Ans: His father was Hyder Ali. He defeated the British in the First Mysore War.
iv. Write a short note about him and his struggle. (3 marks)
Ans: Tipu Sultan was an able general and an industrious ruler. After his father, he
continues the struggle to brought Mysore’s rule. In 1789, Tipu attacked Travancore.
The British formed an alliance with the Marathas and the Nizam of Hyderabad and
defeated Tipu at Serigapatam in 1792. He was killed by British in the Fourth Mysore
war.

Ans: The Quit India Movement was a significant event during India’s freedom
struggle launched on 8th August 1942. It proposed starting a mass struggle on non-
violent lines under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi to compel the British to grant
complete independence to India.
ii. Who initiated the Quit India Movement? And why? (3 marks)
Ans: Mahatma Gandhi initiated the Quit India Movement, demanding an end to
British rule in India and the establishment of an Independent nation.
iii. How did the British respond to the Quit India Movement? (3 marks)
Ans: The British respond by suppressing the movement with their force, arresting
some prominent leaders. The Quit India Movement did not lead to immediate
independence.

With reference to the freedom struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi, discuss the following:
i. What was the ‘Salt March’? And why is it significance in Gandhi’s leadership of the
freedom struggle? (4 marks)
Ans: The Salt March was undertaken by Mahatma Gandhi and his supporters as a
mark of protest against the unjust salt laws imposed by the British Government on
Indians. It is significant as a symbol of non-violent Civil Disobedience Movement.
ii. How did Mahatma Gandhi contribute to the promotion of Khadi during the freedom
struggle? (3 marks)
Ans: Mahatma Gandhi promoted khadi during the freedom struggle by encouraging
Indians to spin and weave their own cloth. Through the khadi movement, he
advocated for economic self-reliance, boycotting foreign goods and fostering unity.
iii. What role did Mahatma Gandhi play in the Champaran Satyagraha? (3 marks)
Ans: Gandhi fought for the rights of poor indigo cultivators, who were suffering
under the British rule. This marked one of his early efforts in the freedom struggle.
