanted to explore more in the field of drug delivery. So,
I decided to pursue PhD in drug delivery in order to potentially contribute to the field
of medicine.
When I came across this opportunity focused on exploring the application of
nanomedicine in creating target specific therapies for chronic lung diseases, I was
extremely keen to apply for the same. It will not only provide me an opportunity to
pursue a PhD in drug delivery but at the same time, it will also provide me a chance
to work on such an interesting world of nanomedicine. It will be a wonderful opportunity
to explore my skills gained during postgraduation (working on nanoparticles) and
professional career (working on biological drug products) and combine them in
exploring how nanomedicine enables the delivery of biotherapeutics. Also, I am willing
to attain required skills and work harder to fulfil the needs of this project.
The opportunity to collaborate with esteemed researchers at RMIT University is
particularly appealing. I am eager to engage in the interdisciplinary environment
offered by your institution, where I aim to contribute my skills and learn from the
collective expertise in this field. Moreover, my motivation stems from a desire to
translate theoretical knowledge into practical solutions, addressing critical health care
challenges. I am committed to leveraging my analytical skills, creativity, and
perseverance to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing research initiatives and further
the frontiers of intracellular drug delivery.
I am confident that pursuing a PhD at RMIT University will not only refine my academic
prowess but also nurture my growth as a researcher and innovator. I am enthusiastic
about the prospect of contributing to the vibrant academic community and embarking
on a journey of discovery and innovation.
I will be extremely thankful if you consider this application. I am eagerly looking forward
to the possibility of joining your esteemed program and making impactful contributions
to the field of nanomedicine.
Warm regards,
Sandeep Kaur
