Cell:

Types and Groups

Learning Objectives
At the end of this session:
1. Distinguish prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
according to their distinguishing features
(STEM_BIO11/12-Ia-c-3);
2. Classify different cell types (of plant/animal
tissues) and specify the functions of each
(STEM_BIO11/12-Ia-c-4).
Questions
1. Do plant and animal cells have the same
structure function? Please support your answer.
2. What is the relation of form (structure) to
function?
Major Cell Types
Eukaryotes vs. Prokaryotes
Eukaryotes vs. Prokaryotes

eukaryotic cells have a

distinct nucleus containing the
cell's genetic material, while
prokaryotic cells don't have a
nucleus and have free-floating
genetic material instead.
Eukaryotes vs. Prokaryotes

All living things can be

divided into three basic
domains:
a) Bacteria,
b) Archaea and
c) Eukarya.
The Prokaryotes
The primarily single-celled
organisms found in the Bacteria
and Archaea domains are known
as prokaryotes.
These organisms are made of
prokaryotic cells — the smallest,
simplest and most ancient cells.
The Prokaryotes
The Eukaryotes
Organisms in the Eukarya domain
are made of the more complex
eukaryotic cells. These organisms,
called eukaryotes, can be
unicellular or multicellular and
include animals, plants, fungi and
protists.
The Eukaryotes
The Eukaryotes
Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes
Hierarchy of Biological
Organization

through many levels of
biological organization

A. Match the figure according to its
name and function

1. Parenchyma cell a. for support

2. Collenchyma cell b. for storage

3. Sclerenchyma cell c. for transport

connective tissue?

A C

B D
D. Identify the tissue which is
represented by the figure below:

1.epithelial tissue
2.Nervous tissue
3.Connective tissue
4.Muscular tissue
What are Tissues?
A group of cells having common
origin, similar structure and performing
a definite function

Different types of tissues have

distinctive architecture best suited for
what they do.
Are plant and animal tissues the
same?

plant tissues are different from

animal tissues in many ways.
What are the plant tissues?
-composed of
undifferentiated cells
that are tightly packed
-maybe rounded, oval
or polygonal
-always living, has
abundant cytoplasm
and prominent nucleus
-vacuoles are small or
sometimes absent
-capable of cell division
What are the animal tissues?
Human Tissues
