2) Write a note on the development of literature and language during the


sultanate period.
Ans: During the sultanate period in India literature and language saw significant
developments. Persian became the official language of administration. This led
to the patronage of Persian literature, fostering the growth of poetry, and
historical chronicles. Regional languages like Hindi, Urdu and Bengali began to
evolve, influenced by the Persian and Arabic. This period led the foundation for
the rich literary tradition that continued to flourish during the subsequent
Mughal rule.

3) Which style of painting was popular during the sultanate period? Which
dynasty popularized it?
Ans: the Rajput style of miniature painting was popular in the sultanate period.
The Lodi dynasty popularized it.

4) Describe the administrative division and the social division of the Delhi
sultanate.
Ans: The administrative division of the sultanate in descending order was on the
following pattern: Provinces, shiqs, parganas and villages. A governor ran the
administration of a province with the help of officers called muqtis. The village
was the smallest administrative unit of the sultanate. Its administration was run
by the muqaddam, patwari and munsif. The village panchayats used to settle
local disputes.
The society was divided into four groups –
a. Aristocrats: They formed the highest and the most powerful group in the
social hierarchy.
b. Priests: the class considered of religious and legal scholars like the Ulema and
Qazi, and Hindu Brahmins. The Muslim religious held high positions in the
administration.
c. Town people: They comprised traders, artisans and craftsmen.
d. Farmers: They formed the class of the common people. The farmers were the
most oppressed class. They were often subjected to heavy taxes.

5) Write a note on the state of education during the sultanate period.


Ans: the upper classes of society sent their children for education. Hindu children
studied in temples while Muslim children went to mosques for education. The
Hindu schools were called pathshalas or tols while the Muslim schools were
called madrasas and maqtabs. Firuz Shah Tughlaq set up a madrasa at Hauz Khas
in Delhi.

6) Name four cities built in Delhi during the sultanate period.


Ans: Siri, Tughlqabad, Jahanpanah and Ferozabad.
