Monica Asymmetrical Top

CROCHET PATTERN

by MGotHooked
Hello!
Thank you so much for showing interest in making your own Monica Asymmetrical Top!

As a fiber artist, it has always been one of my goals to make free patterns/tutorials for my
fellow artists. So when people showed interest in my asymmetrical top, I knew this was my
signal to finally make my first-ever free crochet pattern! For sure, this wouldn’t be the last.
Hihi

Monica Asymmetrical Top may be made with or without a sleeve, so whichever you prefer,
go for it!

Keep on creating!

Oh.. wait! Before you begin, just a few reminders:

● Even though this is a free pattern, please keep your copy of Monica
Asymmetrical Top Crochet Written Pattern all to yourself. Should you
know someone who’s interested in the pattern, kindly refer them to my Ko-fi
shop so they can download a copy for themselves.
● This is for your personal use only. You may not sell your finished pieces.
● Promoting Monica through social media posts is highly appreciated, but
making your own tutorial of it in any form is highly prohibited.
● When posting about Monica in your personal social media accounts, please
always give credits to the designer. (Well... that’s me, @mgothooked! Hehe)

Thank you once again! I hope that you’ll enjoy making your own Monica!

Guidelines
• This pattern uses US Terminologies.
• This pattern is made-to-measure, which means you will need to get your own body
measurements. Guide on how to do this is provided..
• Recommended yarn for this project is size 2 sport weight, but you may also use size 1
fingering or size 3 DK.
• Please do not make any alterations or modifications, especially without consulting with
me first.
• CH 1 and CH 2 at the start of every row doesn’t count as a ST.
• Words in bold and the footer (@MGOTHOOKED) are clickable buttons.

Terminologies
• CH/S = chain/s • HDC = half double crochet
• ST = stitch • HDC BLO = half double crochet back loop only
• SL ST = slip stitch • HDC DEC = half double crochet two together
• SC = single crochet • HDC INC = two HDCs in one ST
• SC BLO = single crochet back loop only • FHDC = foundation half double crochet

Materials
• yarn (I used approx. 200 grams of size 2 sport weight for a size M-L)
• hook (I used 4mm)
• measuring tape
• stitch markers
• scissors
• tapestry needle
• elastics (optional)

@MGOTHOOKED
Measurements needed:

A. Under armpit to desired length: ________

Measure from under your armpit down to your desired length of
the top, including the bottom ribbing. You may make this a full
length or a cropped top.
Measurement F
Also take note of how thick you want the bottom ribbing to be.
Measurement B
B. Bust Circumference: __________
Measure the largest part of your chest. Divide this by 2.
Measurement A
Example: original measurement 38” / 2 = 19” (final Measurement B)
Yours: original measurement : ____ / 2 = ___ (final Measurement B)

C. Strap width: _______

Decide how thick you want the strap to be.

D. Under armpit width: _______

Measurement E
Measure the width under your armpit. This will be the bottom width of
your armhole later on. The wider you go, the looser the armhole will
be.
Measurement D
E. Armhole depth = ________

Measure from the top of your shoulder until under your armpit.

F. Sleeve length (optional) = ________

Measure from the top of your shoulder down to your desired sleeve length.
Decide how thick you want the bottom ribbing to be.

Example: Mine: sleeve length: 4.5” - ribbing: 1” = 3.5” Measurement F.1

Yours: sleeve length: _________ - ribbing: ______ = _______ Measurement F.1

For reference, here are the measurements used in this pattern, after solving the computations needed:

A. under armpit to desired length = 11” D. under armpit width = 3”

B. bust circumference = 19” E. armhole depth= 8”
C. strap width = 2” F. sleeve length= 4.5”

@MGOTHOOKED
Design and Structure
Before starting, kindly read through this first to have an overview or better understanding of Monica’s structure.

The top is worked sideways, in a continuous manner.

There is no specific front or back side for this top. It
will depend on your preference when wearing it.

We’ll be starting from the side with no strap/sleeves,

and will continue working sides while adding increases
on the top part, to achieve the slanted look. worked sideways

first row
Then we will work on the straps, and to the sides,
which lies under our armpit. After that, we will
continue working on the other side and make decreases
on the upper part until we reach our first row.

After closing the panel and connecting the straps with any stitch you prefer, you may or may not add a sleeve.

To have a more polished look, we’ll add edging stitches on the upper part of the top. For a more secured feels,
adding elastics is also an option.

With this construction method, we have a lesser need to fasten off and less ends to weave in!

Also, I think it is worth mentioning that my turning CHs for the HDCs in this pattern isn’t consistent. In rows
where we are working on the panel with increases and decreases, I used 2 turning CHs to avoid the rows from
curving, while on the Strap and Under the armpit rows where we won’t make increases and decreases, I used
just 1 turning CH. Feel free to use a number of turning CHs your prefer. :)

For easier reference as you progress, take note of the number of rows you made for each part.

@MGOTHOOKED
Part 1: First panel
● Make a number of CHs equal to Measurement A (under armpit to desired length) + 1 turning CH.
● Measure your desired thickness for the bottom ribbing and mark that ST.
● HDC on the second CH from the hook until before the marked ST.
● SC on the marked ST until the end. Always mark the start of the ribbing for easier reference as you work.
● You may use FHDC-FSC here, if you prefer that.

Measurement A

SC

Let’s compute these first!

Divide your Measurement D (under armpit width) into 2.

Example: Mine: initial width: 4” / 2 = 2” (Measurement D.1)
Yours: initial width: ____ / 2 = ___ (Measurement D.1)\
Then…
Measurement B (bust circumference) - Measurement C (strap width) - Measurement D.1 = ___
Example: Mine: Measurement B - Measurement C - Measurement D.1 = Measurement B.1
19” - 2” - 2” = 15” (Measurement B.1)

Yours: Measurement B - Measurement C - Measurement D.1 = Measurement B.1

@MGOTHOOKED
Part 3: Sleeve
If you want to add a sleeve, continue following the instructions below. But if
you want to keep your top sleeveless, skip this part and go directly to the HDC around (1st row)

next page. HDC BLO (succeeding rows)

● Insert yarn in any ST in the armhole area.

● HDC in every ST until you reach the end of the round, SL ST to the
first ST.

● CH 1, turn, HDC BLO around, SL ST to the first ST of the row. ->

Repeat this until you reach Measurement F.1. Take note that the
length has a tendency to slightly shrink when worn because of the
nature of the ST used.

Ribbing
Continue working from the last ST.
● Make a number of CHs equal to your SC in the 1st ST,
SC BLO across
desired sleeves ribbing width + 1 turning
CH.
● SC into the 2nd CH from the hook and
across.
● SL ST into the next 2 STs o the sleeve.
SL STs SL STs
● * Turn, skip the 2 SL STs, SC BLO into
the next ST and across until you have 1
SC BLO across
ST left.
● In the last ST, SC into both loops.
● CH 1, turn, SC in the first ST, SC BLO SC in the
last ST
across. turn, skip the
2 SL STs
● SL ST into the next 2 STs in the sleeve.*
● Repeat the instructions inside * *
around. close with your
preferred ST
● Close the ribbing with your preferred
ST. Fasten off.

@MGOTHOOKED
Part 4: Edging

Armhole
SC around
If you prefer a sleeveless version, let’s now move to the edging.

● Insert your yarn in any of the STs in the armhole.

● Make 1 SC in every ST and row post around, SL ST to the first ST of
the round.
● Fasten off
● Weave in the ends.

Upper Part
Try on your top. For those who have a big bust, there is a high
probability that the upper part of the top is a bit loose on you. We
will fix this using the edging.

● Insert yarn in any of the STs in the upper part.

● If your top is a bit loose on you, make 1 SC in every row
post around.
● If your top already fits perfectly, make 1 SC - 2 SC
alternately in every row post around.

I personally made one more row of SCs for a more

polished look, but this is optional.

If you want a more secured feel, you may also add

elastics in this part.

● Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Congratulations!
You are now done with your Monica Asymmetrical Top!
