• Input is any data and instructions entered into
the memory of a device

• Input device is the hardware used to enter the

data and instruction. It communicates
instructions and commands to a
computer/device

Keyboards

• A keyboard is an input device that

contains keys you can press to enter
data and instructions into a computer
or mobile device.

• A keyboard is composed of buttons

used to create letters, numbers, 7

and symbols, and perform additional (computerhope.com., 2021)

functions.
Typing area • Includes letters, numbers, punctuation marks and other basic keys

• Are special keys to issue commands to a computer. Labeled with the

Function keys letter F followed by a number

• Key that switches to two states each time user presses the key. Example
Toggle key Caps Lock and Num Lock

• Allow to move the insertion point (cursor) using arrow keys, Page Up and
Navigation keys Page down keys

• One or more keyboard keys that may perform operating system or

Keyboard shortcut keys application-related task

Media control buttons • Allow user to control a media player program, adjust speaker volume

• The keyboard layout is the arrangement of the keys on
a computer keyboard.

QWERTY Layout Dvorak Layout Colemak Layout

(daskeyboard.com. 2020) 12
QWERTY Layout

• Typing layout was invented by Christopher Latham Sholes in the 1870s.

• The goal of this layout was literally designed to be slow and inefficient so
that the typewriters would not jam from typing too fast on them.
• QWERTY refers to the first six letters on the upper row of the keyboard.
13
Dvorak Layout

• In the 1930s the Dvorak layout

was invented by Dr. August Dvorak.
• The goal of the design was to be fast and efficient.
• Vowels and the five most common consonants were placed in the middle row,
with the idea that an alternating rhythm would be established between left
and right hands. 14
Colemak Layout

• Colemak layout invented by Shai Coleman in 2006.

• It was designed to be an upgrade from the Dvorak.

15
Pointing devices

• A pointing device is used to point to and select specific

objects on the computer screen.

• It also can be used to move objects and position or draw

items on the screen
16

(Campbell et al., 2020)

• A touchpad • A trackball

Touch screens

•It is a display that lets you touch areas of the

screen to interact with software.

Besides using fingers, touchscreens can respond

to a stylus or digital pen to enter commands.

Multitouch screens can respond to multiple fingers 18

touching the screen simultaneously.

(Campbell et al., 2020) Photo by RF._.studio from Pexels

A stylus is a small device,
shaped like a pen that can be
use to draw, tap icons or keys
on an on-screen keyboard.

A digital pen is similar to a

Pen input stylus but is more capable
because it has programmable
buttons.

•Pen input is used to

make selections or
draw on a touch
screen with more
precision than a finger
(Campbell et al., 2020)

• A graphics tablet or
digitizer, is an electronic
plastic board that detects
and converts movements
of a style or digital pen into
signals that are sent to the
computer.

• With motion input, sometimes
called gesture recognition,
users can guide on-screen
elements using air gestures.

• User can play sports game

and use motion-sensing game
controller as baseball bats and
golf clubs

• Voice input is the process of
entering input by speaking into a
microphone
• Voice recognition, also called
speech recognition, is the computer
or mobile device’s capability of
distinguishing spoken words 22

• Audio input is the process of
entering any sound into the
computer such as speech, music,
and sound effects
• Music production software allows
users to record, compose, mix,
and edit music and sounds
23

(Vermaat et al., 2018)

• Video input is the process of capturing full-motion images and
storing them on a computer or mobile device’s storage
medium

digital video camera that enables

videoconferences 25
• It is a meeting between two or more
geographically separated people who
use a network or the Internet to
transmit audio and video data.
• Video conferencing using a computer
requires:
i. Video conferencing software/ app
ii. Microphone
iii. Speaker
iv. Video camera

• A scanner is a light-sensing
input device that reads printed
text and graphics and then
translates the results into a
form the computer can
process.

4 Main Types of Document Scanner
Flatbed scanner Sheet-fed scanner Hand-held scanner Drum scanner

28
Scanner Type Method of Scanning and Use

Flatbed • Similar to a copy machine

• Scanning mechanism passes under the item to be scanned, which is
placed on a glass surface
Pen/ Handheld • Move pen over text to be scanned, then transfer data to computer
• Ideal for mobile users, students and researchers

Sheet-Fed • Item to be scanned is pulled into a stationary scanning mechanism

• Smaller than a flatbed scanner

Drum • Item to be scanned rotates around a stationary scanning mechanism

• Very expensive
• Used in large businesses 29
• An optical reader is a device that uses a light source to
read characters, marks, and codes and then converts
them into digital data that a computer can process.

Optical character Optical mark recognition

recognition (OCR) (OMR)

30
• A bar code reader, also called a bar code
scanner uses laser beams to read bar
codes.
(Vermaat et al., 2018)

• A barcode is a set of lines of different widths

and sizes representing data, that when read
help identify the scanned object. Barcodes
are often used to help organize and index
information or prices about an object.

Radio Frequency Identification
(RFID)
• RFID (radio frequency identification)
uses radio signals to communicate with
a tag placed in or attached to an object
• An RFID reader reads information on
the tag via radio waves (Vermaat et al., 2018)

• RFID can track :

• Magnetic-stripe readers read the information stored inside the magnetic
stripe of a card. The information could be a code or some personal
information that helps in the identification of an individual.

•Output is information processed into a
useful form.

•Output device conveys information from

the computer to the users.

Data
Displays Printers headphones/
projectors
Ear-buds

Interactive Game
whiteboards controllers

38
• A display visually conveys text, graphics,
and video information
• A monitor is a display that is packaged as
a separate peripheral device. Four (4)
main types of monitors are:

1. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

2. Light Emitting Diodes (LED)
3. Cathode Ray Tube (CRT)
4. Plasma 39

• The quality of a display depends primarily on its:

Response
Resolution Brightness
time

Contrast
Dot pitch
ratio
40

(Campbell et al., 2020)

• Today’s monitors use a digital signal to produce a
picture
• To display the highest quality images, the monitor
should plug in a:

 A digital video interface (DVI) port

 An high definition media interface (HDMI) port
 A Display Port

• Home users sometimes
use a digital television
(DTV) as a display
• HDTV is the most
advanced form of digital
television
• A Smart TV is an Internet-
enabled HDTV

• A printer is an output device that produces text and graphics
on a physical medium.

• Two (2) categories of printer:

1. Impact printer: a printing device in which a printing element
directly strikes a surface (as in a typewriter)
2. Nonimpact printer : a printer that creates images without
mechanically impacting the page, as an ink-jet or laser 43

printer
• Impact printers form characters and graphics on a piece
of paper by striking a mechanism against an inked
ribbon that physically contacts the paper
