THE TEACHER WE REMEMBER

Analyze

1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards and the TEDx
videos that you viewed, what competencies does a great teacher possess?
 Based on the video I had watched; the following are the competencies does a great
teacher possess
A great teacher is chill -Linda, Grade 8
A great teacher thinks like a kid but acts like an adult -Daisley, Grade 9
A great teacher is not a teacher -Jeff, Grade 7
A great teacher understands that students have a life outside of school -Bryan,
Grade 12
A great teacher helps students if they notice struggle -Nayeli, Grade 8
A great teacher “sings” -Danny, Grade 9

2. Are these competencies limited only to professional competencies?

No, based on the videos I have watched, TEDx speeches on a great teacher’s
competencies often address a broad variety of competencies, including both professional
and personal attributes. While topic knowledge, teaching tactics, and classroom
management are crucial, personal abilities such as empathy, communication skills, and
the capacity to inspire and motivate students are also frequently covered in these
speeches. To flourish in their work, great instructors frequently have a combination of
professional and personal abilities.

3. For a teacher to be great, is it enough to possess the professional competencies to plan a

lesson, execute a lesson plan, manage the class, assess learning, compute, and report
grades? Explain your answer.
No, as teachers, we do not just plan our lessons or teach them; we must understand and
listen to our students. As the speaker says, we, as teachers, have deep understanding of
our students. Students know that we love teaching and we love to learn, but we also need
to listen to our dear students. By listening, we could transform school into education.

4. For a teacher to be great, which is more important – personal qualities or

professional competencies?
In my opinion, for a teacher to be great, both are important because an excellent teacher
must have both personal characteristics and professional competence. The balance
between the two can change depending on the educational situation and the requirements
of the students. Empathy, patience, adaptability, and the ability to connect with kids are
essential for developing excellent teacher-student connections and fostering a positive
and inclusive learning environment. These characteristics can have a substantial impact
on a student's motivation and engagement. Professional competences, on the other hand,
give the tools and abilities needed to present content successfully, manage a classroom,
assess student progress, and satisfy curricular standards. These qualities ensure that the
instructor can successfully impart knowledge and encourage learning. It is not a case of
one being more significant than the other; becoming a great teacher requires both
personal characteristics and professional competence. To satisfy the different
requirements of their students, great teachers find a balance between these components.
5. Who are the teachers that we remember most?
The teacher we remember most is the one who listens to and understands his or her
students. Students remember and appreciate teachers who listen and understand them
because of the positive emotional connection. Students feel valued and respected when a
teacher listens and exhibits empathy. Feeling heard and understood develops a sense of
trust and security, making the learning environment more comfortable and pleasurable.
Engaged students are more willing to participate, ask questions, and take risks in their
learning, resulting in improved comprehension and retention. Teachers who understand
their students can detect specific learning requirements and adjust their lessons
accordingly. This individualized approach can assist pupils in better grasping and
remembering the subject. Students may remember a teacher who made them feel valued
and understood long after they left the classroom. Teachers who listen and understand
their students create a positive and supportive learning environment that enhances
students' engagement, retention, and overall educational experience. This, in turn, leads
to more profound and lasting memories of the teacher.

Reflect

Which personal traits do I possess? Not possess? Where do I need improvement in?
Which professional competencies am I strongly capable of demonstrating?
In which competencies do I need to develop more?
Who are the teachers that we remember most?
For me, I possess these personal traits: "A great teacher understands that students have a
life outside of school" because, as a great educator, I recognize and respect the fact that
students have obligations, interests, and experiences outside of school. Great teachers
recognize each student's uniqueness and recognize that their lives, experiences, and
circumstances differ. They regard kids as unique people with unique needs and priorities.
It suggests that students have outside commitments, duties, and activities such as family,
work, hobbies, and social life. Great instructors understand the need for a healthy work-
life balance for their students. The necessity of a teacher's understanding and
consideration for the different lives and circumstances of their students It emphasizes the
need for educators to be aware of the realities of their students' lives and create a
supportive and flexible learning environment that accommodates these realities. I need
improvement when it comes to a great teacher who thinks like a kid but acts like an
adult. I admitted that sometimes I think like a kid, but I am willing to improve this for
me to be capable of being a teacher. The teacher we remember most is the one who
listens to and understands his or her students. Students remember and appreciate teachers
who listen and understand them because of the positive emotional connection. Students
feel valued and respected when a teacher listens and exhibits empathy. Feeling heard and
understood develops a sense of trust and security, making the learning environment more
comfortable and pleasurable. Engaged students are more willing to participate, ask
questions, and take risks in their learning, resulting in improved comprehension and
retention. Teachers who understand their students can detect specific learning
requirements and adjust their lessons accordingly. This individualized approach can
assist pupils in better grasping and remembering the subject. Students may remember a
teacher who made them feel valued and understood long after they left the classroom.
Teachers who listen and understand their students create a positive and supportive
learning environment that enhances students' engagement, retention, and overall
educational experience. This, in turn, leads to more profound and lasting memories of
the teacher.

Write Action Research Prompts

1. OBSERVE In assisting my Resource Teacher, I observed that personal traits such as

passionate with career, patience, and professional competencies like exploring
the other methods and strategies for an effective learning and
understanding his students, their weakness and strengths were least/ not
displayed and as a result, students were/ class was not listening and
cooperating in some discussion.

2. REFLECT The lack of these personal traits and professional competencies (mentioned
in #1) may be caused by loaded of paper works and stress because of their
deadlines.

research on seminars about stress management and coping struggles in
work.

4. ACT

a) The main objective of my action research is to help teachers who struggle

in work and how to cope the stress.
b) My specific research questions are: What is the best solution on how

Work on my Artifacts

Attach your reflection here.

I learned and realized that an excellent teacher enjoys both teaching and learning. Reflect
on what, why, and how you accomplish things in the classroom. As a result of this introspection,
great teachers adjust in order to continuously enhance their performance. In this book, we cover
all you need to know about the benefits of reflective teaching, how to become more reflective,
and how to inspire others to do the same. A teacher's style or method of motivating students is
unique to him or her. Motivation is critical to a student's success in learning and development.
Instructors spend more time with their pupils than most parents do; hence, instructors have an
important role in determining their students' success. If our parents or instructors are lousy
leaders, it is our children who suffer. When our children shine as leaders, they blossom, and the
world opens to them. As a prospective teacher, it is critical that I identify the appropriate
teaching style for the children I will be teaching so they can obtain the greatest education
possible. A teacher's key traits can be classified into a few main teaching styles or leadership
styles. The primary modes of teaching and leadership are directing, participating, delegating, and
combining approaches. The characteristics linked to these styles are essential for any instructor.
As instructors, our goal is essentially the same as that of any successful leader: to provide
purpose, direction, and motivation while working to fulfill the mission, which in this case is to
educate. I have learned from my research and experience dealing with children that what a leader
or teacher provides to the pupils or audience is critical to their development and learning. The
personal attributes of a teacher are also important variables in pupils' development and
motivation.
Being a teacher is not easy, as we all know, but loving your profession will help you be a
great teacher. In today’s generation, many of our students struggle emotionally. As teachers, we
must extend our patience and understanding to them. Most of the youth or students are more
independent; they always think that they know everything. We must tell them that, as a teacher,
you are always there to guide and support them. As much as possible, we listen and understand
them so that we can enter their lives and understand them.
