LETTER TO THE READERS

My name is Denise B. Abarabar, a senior high school student at Young Achievers’ School of

Caloocan, Inc. This portfolio contains my academic progress after working on work immersion.

It includes the time I spent at Bagumbong High School, my experience as a teacher, and my

involvement in a program.

This portfolio is one of the requirements for graduation. As a senior high school student, I need

to undergo work immersion related to my chosen career in the future so that I will be

acknowledged for what it is like to be a teacher.

At Bagumbong High School, I had the opportunity to engage with students from diverse

backgrounds and personalities. Through this experience, I learned that patience is important

when pursuing education.

Beyond the classroom, I also participated in a symposium aimed at spreading information about

the effects of drugs and their prevention. My journey during the work immersion was

challenging. However, I managed to overcome the obstacles and gained a deeper understanding

of the responsibilities associated with the teaching profession. Thank you for taking the time to

read my Portfolio.

I hope it gives you a glimpse into the world of teaching and inspires you to pursue your passions.

DENISE B. ABARABAR

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to undergo work immersion at

Bagumbong High School. I would like to thank Mr. Mark Atanacio and Mrs. Joy S. Sto Tomas

for their guidance and for letting me experience what it is like being a teacher. They played a

significant role in my immersion experiences; without them, I would not have had the

opportunity to participate in symposiums and interact with the students. Thanks to their support,

I have gained valuable knowledge that I can apply in my future pursuits.

I am also grateful to God for giving me strength to continue every day. Thank you for guiding

me and helping me overcome all the problems that I have encountered inside the school.

Besides, I am thankful for my students for participating well in my class and for being obedient.

Without them, my experience as a teacher would be incomplete. Additionally, I appreciate the

different ideas and backgrounds my students bring to class. It makes learning more interesting

and helps us all understand each other better.

Finally, I would like to thank my family and friends for their support and encouragement

throughout this journey. Their belief in my abilities has been my motivation. Without them I am

deeply grateful for their love and support.

Introduction

According to DepEd (2017) Work Immersion refers to the subject of the Senior High

School Curriculum, which involves hands-on experience or work simulation in which learners

can apply their competencies and acquired knowledge relevant to their track. One of the goals of

the K to 12 Basic Education Program is to develop in learners the competencies, work ethic, and

values relevant to pursuing further education and/or joining the world of work. This subject will

provide learners an opportunity to become familiar with the workplace, for employment

simulation; and to apply their competencies in areas of specialization/applied subjects in

authentic work environments.

Work immersion has been a great help for a student like me to engage with a new

environment and people. Having this kind of opportunity is important because it helps me gain

knowledge about the teaching profession. It allows me to experience being inside the school and

to interact with the students in the classroom. This subject gives students an opportunity to

change their paths if they are not truly interested and not enjoying what they initially thought

they would.

Objectives of the Work Immersion

1. Engaging in experiential learning opportunities is my primary goal during work

immersion.

2. Exploring various career paths is an exciting aspect of my work immersion experience.

3. Developing my skills further through practical experience.

4. Experiencing personal growth and development.

6
5. Applying theoretical knowledge to real-world situations is a crucial aspect of work

immersion for me.

6. Overall, my aim for work immersion is to prepare myself for future career opportunities.

Duration and Place of Work Immersion

I underwent work immersion at Bagumbong High School for a duration of 80 hours. My typical

day began at 8:00 am and ended at 5:00 pm. During my time at Bagumbong High School, I spent

eight hours each day assisting teachers and interacting with students. This included tasks such as

checking assignments and helping students with their work.

History

Bagumbong Barangay High School was established on 15 June 1967 by the request of

former principal of Bagumbong Elementary School, Mr. Luis Reodique with the help of the PTA

headed by their president, Mr. Marcelo Ramos, submitted to then Mayor Macario Asistio, Sr.

The request was made due to the barangay's educational problem. Most of the residents of their

barangay are only elementary graduates because they find it very difficult to send their children

8
to Novaliches High School (which is the nearest high school in their area) to pursue their

secondary education.

BBHS then, was first opened for the school year 1967-1968. The first batch of First Year

students were only 27 young boys and girls. Their first teachers were Mr. Roberto Bustos, Mrs.

Lolita Aspe, Mrs. Felicidad delos Reyes, Mrs. Heidi Quiambao, Mr. Lino Ramos, & Ms.

Adelaida Clamor.

The following school year, the school admitted students for the Second-Year level until 2

years later, the First Commencement Exercises were held at the grounds of Bagumbong

Elementary School together with the elementary students.

In 1985, BBHS was turned into an independent high school and became Bagumbong

High School, which was the present name of the school.

Mrs. Adelaida Gagarra, then Officer-in-Charge of the school, with the help of her

brother, then Councilor Leonardo Clamor, found a larger land space for the school, which was in

Rainbow Village 5 Subdivision, Bagumbong, Caloocan City (the present location of the school).

On 1 June 1988, the construction of the school's new location was started. The following

year, Mrs. Gagarra, together with the students and teachers, transferred to the new school site.

Many changes and improvements were made in the following years. Today, the school

has 8 classroom buildings, a covered court with bleachers, a small garden & park, and complete

facilities.

9

of positive change, development of globally competitive, multi-talented and action-oriented,

environmentally caring individuals.

A channel of quality, highly technical, and value-principled education for all.

Organizational Structure

I was assigned or employed to the Araling Panlipunan Department and to the Guidance

The Training Experience

Journal

January 8, 2024 (Day 1)

Today, January 8, 2024, at 8:00 a.m., we are here at Bagumbong High School. Me and T-

Jay Vargas are assigned to the Araling Panlipunan Department. We met the head and the

teachers. It might sound crazy, but our first task is to buy some kikiam for teachers outside of

school. Time goes by, and the teachers do not give us any work to do. Until I said that we can do

the thing that we will do tomorrow, which is clean their museum, according to them, we cannot

clean their museum because we are wearing our school uniform, but for us (T-Jay), it is okay for

us to clean rather than to do nothing. Cleaning the museum was the only task that was given to

us. We leave the school at exactly 5:00 p.m. I am hoping that the teachers will allow me to

expose myself, meaning that I want to see how the students behave in a classroom and

experience being in a student’s classroom.

January 9, 2024 (Day 2)

Today, January 9, 2024, I entered our department at 8:00 am. Me and T-jay are bored

because the teachers and the head of the AP Department did not give us any tasks or work to do.

That is why we helped Trisha Edisan, Jasmine Fernandez, and Maica Dormetorio. Their

department is near to our department; we helped them cut some papers that are needed for the

Math Activity, which is NUMBO, and we also marked the back of the papers indicating that the

NUMBO paper is already bought. After that, Mr. Bermis (AP Teacher) asked us to mark the

envelopes or portfolios of his students. As I cleaned my things before, we ate our lunch, Mrs.

Geraldez asked me to watch her student while taking a special exam. As time went by, Mrs.

Batongbacal asked us to watch her students because she had a headache. After 15 minutes, we

left 8 - Jasmin because Mrs. Batongbacal came. After that, the teachers didn't give us any tasks.

Tomorrow, I am still hoping for a better job and more tasks to do.

January 10, 2024 (Day 3)

Today, January 10, 2024, I entered our department exactly at 7:55 am. Mr. Mark asked

for us to highlight some important details of the announcement because today, they are having

symposium about Illegal Drugs. He also asked us to come to the computer laboratory to help

prepare the materials needed for the symposium. When we were done, Mr. Mark also asked us to

14
look after 10 - Faustina and Francis and tell his student to answer Module 8. The first section that

we handled were the St. Francis. The students are behaving, though there are 3 to 5 students that

are noisy. Next is the St. Faustin, the students have different behaviors; some are noisy, some

behave, and some do not care with our presence. I always checked them if they were finished

doing their task; I’m glad that they are listening and not that rude, the same goes for St. Francis.

After that, we had our lunch. After we ate, T-Jay and I watched the symposium. It was a nice

experience. After that, we took pictures together with the teachers and the President and the Vice

President of the Grade 9 students.

January 11, 2024 (Day 4)

Today, January 11, 2024, Mr. Mark said that T-Jay and I should go to the computer

laboratory. I enter the Computer Lab at exactly 7:43 a.m. The first thing that we do is type the

information of the teachers in the AP Department, such as their liabilities, name, address, address

of school, their position, the amount of money that they have spent, etc. After that, we had our

lunch. When we got back to the Computer Lab, Mr. Mark said that we would be transferred to

the Guidance Office, when we got to the Guidance Office, Mrs. Joy gave us a task, which is to

list the complaints of the students, school, etc. We must read the statement so that we can

identify which is the respondent and the complainant, and the rules that they’ve violated.

16
January 12, 2024 (Day 5)

I entered the guidance office exactly at 7: 49 a.m. The teachers told us that Mrs. Dela Vega is

absent, and we should watch 10-St Agnes and St. Elizabeth. Before I go to St. Elizabeth, T-Jay

and I cut some papers like their gate pass. At 8:00 a.m., Mrs. Esteban escorted me to section

Elizabeth. Mrs. Dela Vega sent her students the things that they need to do. I don’t know if St.

Elizabeth is a behave section or if I look too intimidating and strict. I am glad because they are

not noisy, which means no stress. After that, I got back to the office and continued cutting slips

with T-Jay. At 10:40, T-Jay and I go to St. Agnes. Like what I’ve said in St. Elizabeth, St. Agnes

is also a behave section, and they are all doing their task. After two sections, we had our lunch.

After that, Mrs. Sto Tomas asked me and T-Jay to watch over 8-Jasmin, she gave us visuals that

her students will going to write. I only made the students write what is on the visuals. After 3

sections, we have nothing to do, but I’m happy because Mrs. Joy asked me to look over the

Grade 9 student while he’s reading; I’m correcting him or teaching him how to pronounce the

word correctly. After that wonderful day, I’m finally going home.

January 15, 2024 (Day 6)

Today, January 15, 2024, Mrs. Dela Vega asks us to go to all the Grade 10 levels to

check if they have proper haircuts, hair color, uniforms, and if they are using too much make up.

They are going to list their name and their section. We only went to 11 out of 22 sections today.

At 11:40, we stopped checking because it was already time for them to go home. After that, we

had our lunch with the AP Department; it was Mrs. Dela Vega's birthday. After we ate, they

kindly asked us to get the cake at Goldilocks in Vicas. After that, we have nothing to do until

5:00 p.m.

January 16, 2024 (Day 7)

Today, January 16, 2024, we continued to check all the Grade 10 Levels haircuts, hair colors,

uniforms, and make up. After that, we had our lunch. Mrs. Joy asked us to look after the 8-

Orchid; she gave us a visual that the students would write. Section Orchid has nice students. I

made them clean their room because there is a lot of trash in it. The next room that we go to is

the 8-Dahlia. They also have nice students; I don't have a problem with them since they are

intimidated by me, and they are not making any noise that will make me mad or what. The last

room that we handle is the 8-Dama de Noche; they are done with the 8-9 visual, which is why I

made an activity. I made them read what is on the visual, then I asked someone about what they

had read. I've had a lot of fun. Dama de Noche is one of my favorite sections so far, and I wish I

would have another chance to handle their section again. After a long day, we made Mrs. Joy

sign our DTR, and then we left BHS.

January 17, 2024 (Day 8)

Today is January 17, 2024, and as time goes by, I feel like it is hard to say goodbye to this

school. I wish I would have another week to create more bonds with teachers and students here.

Mr. Reyes, our head, asked us to staple all the Grade 7 and 9 AP tests. We staple all the papers

that have a second page, then we divide them all into 11 pieces and staple them again. We

20
finished our tasks quickly, then we had our lunch. Mrs. Batongbacal is absent today, which is

why we are going to look after the sections that she has today. I'm bored; that is why I

accompany Jannah Laurio to the sections that she handles. At 3:40 p.m., we go to the section

Santan; they have nothing to do, but the student insist that they have a report in Mrs.

Batongbacal. I told them that they can practice their reporting. After that, I asked them to bring

out their notes because I'm going to review them. I want to help them get a high score on their

upcoming exam, which is why instead of doing nothing, I made them brainstorm. I forgot to take

a picture with them in their classroom, but it was nice to meet them. The next section is 8-

Waling-waling. They also have nothing to do. I asked them to bring out their notes, but they said

that they do not have notes. I looked at their notebooks, and they're not lying. I let them do what

they wanted, except for making noises. Waling-waling is also one of my favorite sections. Now,

it is hard to say goodbye. At 5:20, we made Mrs. Joy sign our DTR and then leave BHS.

January 18, 2024 (Day 9)

Today is January 18, 2024. Mrs. Serrano is absent, which is why we are going to look

after 10-James. They only answer their Summative test. I'm glad that they're not that rude and

noisy, but some of them have an attitude. We have nothing to do, which is why I decided to

accompany John Michael Sison to the sections that he will go to. After that, we had our lunch.

We still don't have something to do; our teachers did not give us something to do. Until Mrs. Joy

asked me to look after 8-Jasmin. I'm so happy because the students and I are going to watch

basketball. We had a lot of fun. After that, we made Mrs. Joy sign our DTR, then left BHS.

January 19, 2024 (Day 10)

Today is January 19, 2024, the last day, and the moment of truth. I feel sad because it is our last

day here. I wish we could extend the time so that I could have a strong bond with the students.

On my part, we do not have anything that is hard to do. I asked my mother to bring the pansit

and puto to BHS. T-Jay and I gave the food to the AP Department and to the Guidance Office.

We do not have a chance to take a picture with the AP Department teachers because they are all

in class. After we gave the food to the guidance office, Mrs. Esteban said that she's going to

order some pizza to celebrate my birthday and Ms. Chavez's birthday. They almost forgot that

this was our last day. After we ate, we helped Daren Albarida to count the test papers and staple

them. After that, Mr. Jandoquile had a headache, which is why he asked us to look after his

sections. 9- Lakandula has nice students, though some of them are plastic and have an attitude, I

did not let them cheat; I kept my eyes on them even though I knew they were all bashing me on

their minds. LOL. The second section, Lopez Jaena, is also one of my favorites; there are so

many absentees today in their section. They are not that bad; they have a nice attitude. The last

section that we handle is the Dagohoy. They have already taken the test; that is why we do not

have anything to do. I only watched them do whatever they wanted, aside from making noises. I

hate noise. This section also has nice students; I also love them. We all took a picture. It was

already 5:30 when we made Mr. Jandoquile sign our DTR. I'm going to miss this school so

much!

Observation and Insights

On our first three days in the Araling Panlipunan Department, I felt like we were mere ghosts to

them because they didn't assign us any tasks. In our department, T-Jay and I didn't have a

specific teacher; we were merely waiting for the AP teachers to give us something to do. During

those initial days, it felt as though we were invisible. However, I am thankful for Mr. Atanacio's

proactive approach; he consistently provided us with tasks and ensured our well-being by

checking in on us regularly.

Upon our transfer to the Guidance Office, I felt a sense of relief and excitement. Mrs. Joy took

the initiative to assign us tasks that not only enhanced our skills but also provided valuable

insights into the teaching profession. She encouraged us to interact with students and participate

in various activities typically undertaken by teachers. Despite this positive shift, the lack of a

specific schedule left me feeling uncertain about what each day would entail.

Nonetheless, my time at Bagumbong High School provided valuable experiences, including

participation in a symposium, and engaging with students. These experiences reaffirmed my

passion for pursuing a career in education and filled me with excitement for the future. While my

overall experience was neither bad nor exceptional, I appreciated the opportunity to learn from

different teachers and environments.

25
Moving forward, I hope that the Araling Panlipunan Department improves its support for

working immersion students to prevent them from feeling neglected. Despite its shortcomings,

my two weeks at BHS were enriching, and I am grateful for the lessons learned and the

experiences gained.

Overall Reflection and Self-Appraisal

My experience at Bagumbong High School was not that bad; in fact, I enjoyed my two

weeks there because I had the opportunity to engage in activities that I hadn't experienced before.

I recall when Mrs. Joy emphasized the importance of having a plan for us. According to her, if

we intend to pursue a career, what should our next step be? This made me realize that choosing a

career should not be influenced by the preferences of friends, family, or others. Rather, it should

align with our own interests because we must consider our next steps upon choosing that career.

Teaching is challenging, but for me, if you genuinely love your job, you will find joy in it every

day, even amidst noisy and annoying students. There's always a teacher who strives to greet each

day with a smile, regardless of the challenges.

My experience at Bagumbong High School during the working immersion program was a

journey marked by both challenges and rewarding moments. I am grateful to Mr. Atanacio for

affording us the opportunity to engage with students, which provided invaluable insights into the

teaching profession for both T-Jay and me. Additionally, I extend my gratitude to Mrs. Joy for

her enlightening guidance. She shed light on the realities of life, emphasizing the importance of

strategic career choices. Mrs. Joy also facilitated our interactions with students, further enriching

26
our understanding of the teaching profession. As a result of these experiences, I have gained

valuable knowledge and insight into the role of a teacher.

However, there were times during our first days at Bagumbong High School when T-Jay

and I felt like we were being ignored. Teachers didn't give us much attention or tasks, so we felt

a bit lost and disconnected. It was like we were invisible, and not having someone specific to

guide us made things even harder.

Despite these tough times, talking to students was helpful. We got to see what it's like in the

classroom and understand the challenges teachers go through. These experiences helped us learn

a lot about teaching and made us feel more connected to the school. Dealing with these

challenges taught us to keep going, even when things are tough. We learned to adapt and find

ways to grow, even in difficult situations.

My time at Bagumbong High School was a big learning experience for me. I learned a lot

about being strong, flexible, and independent. I saw how tough teaching can be with all the

papers to grade, visuals to make, and students to manage. I have a lot of respect for teachers after

seeing all they do, and I'm proud of myself for handling everything at Bagumbong High School.

This experience taught me how important it is to choose a job you love because it affects your

happiness. It also showed me that being happy in your job is important because if you're not, you

won't feel the happiness. Thanks to this experience, I'm now sure that I want to study education

in college.
