S
(B) Answer in short.

N
1. Write down the names of the different physical media for
transmission of data in a network.

IO
Ans. Ethernet Cable, Twisted Pair Cable, Coaxial Cable and
Fiber Optic Cable
2. Write down the names of the different wireless media for

Ans. AT
transmission of data in a network.
Infrared technology, Bluetooth technology and
Satellite signals
IC
3. What do you mean by Peer-to-Peer architecture?
Ans. There is no server computer and all computers are
connected to each other in peer to peer architecture.
BL

4. What do you mean by Client/Server architecture?

Ans. Client/Server architecture is controlled by a central
server. All the computers that are connected to the
server are known as clients.
PU

5. What is Bandwidth? How is it measured?

Ans. Bandwidth is the amount of data that is transferred in a
fixed time. It is measured in bits per second or bytes
per second.

IO
(D) Answer the following questions.
1. Describe Infrared technology and Bluetooth technology.
What's the difference between them?
Ans.
AT
Infrared Technology: Infrared technology uses short-
range wireless signals to transfer digital data
bi-directionally. This technology used in transfer of data is
the same that is used in television and game remotes. The
IC
disadvantage of using infrared technology is that unlike
Bluetooth or wi-fi technologies, infrared network signals
cannot pass through walls or obstructions and works only
BL

in the direct line of sight.

Bluetooth Technology: The Bluetooth networking links
phones, computers and other devices over short distances.
On an average, Bluetooth connectivity ranges up to 30 ft or
PU

10 metres. Bluetooth connectivity is limited in range as

compared to Wi-Fi. These days a lot of devices including
computer mouse, printer and keyboard are equipped with
Bluetooth technology.
2. How do you access a file from the shared network and
K

copy it to your device?

Ans. Accessing a file from the Shared Drive:
TU

i. Click on the Start menu and go to the Network icon,

the window will appear where you will see the different
computers available on the network.
ii. Click on the shared computer from where you have to
access the data.

Computer-8
iii. To copy the file or folder, right click on it and then
select the copy option.
iv. Now go to the destination on your computer device
where you have to paste the copied file or folder.
v. Right click on the view pane and select the paste
option.

S
The file or folder will be copied from the computer in the
shared network to a preferred destination in your

N
computer.
3. Describe the different types of computer networks.

IO
Ans. There are four basic types of computer networks:
i. Personal Area Network (PAN): This is the starting
stage of computer network. This type of network is

AT
great for a small office or home purposes and provides
communication within a range of 10 metres.
ii. Local Area Network (LAN): Local Area Network or
LAN is widely used in small to medium organisations.
IC
They are very easy to establish and maintain. LAN has
a range of 1 km and can accommodate thousands of
computers in its range.
BL

iii. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): As the name

suggests, Metropolitan Area Network interconnects
computers in a geographic region, which is almost the
size of a metropolitan.
PU

iv. Wide Area Network (WAN): Wide Area Network or

WAN is the largest form of computer network.
Businesses, universities and government entities use
Wide Area Network to transfer and receive data from
K

various locations in the world.

4. Describe the functions of a router and a repeater device.
TU

Ans. Router
The router is a device that directs the data traffic in a network
to the fastest available path between the sender and the
receiver computers. When data is transmitted through a
network, it divides itself into tiny packets. These packets take
different routes within the network to reach the receiver.

Computer-8
When these packets reach the destination, they reassemble
themselves and transform into the original message. It is the
router, which automatically selects the fastest path for the
data packet in a computer network.
Repeater
When data is transmitted over large distances, the signals

S
become weak. Here we use the Repeater device to amplify
signals so that the data signals travel greater distance with

N
the same strength or even more. This communication device
cleans the electronic signals and retransmits them.

IO
5. Describe the functioning of the modem device.
Ans. Modem is a device, which is used to convert analog signals
into digital signals and vice-versa, that is why it is known as
Modulator Demodulator. Information in a computer is

AT
stored in digital form. When this information is transmitted
to a network, the modem converts this digital information
into analog form so that it can be transferred through
IC
cable wires. The receiving computer will also have a
modem, which converts these analog signals into digital
form so that the computer can process that information.
BL

(E) Write down the full form of these abbreviations.

1. DNS Domain Name System
________________________________________________________
2. IETF Internet Engineering Task Force

PU

3. URL Uniform Resource Locator

TU

with each other. Which type of network will be created by these

connections?
Personal Area Network (PAN)
