SECTION B (54 MARKS)
Answer all questions in this Section
3. In titration experiment, 25𝑐𝑚3 of hydrated sodium carbonate Na2 CO3 . XH2 O were
titrated against 20cm3 of 0.25M hydrochloric acid. The solution of sodium
carbonate was made by dissolving 7.15g of the compound in 250cm3 of distilled
water.
Use the above data to answer the following questions.
a) Write down a balanced equation to represent the acid-base reaction.
b) (i) Find the molarity of the hydrated sodium carbonate
(ii) Calculate the value of X in the hydrated sodium carbonate
4. (a)Write the formula for the following compounds.
i. 1,2 – dichloroethane
ii. Pent -2 – yne
(b) You are provided with CH3 CH2 OH, CH3 CH2 CH3 , CH3 COOH and 𝐶𝐻2 = 𝐶𝐻2
i. Which compounds are gases at room temperature?
ii. How can you distinguish compound CH3 CH2 CH3 and CH2 = CH2
iii. Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction of the compound
which would react with sodium carbonate
5. (a) A gift of 5g of Calcium carbonate was given to John and 8g of Calcium
carbonate was given to Juma. The sample was stored in the same container
when John and Juma arrived at home. The next day in the morning their
sister Asha accidentally poured dilute hydrochloric acid in the container and
the colorless gas R was produced.
i. Suggest the name of the colorless gas R produced.
ii. What chemical test will you conduct to identify gas R.?
(b) (i) What volume of the gas R was produced at STP?
(ii)If the gas was collected by Asha, how would she use the gas? (Two points)
6. Form two students planned to conduct an experiment for the preparation of gas
Y. In the experiment they planned to use flat-bottomed flask, thistle funnel,
delivery tube, beehive shelf and gas jar. Also a pieces of zinc metal and dilute
hydrochloric acid were used.
a) Identify gas Y.
b) What apparatus is missing in a set provided?
c) How can the gas produced be used in your daily life (Give four uses)
d) Write the balanced chemical equation for the preparation of gas Y
identified above.
7. (a) Masanja said “both metals and non-metals are elements and both are
located in a periodic table but they differ in their position”. Now briefly
explain about the location or position of metals and non-metals.

formula.
8. (a) When Sir Nassib visiting the Chemistry laboratory, He observed that most of
the chemistry apparatus were made by glass materials. By giving two reasons,
explain to Sir Nassib why most of the chemistry apparatus are made by glass
materials?
