Mochila Phone Bag

By Robin Kline

Materials:
4 skeins (50 g each) of different colors of approved mercerized cotton yarn
2 mm steel crochet hook (if you are a tight crocheter, you can go up to 2.75 mm)
5 thin stitch markers (optional but very helpful)

The mochila style of crochet is a type of tapestry crochet that has you crocheting over the unused
colors of yarn, making a very sturdy, firm fabric. You use only a single crochet stitch through the back
loop only. This bag is started from a chain, crocheting down both sides of the chain to create an oval
bottom. The bottom has just 4 rows with increases, making it easier for beginners to learn the basic
techniques. Most mochila bags are made with a round bottom. The handle/strap for this bag will be
made by braiding 8 strands of the same yarn using a kumihimo braiding disc.

1. Begin by making a skip knot on your hook and chain 36 stitches.

2. In the 2nd chain from the hook, single crochet through the top loop only for 34 stitches. Place a
stitch marker in the first sc made (beginning of round). In the last chain, put 3 sc. Place a
stitch marker in the first and third stitches made. Now do 33 sc down the other side of the
starting chain. Do NOT put these stitches in the stitches that were just made! In the last stitch
before the marker you put in for the beginning of the round, put 3 sc. Place a stitch marker in
the 1st and 3rd stitches just made. You should now have 5 stitch markers, 2 at one end, and 3
at the end you are now working at. The stitch markers will help you know where to put the
increases in the next rows. (72 total stitches)
3. Starting with the stitch that has the beginning of the round stitch marker, sc through the back loop
only and move the stitch marker to this first stitch, then continue with 32 more sc through the back
loop only. All stitches from this point on are through the back loop only. Put 2 sc into the stitch
with the stitch marker and move the stitch marker to the first of these two stitches, do 1 sc, then in
the next stitch with the stitch marker, place 2 sc, placing the stitch marker in the 2 nd stitch made.
Continue down the side for 33 sc. Place 2 sc in the stitch with the marker, placing the marker in
the 1st stitch made, 1 sc, 2 sc in the next stitch with the marker, placing the marker in the 2 nd stitch
made. There should now be 3 stitches between the markers for the increases. (76 total stitches)
4. Sc 33 (move the start of round marker to the first stitch again), 2 stitches in the stitch with the
marker, 3 sc, 2 stitches in the stitch with the marker, 33 sc, 2 stitches in the the stitch with the
marker, 3 sc, 2 stitches in the stitch with the marker. (79 total stitches.
5. This round has no increases, so those markers are no longer needed, however, you may want to
use them to help you know where the pattern repeats start. We will also start to carry the unused
colors starting with this round. Using your container and clips, thread each color of yarn through a
separate clip to help keep your yarns from tangling. Hold the yarn so that you are crocheting over
the unused colors and sc one complete round. Be sure to tension the unused yarns as instructed.
There are YouTube videos by Marion Verloop that show how to hold your yarns and tension them.
She also has videos on how to do the color change. That will not be explained in this document.
(79 stitches)
6. We will now start the pattern. The pattern is 20 stitches and we will repeat it 4 times for the bag.
The 4th repeat will be short 1 stitch. This eliminates the more noticeable jog that is present in
some patterns and it also means that the start of round marker will move. Read the chart from the
lower right corner to the left, repeating the chart as many times as necessary to get to the start of
round marker (for this bag you will repeat the chart twice since the chart shows the pattern twice).

7. The chart above shows that the pattern is 20 stitches wide by 4 rows high. When working the
last row of the 8th repeat, (or at whatever your desired height is), we will put in the button holes
for the cord to go through. It is easiest to do this on the round that has the fewest color
changes, but that is not a requirement. You will want the button holes to be at the sides of your
bag. Each button hole will be 5 stitches wide. The button hole is made by just doing your
single crochet stitches over the carried threads and not into the stitches of the previous round.
Then skip 5 stitches and reattach to the bag, go around to the other side and repeat. Continue
on with the pattern for one more repeat of the rows.
8. The top of the bag can be left with just the plain single crochets or if you want a fancy finish, try
the crab stitch in either the same or contrast color. You do not carry the other colors on the last
round of the bag.

The last step is to create the strap/cord for your bag!

A simple strap/cord can be made by braiding 16 strands of the same yarn used to make your bag.
Each strand should be cut to be 3 times the desired length of the finished cord. Tie the 16 strands
together in a knot, put through the disc from top to bottom, then place the colors in the positions as
shown in the pattern. You will probably want to wind the unbraided portions of the strands around a
bobbin, clothespin or other device to prevent tangling while braiding.
Here are two different braiding patterns. The first is best for first time braiders since the colors are
always paired together. Braiding is always done with 2 pairs, a top pair and a bottom pair. In the first
example, both pairs are red. The braiding pattern would be to take the top right red strand and place
it to the right of the bottom right red strand, then take the bottom left red strand and place it next to
the top left red strand. Rotate the disc counter-clockwise (to the left) so that the aqua colored pair is
at the top, then repeat the top right to bottom right, bottom left to top left and rotate to the left.
