1. This paper consists of sections A, B and C with a total of eleven (11) questions
2. Answer all questions in section A and B and two questions from section C.
3. Section A carries sixteen (16) marks, section B fifty-four (54) marks and section C thirty
(30) marks.
4. Non-programmable calculators may be used.

3. Before lighting the Bunsen burner, Vanesa first closed the air holes and then lighted it and
obtained flame A. She then opened the air holes completely and obtained flame B
(a) Why was it necessary for Vanesa to close the air holes before lighting the Bunsen burner?

(c) Briefly give five assumptions on how life would be without Chemistry.

4(a). A form two student at Kimochi secondary went in the laboratory and found five bottles
with different mixtures as follows: Bottle A contained iodine and sand, bottle B contained
cooking oiland water, bottle C contained water and salt, bottle D contained maize grain and sand.
Which method will be used to separate mixtures on those bottles? Bottle A, B,C, and D.

b. Briefly explain the role of chemistry in the below fields.

iii. Transport
c. David after suffered from a certain disease he attending to the hospital and do a checkup. After
diagnosis the physicians prescribe the medicine that is vital for curing the disease that David is
suffered from. But before gave David the syrups, the Doctor told him to make sure that he shakes
well the medicine before use it.

i. Briefly explain what does the doctor mean


ii. What is the specific chemistry term that explains doctor’s instruction?
iii. Define clearly that term
5.(a) Suppose your friend was hit with a stone on his or her leg hardly when you were praying
together, suddenly his or her leg changed its colour that covers a large area of it
i. What is that condition that occurred on your friend’s leg?

ii. What are three steps are you going to use to help him or her?

(b) Misheli, a form four student at school X was conducting a experiment in a chemistry
laboratory during a practical session, what are four (4) instructions should she follow during the
session?

(c) When you visit a chemistry laboratory, you will find that some of the laboratory apparatus are
made up of porcelain materials. Give any two (2) reasons for this.

6. A form four student placed a silvery white solid on a deflating spoon, ignited it and then
lowered the spoon into a gas jar containing oxygen. The solid burned with a brick red flame.

(a) Identify the silvery white substance that burned into oxygen

(b) Explain the nature of the product in terms of acidic or basic properties

(c) Write the product formed after burning the silvery solid

(d) Oxygen gas is collected through a downward displacement of water

i. What makes it to be collected over water by a process called downward displacement


of water?

ii. Can all the oxygen formed from hydrogen peroxide be collected into the gas jar?

9. A doctor prescribed antacid tablets made from magnesium hydroxide to a student who was
suffering from excess stomach acid.
a. Why did the doctor prescribe the antacid tablets?
b. Write a balanced chemical equation that took place in the student’s stomach after taking the
tablets?
c. Describe four common stage for the extraction of metal and give reason why extraction of
gold does not follow all four stage.
d. If each tablet of an antacid weighs 145mg of Magnesium hydroxide, how many tablets will the
student be given?
e. If a dose requires1 tablet per every 12 hours, how many days should the student take to finish
the full dose?
10. Farms at Rau village and Sengia village lack some nutrients. Thus; villagers were advised to
add inorganic fertilizers in their farms in order to obtain high yields. Villagers at Rau village
accepted to add inorganic fertilizers in their farms but villager at Sengia village were not willing
to add inorganic fertilizers in their farms. Appraise six reasons to support villagers at Sengia
village.
11 (a) Eutrophication is excessive growth of aquatic plant and algae in water bodies;

ii. Explain the effect of eutrophication (give two points)
(b) Explain how industrial workers can be protected against harmful Effect of chemicals. Give
three points.
